Forty Portraits In Forty Years

If you have been following photographer Nicholas Nixon's portraits of the four Brown sisters (one of which is his wife) the latest is revealed here, along with the previous 39 portraits:

This is one of the coolest and most moving projects I've ever seen. Enjoy.

I own one of the books (Thirty-three years) and it is wonderful to flip through the pages and compare the different years. Amazing project!

Enthralled indeed. This is for anyone with sisters (I have three) or family or friends or knows someone who knows someone. It is an inspiring look at the human condition.

upon second look, I'm noticing the more subtle aspects of the portrait...It seems to me that the second from the right sister has emerged as the mother figure....more reaching out and hugging, touching on her part and she seems to have aged more than the others..just an observation.....

I agree, very interesting. That's Bebe. She is the photographer's wife.

Photographer's wives have it rough (kidding! ....or am I?)

I looked at it again just now and it's even more inspiring and telling today than yesterday. There are so many stories which each photograph. You wonder if it was specific to the day the shot was taken or if something more troubling was happening. The one thing that I feel is how very lucky and fortunate they are to have had each other this whole time. One of my sisters, for example, passed away when she was 34 and I was 29. A lot of people are not as unfortunate as these four have been. And not only to survive this long, but to also be able to get together as often as they do. My wife comes from a big family and there are certain members we might see every two years or so.

In a few days, for no real reason, i want to start at 2014 and go back.

The sister on the far left interests me greatly. From year to year, she changes drastically, not in looks, mind you, but in her attitude toward the photograph. Most years she is standing somewhat beyond her sister to theimmediate right (our right, her left) but in some years, she will stand out and in one she is standing in front of that sister. There's a year in which she is looking down and the sister on the far right (our right) is looking directly at her. Not sure if it is out of concern or maybe the sister on the left made her ever so slightly mad. It's interesting. I could look at this slide show for hours.
