It Takes Money To Makes Art

Recently, for a commissioned painting my client paid with cash. He paid the full amount with brand new $100 bills. As I looked at those bills I was attracted by the colors and design and each one has a hologram image. They are the new plastic bills.
This got me thinking,: now a day with debit, credit card, checks, pay pal, and online banking I hardly handle cash any more. I wanted to have some fun with those bills before I deposit in my account. I went to the bank and exchanged for more bills, $5, $10 and $20s and started to play around with them, make them into paper sculpture and took photos of them.
Oh, I felt so rich!

Hello Alfred, You are amazing--who but you would think of this and make it so beautiful, besides? You have "prettier" money than we do--but still... Your ardent fan, Kirsten

You actually have plastic money in Canada now, Alfred? That's a good idea. I know they burn millions of dollars here after it's been in circulation for a while and starts to wear.

Interesting "sculptures". You really do have a wonderful imagination.

Thank you! I prefer the paper bank note because I can do more with them. Our new polymer banknotes were introduced into circulation between 2011 and 2013. somehow they don't feel the same as the paper ones.

Thanks everyone, glad you like the humor in it! A bank manager told me : what I created could not exchange for cash in a hurry when needed. With the money sculpture at least it has some base value and I could actually take it to the bank. lol

Nice work! Your Canadian money is so much prettier than our US money.

Fun work, Alfred! I like our Canadian money because you can see what's in your wallet much more easily because it's color coded...you don't have to take your bills out of your wallet to count them see what you've got like you must have to in the States.

Alfred, will you be creating anything with loonies and toonies next? (Translation: dollar and two dollar coins.)

Great imagination Alfred - I agree with Peggy - love our Canadian money! So easy to pick which bill you want without having to take everything out of wallet to choose

Wonderful, imaginative work, Alfred!

I've always been envious of Canadian bills -- so many pretty colors, when we were stuck with basic green. Not sure I like the idea of plastic bills, though. That would take some getting used to!

Peggy, I have some plan for the loonies and toonies but not for art:
. Last year, returning to Toronto from my trip to China, after cleared customs, I was among few hundred Chinese tourists (many were seniors). They were surprised to find in order to use the luggage carts one needed to insert $2 or credit card into the machine.
Many of those seniors were traveling for the first time to visit family in Toronto and not prepared with Canadian coins. (Credit cards are rarely use or accepted in China). They all came with heavy luggage. I gave away the few loonies I had to help some.
I will be leaving in a few days for China again, this time I packed extra loonies. (It will be my way of welcoming visitors to Canada.)

Good for you, Alfred! It isn't just Chinese tourists who have a hard time with these things... I recently had to use the SkyTrain in Vancouver for the first time in a couple of decades and was confronted by how to pay for my ticket. For the life of me I couldn't figure out how to use a credit card at the ticket booth...they had cleverly hidden the appropriate slot and I felt like a monkey trying to slide it in every which way. Finally I gave up and paid with a $20 bill. The ticket was around $8 and I got my change in quarters...lots and lots of quarters. My wallet weighs a ton!

Peggy, last year when I arrived in China and couldn't find my friend, who was suppose to meet me there. I tried to use the pay phone to call him however it required a Chinese calling card which I didn't have. luckily I was able to get the help from the cleaning lady.and connect with my friend.
