Just Curious....

SO here I sit, with my leg immobilized, for at least 4 weeks.....broke my ankle yesterday afternoon and instead of running around to get last minute things done before a trip to Ohio, I am going nowhere.
It got me thinking about all the things I can catch up on, but I wasn't behind on anything.....WWYD? ( What would YOU do?)

Ok, I took a look at your galleries. your work is great, I say get some more awesome art out there for the world to enjoy. Just sit and paint, enjoy not having to be anywhere or get anything done :)

I am curious. How did you break your ankle?

Bummer, sorry to hear of this. My first order of business would be to buy a few books to read. Next, go through my DVDs and see what I haven't watched in a long time. In other words, do some really mindless things that I seldom have time for. Third would be what Mike said, start something new on the computer. In my case I would start reviewing my entire catalog of images for everything from possible reworking some new ideas/skills, keywords, etc.

Foremost, don't rush the healing process.

Ouch! Spend at least one day sitting and watching trash on TV. Oh yeah also have a few glasses of wine!

Maybe make it a movie marathon.
Hope your felling well soon

Sorry you broke your ankle, Marlene. Hope it heals up fast. I think I'd do some reading if I was immobilized for a while.

Ha! But in all seriousness, take advantage of it. Nothing to do, nowhere to be, enjoy some moments of peace!

I'm very sorry to hear that, Marlene.

WWYD? I would make an appointment for a bone density test and make sure it doesn't happen again with another bone.

Get well, soon :-)

Ask all your art friends what should I do? Then happily ignore their advice and have a bloody Mary, or three. For the pain, you know.

BTDT when I dropped a motorcycle on my leg and shattered my left ankle in 3 places. I now have a permanent plate and 8 screws. I had to stay in bed for 6 weeks as our only bathroom was next to my bedroom-upstairs. I was on the laptop a LOT, had a tv with DISH and basically vegged the whole time. The good news was that I lost 10 lbs because my eating was limited to what was brought to me except at dinner when I skooched down the steps on my butt (spouse refused to bring dinner up to me).
The bad news was that it happened on what turned out to be my mom's last birthday. She passed away 2 months later suddenly and I was still in a removable cast. But enough about me. LOL

I had a sketch book and pencils and doodled a lot, I played in Photoshop and napped quite often. I feel your pain, literally. Hope they did not put any metal in there-it is HELL in winter.

So sorry to hear this, Marlene! Been there... done that and actually used the time to slow down (no choice) and and give myself permission to do all the things I didn't usually take time for... read, draw, listen to music, watch TV, eat chocolate... soul-satisfying things! Hope you heal quickly.

Ouch! not good, Marlene. Sorry - my son fell down the stairs a while ago while carrying my granddaughter. Fortunately, he was close to the bottom and torqued his body so my granddaughter wouldn't land under him and she was unhurt, but he had to lay there at the bottom of the stairs until my daughter-in-law came home from the store. Broke his ankle and the elbow he landed on when doing his lovely twisty move at the bottom.

Make sure you exercise it when you're able so it doesn't stiffen up on you.

Louise, that sounds like a pain (literally), with screws in your ankle in the middle of winter....

Ann Powell

So sorry Marlene. I have not had this happen but my cousin who is extremely active had a hard time with "bed rest" even though she loves to read. You will have to take pictures of it in various lighting and use it in your industrial photo collage art!

Mary Bedy

Hey, that's a good idea, Ann - Marlene, see what kind of art you can make with the cast (?) Unless they just have you taped up....

Time to dip into the savings and hire a strapping young male to wheel you around town.

