Is What Ello Does The Right Thing?

Dear FAA members,

You can see links on these discussion boards to Ello profiles pictures and all.

If you right click on those images, you can choose to.....save image to......

The first time you have to choose to open the image to Photoshop.

The second time you decide to TAKE SOMEONE ELSE'S image, Photoshop opens to take
the image(s) automatically for you.

I have never been a member on Ello. I can do this totally without an account on Ello.

AT ANY TIME.

Is Ello right to deny all commercial values? Including works you might post on it? Or might
have at one time intended to post on it?

Dave

Hum David do you use any other social media sites?

David Bridburg

Jeffrey,

Yes I use Twitter with the thumbnails from FAA.

I use Flickr which does not allow that easily for people to take an image.

I use Pinterest which if people use my pins brings you back to FAA. Again
the images are small.

I use Google plus and now you have me wondering. I need to test it or get your opinions.

I use FB which again does not allow this ease to copy.

I agree if you really want to take an image you can.

But not everyone takes the time to get a thumbnail image, especially if the right click is not fully
functional.

People have mentioned the screen saver button or something like that. I guess the largest images
I have online, not hard copy prints, would be the Flickr images. I suppose that is my Achilles Heel.

Actually you can d/l images from Facebook.

You also have it set to where I can d/l your full sized images on your Flickr.

David Bridburg

Jeffrey,

Can I change that setting on Flickr?

I just went back to Flickr and saw that.

Dave

Jeffery Johnson

Yes though I can't remember off the top of my head where abouts that setting is located on Flickr.

"Who can access your account's original images?" Top permissions setting choice.

Set as ONLY YOU.

done on flickr.

The FB images are small. Much less of a problem.

Jeffrey,

Thanks.

I had it done as you were posting, but thanks for the heads up.

Jeffrey,

Notice Flickr makes a serious remark in its settings about respecting the value of your work.

Value as in commercial value.

Dave

I see you changed it where I had to work a bit more to save the full size image.

David Bridburg

Jeffrey,

I expect anyone who knows what they are doing to take any image from anywhere.

But making not only easy, but automated? Really?

Ello has to change its policies or we need to know their settings a lot better.

Jeffrey,

I want to join Ello, but this is a deal braker for me.

I expect Ello to change in time.

Can you enter html embedded links into your Ello stream?

I think I saw a few on some of the links to profiles on Ello.

That is interesting as well.

Before I get into some great quotes from Ello's favorite profiles.....This one woman has
some truly incredible work she has gathered to share. She is an architect.

Quotes from some of Ello's favorites......(front page for the not in crowd, being me)

Hmm. So now I've got something else to check in on or suffer some kind of immature, inexplicable, exclusion/social capital anxiety. Seriously guys it was easier when we all just used twitter

Ello is like field of dreams. If you build it they will come.

@jansegers desperately need to learn French! Tell me this is the reason I've Ello'd! :crystal_ball:

So don't upload full size images for people to copy and it won't be a problem. The largest size I upload there is 600 px on the long side at 72 dpi. That's smaller than a screen grab here.

Edward Fielding

I have to chuckle at David's concern that someone might pull one of his images into Photoshop.

April Moen

I agree, Edward. And considering the source, I find it a tad bit ironic as well.

Joseph C Hinson

It's way more ironic than anything Alanis Morrisette ever sang about! Hmm. Alanis Morrisette as the Mona Lisa could work.

April,

Thanks for the advise.

April can you add html embedded links on Ello?

And how are you going to spread the word of your Ello acount? This last question is for everyone here.

I am reconsidering.

And I do like humor. Better yet I like irony. Dont steal what I have legally reworked.

Dave

April Moen

Yes, David, you can add links, and I have not formulated a plan for spreading the word about my Ello account. Too busy to think about it at the moment. The only reason I'm on here right now is because Photoshop takes so darn long to save large format psb files.

April,

It is control alt K to get into the performance tabs in Photoshop.

You can up your RAM and therefor up your speed. The setting is 60% out of the box.

You can set the RAM to between 70 and 80% of what is available.

The other thing that threw me with PS was the choice I had ignored between
PS and PS 64 bit. OS is now generally all 64 bit. I had just assumed PS was PS, but
actually PS is 32 bit. If you go to the PS 64 bit the available RAM goes up in the performance tabs.

I apologize if you know this stuff, just trying to help.

I am working with 10 GB of RAM. My PS 64 bit is extremely fast.

April,

One of Ello's actual problems is they make no money. This means they need to figure out how to form
different things for the users ie groups. Or more specifically artists groups in our case.

Would it be like dating sites of old where the men paid and the women looked for free. The sellers paid a fee and the
buyers looked for free? That really does not work well. And besides Ello competitors would form a
better model months later. Artists can not only make cheap art, but be cheap. Present company
is not included in that last comment.

Dave.....not sharing his shekels.......

Photoshop is an endless sandbox for creativity. A great tool to bring forth originality and vision. You can get lost trying to master it from a technical standpoint or use it to create original work.

How is Ello different than Pinterest?

David Bridburg

Edward,

Pinterest proved itself. I have no clue how they make money, but they got their following.

http://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/ello.co

http://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/facebook.com

http://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/pinterest.com

Ed that is a good question. Pinterest's stats on bounce rate, page views and time on site are more
like Ello's than Facebook's are. That was a very interesting question.

I know a few young women in their 20s that use Pinterest. They are not artists, they wont care
to put up any content on Ello. They are consumers. They actually are super consumers from
the middle class. They have some serious intent to buy. This has nothing to do with Ello. Or Ello's
artists.

I believe Pinterest makes money on affiliate links.

April Moen

Dave, RAM is not the problem; my system has 32 GB of it. I also have a fast quad-core processor, but when you're saving 12 GB files, it's going to take time regardless.

As far as Ello's business model, I haven't a clue how they plan to monetize the site eventually. I'm sure it will happen, but I don't waste my time speculating about what-ifs. If it concerns you so much, don't join. There are plenty of other social media avenues to explore.

David Bridburg

Edward,

One young woman age 20 working behind a counter told me how she loves to use
Pinterest to set up the next season's fashion choices. I can see what you are calling
affiliates spending big bucks to have their clothing lines in front of her or at least available
for her perusing. And that is just the tip of the iceberg.

Dave

David Bridburg

April,

You are right my time is better spent elsewhere.

Affiliate link means when you click on a product, it goes to a store and if they buy, the affiliate makes a commission.
