Hello there,
I asked myself if some of you also use music to get inspired before or while painting, drawing, whatever.
Normally, when I do something at my pc, I use Electro or House to get inspired. But whenever I take my brush or pen I listen to some old folklore vinyls I found in the cellar of my grandparents. For me it is so...breathtaking, calming, wonderful. The brush works alone with it. :)
Two examples:
What do you listen to while painting?
I'm very interested in that, because I think Music is a very good way to share inspiration. :)

Those are really nice, Erik.
I listen to classical music, and Byzantine music and chanting. I stay away from anything current and too emotional. I like to be transported somewhere otherworldly when I am painting, especially on canvas.
The two you posted would be great to work to.

40s on 4, heavy metal like Ozzy, Motley Crue, Megadeth. Classical. Zydeco. Opera. Tejano. 70s on 7, 60s on 6, Cousin Brucie, Alternative, Jazz. Show tunes. R & B, Electronica. Most everything except hip hop and rap UNLESS its not about stripping your girl down and banging her. The more lively the better.

Depends entirely on my mood (or, sometimes, on the art I'm trying to pull out of my brain). Last night, it was the sublime Adam Lambert -
For the past few hours, it's audiobooks and radio dramas from Arthur C. Clarke -
For a few nights last week, it was all about The Four Tops! :-)

Wow, that Adam Lambert thing is very powerful. What did you do with it? :)
And listening to audiobooks is a great thing. Never thought about that. I will really try that next time. :)

Glad you enjoyed it, Erik!
I find Adam's voice transporting -- and always inspiring; such an enormous talent! This track is a particular favorite. The art is not yet completed.
Audiobooks and radio dramatizations are my frequent companions in my 'virtual studio'. Once upon a time I had to buy them, but so many are now available on YouTube -- all genres and eras. It's fantastic! This spooky thriller is scheduled for tonight's playlist. :-)

Opera, classical and good ole' gospel. Abbie, when my boys were teens, my house was the place that all of the neighborhood kids would gather to. When any of them would show up with Marilyn Mason shirts, I would send them home to change before they could visit! That man gave me nightmares!!!LOL I guess you would have been the kid that I sent home.;}

i don't paint, but when i need to concentrate, i listen to death metal usually. turmion kaitlot, rammstein, gothminister,666, gothic mists, nightwish, samael, a number of others. it needs a good amount of base or my mind wanders. when i'm in the zone i work faster. when i check off boxes entering things i need something on in the background as well. trance works pretty well as long its a beat and not a left right speaker thing. i'll listen to swing as well, movie tunes i have different tastes.

Is funny I love music classic rock, blues, jazz, classical, country, bluegrass, rap...all of it ...but while I am working I seldom put on music... cleaning ,cooking all that I listen but not so much doing anything with art. I can put pictures to music in my head...am even inspired by a piece of music but while doing the actual work nope...I like it more quiet. I used to listen and work but songs change what...every three minutes or so, and then some new picture comes along to distract me from whatever I'm doing.

It's classical guitar for me...the rhythms and fingerwork mesh perfectly with the kind of brushstrokes that I need to achieve. It works especially well when I'm painting foliage.

My auditory problem does not include music or maths, only language. But if I want to concentrate I like silence.
I work with no music on.
My eyes concentrate better. Separately, I have begun to day dream streams of images since I began to work with Photoshop. It is like
a quick moving flash of images, all modern, no classical art involved.
Music would only interrupt me.
When I was in my very early 20s I put on a Mozart recording with Otto von Klemperer conducting the 41 symphony. I played that
recording over and over again five times that afternoon. For the next two weeks during work I was hearing whole movements go off in my head.
I would prefer to be a classical composer over being a visual artist. I was not trained in music.
Klemperer may well have been one of the best conductors of all time. He is perhaps the best conductor of Mozart ever. Of note
his son was Warner von Klemperer, Cornell Klink in Stalag 13. The Youtube below shows you how rich and deep his conduct truly
was. No other recordings of Mozart have this depth.
At 16:17 minutes the third movement begins. It is as if you can feel the spin and tumble of a planet below your feet. The name of this
symphony is The Jupiter.

I too prefer to work to silence or my waterfalls in the yard. I sometimes listen to classical or popular upbeat music, but rarely.

LOL Phyllis.. you would have hated me... black clothes, tattoo, earrings and studs everywhere... however, all the studs were fake as were most of the art.... well it was penned on. I, even then, knew that what i did then would affect me the rest of my life, so I didn't actually have permanents. Now I have a permanent tattoo and piercings but yes, you would have sent me straight off lol.

I would have invited you for a beer Isabella. :)
It's very interesting to see to what kind of music you paint or get inspired. It's also interesting to see that the lovers of classical music prefer to paint peaceful animals and nature. :)

I would have loved you, maybe sent you home to change while smiling at your spunk behind your back....I used to get a kick out of how they would try to sneak past me. One boy came to the house and would fold his arms across his shirt thinking that I would not notice. It was pretty cute.
I almost got a tattoo, glad now that I did not because it would now be distorted by the wrinkles!
I think that classical music helps keep things calm and gets the creative juices flowing. I also have many times that I need complete silence. just a period to clear my thoughts.

Normally darker music like post-punk new wave, 80s and 90s alternative and some new artists in that style as well. Now I can listen to awesome old radio plays too, thank you Wendy, I had no idea that these were out there!

I love music but when I am painting I prefer silence...I need to hear my thoughts loud and clear...without distraction...

Bah humbug, Marlene! Lol ( :
I like pumping, thumping - all styles of music - to get me off the ground although I don't always put on music. I like stomping, clogg'n bluegrass especially Alison Krauss, love it when she plays her fiddle and sings those happy fast songs, I can't help but dance around the room! It's our folk music kinda like yours Eric.
Now that fall is here that means December is around the corner, I start thinking about putting on Christmas music! All types, although mostly classic carols, symphonic arrangements with chorals, I also like the tinkling sounds of the Appalachian dulcimer.

I usually paint with a movie on, old ones I have seen many times so I do not look at the screen much. Also music concerts like Woodstock, etc. BUT when I want to get pumpin' nothing is better than the Talking Heads.
