Don't Get It

I sold the original of "Koi" last year and never had a print sale! very strange. I have done many paintings of fish swimming in females hair throughout my 17 years and sold almost every one of them but NEVER a print sale, very strange to me I should say. Why do you think?

In person?

Things I did not expect to read today --

"I have done many paintings of fish swimming in females hair throughout my 17 years..." Thanks for the chuckle.

Hey Leah,

How are you and your family?!

I have no idea, but I love Koi! :-)

I don't think there's any magic answer, Leah. Most of my original paintings have never sold as prints.....

Maybe the person could not afford an original and loved your work so much they would settle for a print. That's just my take on it :)

It's beautiful work, my guess is that people have more of an emotional connection seeing it in person.

Maybe if you found a celebrity that has a huge fan base and do the koi around a popular face, it would sell more. I do see a lot of celebrity portraitures being sold.

Its an entirely different thing to see and artwork in person vs. a little thumbnail.

In a gallery setting you have the piece in its actual size with all of its wonderful brush strokes in front of people in the right mood to view/buy art. Online your images are a few of thousands of little images, most of which don't cost anything to scan and move on.

It takes a real stretch of the imagination to see a little image on screen and then picture it hanging in one's home. That's the challenge of online selling.

Hi Leah, Strange...I don't really know...but keywords jumped into my head. At shows and galleries people go to look at art and see everything...online they mostly search by keywords. I would be curious to know if you asked a buyer of your original work how they thought of the piece. Maybe some significant association you are missing. IDK...just a thought.

How is that funny Joseph? Angel, maybe you are right, maybe it's the seeing it in person that get's more sales. My Dali painting hanging at the museum got someone to buy a print on another site when they saw it in person, so maybe that's it. Too bad though since many can't see them in person

7 million images here. I am guessing that the same question can be asked and never answered for about 3.5 million of them. Well, maybe not that high. At least I hope not. But you get the point.

Anyone that can actually answer that question is so busy painting and filling orders that they don't have time to answer. lol

I think the rules allow us to post an image if it pertains to the discussion. So here goes.

I like the idea of doing famous people, ad of course you do that already. Here is the Dali pic that I think you may be referring to.

So, here is an idea... do one of Mike Savad's avatar, with his permission of course... I'm not going to buy it. But I bet you will get a 100,000 views to your gallery.

This is fantastic by the way! :-)

Koi can be very expensive.

People that can afford some Koi can also afford an original work of art.

That's funny John, I actually have some real koi in our pond, they were given to us thankfully and about 40 other large gold fish, yes that's the painting Floyd of Dali, I think having one Mike around is good enough but that would have been interesting if I did a painting of his avatar lol

I'm glad you Posted this painting because I really love it. The colors are spectacular and the koi are just like the ones I see in ponds. I have three koi ponds and am thinking of putting one in my house. I see this work as a masterpiece. Thanks for this thread.

Thanks Lisa, that is very sweet of you :)

Here is a 12" butterfly Koi that is for sale.

It is $599.00.

I know you can spend a lot more than that on some.

Some people take these fish VERY seriously. You offered them something that relates to their passion and is not something they have probably seen before. Do you ask the buyers if they keep Koi at home?

I sell fairly much just originals, my mark up on the prints is so low I don't lose sleep over it. Interesting that you are experiencing the same thing. FYI love the painting!

I think Koi is one of your best paintings Leah. The shadows of the hair on her face, very striking. Perhaps you haven't sold a print does have something to do with key words, or they can't quit picture it in their living room.