Thanks for all of the suggestions...each one hit home on some level. Wish I could do them all bt I'm not allowed to drink, I don't have a walking cast, so I'm on this thing called a crutch scooter....it's pretty cool...you put your bad leg on the seat in a bent position and push off with the good leg, hoping not to run that one over in the process. ( somehow I have the feeling that my toes will be taking a beating)
We were scheduled to go back to Ohio for Honey's mom's 96th birthday...something wonderful to celebrate as well as my family's reunion. My last 8 trips have been about death and dying and this trip was one we really looked forward to....but....alas.
I was on my way to yoga and the building is under construction...someone was parked illegally in front of the building where the customers walk into the front door...I carefully walked around the car....onto uneven pavement, rolled my ankle and bit the dust...literally! I heard the cracks. Then the lady who owned the car came rushing out and asked me to move so she could get into her car.
ya gotta love it. THAT is what is known as chutzpah.
I have been reading up a storm all year, so I think it will be a catch up with movies time for me and a laptop....Sadly, I cannot paint...I am a stand up painter of big proportions....I think I will miss that the most.

Ed! LOL.....best suggestion so far...I'm still working on Honey to dress up in a cute little nursy uniform.

When I broke my ankle I hopped a lot! Sorry you broke your ankle it's not as bad as it seems, will need the pusher! Same with me, I was jogging downhill and did a misstep off the the new pavement six inches down to where the gravel was supposed to be. Worst fall I have ever had, it wasn't about the 1/4" to 1/3" break on my ankle it was twisting the veins and tendons. I wondered if my ankle would ever get back to the normal size and I am happy to report it did.

Bradford Martin

I hope you can still do some Yoga or other exercise. This is a good time to do marketing and networking. Organize and back up your files. Update keywords, descriptions etc. Keep an idea list handy and prepare for when you are healed. Bummer about the no drinking. I was going to suggest having a case of wine delivered. I know I would.

Marlene Burns

Brad,
no yoga for 3-4 months...that's KILLING me! BUT, i thin I know why I did so much before the fall....my balance and leg strength is gonna be very important during the comng months.
Suzanne, thanks for the encouragement....Today, I just want to learn to love the scooter ;)

I think I would take the pain pill, curl up in bed and cry myself to sleep - and hope not to wake up for about six weeks or so. Being immobile, or near enough, would be the 'death' of me. (and I way to old to cry)

Marlene Burns

KAren, that is how I usually paint...problem is that I can't put any weight on the bad ankle....and one legged anytrhing at 66 just isn't smart....

Karen Zuk Rosenblatt

I was thinking of doing it while on your crutch scooter. You can scoot around the canvas. lol. sounds like a song...

Randy Pollard

Sorry to hear about your ankle and I guess you could just sit around on your computer and do some amazing stuff with your images or get into this discussion. I hope you make a speedy recovery.

Nikolyn McDonald

No clever advice, Marlene. But keep up the good spirits and you'll heal in no time . . . well, almost no time.

Dan Richards

I know that has to hurt, but I would still take a break over a dislocation. I dislocated my ankle water skying once, that hurt like heck for almost a month, after a week or two, it only hurt when I tried to walk on it.
I hope you get to feeling better soon!

David Bridburg

Marlene,

Put down an ultra large sized canvas and drive the wheel chair all over it with paint.

Give the proceeds to your favorite charity?

I hope you feel better soon,

Dave

I'm so sorry, Marlene. Just read your account of the accident. Wow, that is unbelievable! The nerve of that woman. I wish I had some suggestions for you, but I like David's suggestion of creating "wheel-chair" art!!

Fran Riley

OH NOoooooo!! So sorry Marlene. Lots of ideas here . You're going to think of lots of ideas for when you're healed up so keep a little notebook handy and write them down. Keep that cell phone handy too and maybe do some of your awesome pHOTography using some indoor items. You'll probably start noticing stuff around the house you never knew was there, lol.

Get better quick and follow dr's orders :-)

Suzanne Powers

Roll over the canvas with your scooter! Lol, David!

With the internet and books you could have a whole new outlook and become a digital artist! I wondered too if I could do my aerobic exercise and I found I could (by hopping around) could still do pushups on the stairs. Breaking your ankle is kind of neat because everyone wants to help you.

When I can't go out shooting I go dumpster diving through my Lightroom catalog. I always find a few hidden gems to bring to life. As well as a ton of crap that should have long ago been deleted.

