Paypal Scam!

Hi, all.

I just wanted to pass on a warning to you guys - last night in my mailbox I got an email, supposedly from PayPal, wanting me to update my credit card info. The email started out with "Your card is about to expire" and so on. Now, I use PayPal to pay for one of the channels that stream from the internet to my TV, and I knew that PayPal had just withdrawn the monthly payment for that channel. Plus, the email identified the so-called about-to-expire card with a number I didn't recognize.

So it all seemed pretty fishy, and I googled the message from the email to see if any scams have been connected with it. Sure enough, there have been scam reports about it. So I found some info on the PayPal site about what to do if its customers get an email like that - we're to forward the email using a certain address, and PayPal will look into it.

Well, I got a reply from the REAL PayPal today saying, yep, it was a scam - a phishing scam, and it was a narrow escape. You really can't be too careful these days. Hackers have gotten very good at making their scams look authentic. If you get an email that looks at all fishy to you, check it out! I'm spreading the word to everyone I know. Let's be careful out there! ;)

Scammers pick on paypal all the time....everything from paypal that is legit, will tell you to go to their site on your own and sign in....no links.
It used to be a standard message.

Make it a rule of thumb...if your credit card needs updating, YOU type in the url and go directly.

paypal doesn't send mail for pretty much anything at all. if something happens you'll find out when you log in. if you ever get anything in the mail, as said, always log in to the site. you can also hover over the link in the mail program and you can see that its' not the link for paypal. paypal, comcast, every bank, shipping company posts, etc - are all fake.

i get these all the time - they go directly to my spam box now. ALWAYS check the email it was sent from, it will not be a paypal email. I just forward directly to spoof@paypal.com and they track them.

I too get them all the time, but I do not have a paypal account! My husband, who has an account, receives them all the time.

I use my husband's account because his is secure. He was hacked 4-5 years ago with many fraudulent charges. Paypal worked very closely with him and of course, they wanted to be sure that he wasn't the person trying to scam paypal. It all ended in our favor and they gave us a secure paypal card at no charge. The card is wonderful - each time we want to use paypal, we press the card and it gives us a new secure password. Once we're finished with that session and sign out, that password is no longer valid.

I get messages from my bank when my statement is ready for viewing with a link. I'm pretty sure it's really from my bank, but i NEVER click on that link. I go directly to the site and log in.

I don't click on links in email. It's too iffy.....