Roseann Caputo

David - not sure if you're attempting a joke or not, but I don't find your statement to be very funny. Offensive, but not funny.

Roseann Caputo

Marlene - I would say read a book or two. Now's a good time to relax and read. Either that or get a streaming service and binge watch some TV shows.

David takes images and works on them digitally Roseanne, so I will assume he did not mean to offend. He is a digital artist also

Marlene, I have two words for you: bon bons.

But seriously, I'm glad to hear you're maintaining your sense of humor and also giving the scooter a good workout. I'm sure you'll come up with ways to put your enforced time off to good advantage. Do you do meditation at all? If not, since you can't do yoga for awhile, it'd be a great time to learn.

Roseann Caputo

Thank you, Abbie.

Marlene, just read what happened! What a bitch... Sorry but true. Glad it was only your ankle.

Greg Jackson

Sorry to hear about your ankle, Marlene. I've broken my foot, and hobbled around for 6 weeks. Not a lot of fun to say the least. Hope you heal quickly.

Janine Riley

Well, one thing I know Marlene - you will end up using your time dynamically.
I am sorry that you missed out on your visit, and I do hope the pain can be manageable for you.

I know you will just "not have" people feeling bad for you, & will use your time wisely reflecting upon your future endeavors.

All the advice here is helpful of course, but what will this downtime mean for you...

P.S. This is why I fully believe that citizens should be allowed to be armed with Paintball guns. I think it is our civic duty to tag someone in red splotches as a warning to society; Warning : this person - is an idiot.

Oh, Marlene, that's terrible! Praying for a speedy recovery for you. If it were my ankle, my artwork wouldn't really be affected since I can do it on my laptop too, but I think I'd use it as an excuse to veg out anyway, probably to a marathon of some show I've never watched but have heard great things about, and I'd just crochet the days away. Ah, bliss...

Marlene Burns

Good morning, everyone!
I'm looking at my scooter as a possible 3D painting...I may have to rethink renting it and buy it instead. lol

Today I'm looking at cutting up some clothes so I can eventually go out in public...if I get carried away, plan on seeing some fabric collage work from me ;)

janine, I'm gonna fill up a squirt gun with red dye and keep it handy.....

I could never be a digital artist...I know my limitations! I have such great respect for those mastering that medium!

David Bridburg

Master nothing. I have concepts on the drawing board I can not do yet. I am probably on an intermediate level with
Photoshop. I have a series of shapes for several images I need to form, very complex shapes with contrasts, and
I am just slowly putting the workflow concepts into place.

Because I am moving to a much higher level of work, all the work I have posted so far is only becoming perceived by me
as okay. Those collages are not fully formed new aesthetics as done by me. This struggle to get a lot better at my
craft has been going on for a few weeks. I have begun watching Lynda courses on the topics I need to know.

My other wise confident demeanor is in question.

Back to your wheel chair.......buy it.......but get well soon....

Today I started watching the 60's.
I feel 15 again...

Maybe not a lot of fun, but may pay dividends:
1. Reread your camera manual, and experiment with each feature until you're sure how it works.
2. Ditto for your digital editor.
3. Clean up your computer. Make sure you have backups of your image archive, that backups are working properly, make upgrades in ram and disk and monitor if needed. Do a detailed check of errors on your system, and try to clean them up. Make sure your drives for hardware are up to date.
4. Clean up your website(s), review keywords, and do some online marketing/promotion.

I am so sorry to hear about your ankle! I'll never forget the time I was walking with my husband on a sidewalk and thinking about how I should probably give up skating. Then I thought, no, I am so careful when I skate. Right as that thought went through my head my foot somehow caught something and I went smack down on the sidewalk!

Fortunately all I got was a scrape on my head. Have I given up skating? No.

I hope you will be well soon!

Last night I got a chromecast and am enjoying my surfing on the big screen

Today, I'm buying one of Dale Witherow's books for inspiration.

Gregory, I don't have a real camera. ;)
