So Who's Going Out To Photograph The Lunar Eclipse This Week?

We have another Blood Moon this week in the early morning hours of October 8. The cool thing about this one is that it will be happening as the moon is getting lower in the sky here on the east coast. Full eclipse here in Florida starts at 6:27 a.m. which is almost an hour before sunrise so the sky should still be dark enough for decent viewing. I'm heading out to the west coast of Florida to photograph the eclipse over the Gulf of Mexico. Anybody else plan on going out to get some shots of the moon?

It's not looking good in Massachusetts :(. Overcast skies and thunderstorms are predicted for early Weds morning. The last blood moon wasn't visible here due to overcast skies and this one looks to be the same.

I may shoot it from near my house on Merritt Island, Fl viewing over the Indian River. I have some early morning shots I want to do anyway.

Toby, that sucks but you never know. I've had good weather forecasts that ended up disappointing and bad weather that pleasantly surprised me. Bradford, Indian River sounds amazing. I'm heading out to Venice Beach...still at the mercy of the weather (which is supposed to be decent) but that's always a factor.

Mark -

Thanks so much for the info! I'll check the weather on Wed for my area since I live 3 miles off of the gulf coast. If it's suppose to be decent I will be heading to the shore to see if I can get some good shots. :)

It was great here but I haven't slept well the past few nights so I opted not to try and get up that early. It would have been 5 am.

2:30 am here, so I opted for the moonrise instead. :)

I was up all night anticipating the eclipse but it got cloudy just before it occurred. The moonrise, however, was spectacular!

@Allen, I love that image!

What kinds of lenses do you buy for taking these pictures? I have a Nikon rebel t3i and my pictures look like nothing when I aim at the sky.

John, wow!! So glad for your success. That is an awesome image. I stayed up and bragged on my friend's FaceBook post that the moon was full and white, and in just an hour I would see the blood moon. Haha! It clouded over, so I got nothing!! What's weird is that my dog decided to bark incessantly in the direction where the moon was, which was weird, since he rarely ever barks. I'm thinking maybe others went out to look up, too, and he was barking at them... but my street was deserted. Spooky!

Got up at 5:15 here and right as it was to turn orange, clouds came over it. Ugh! Then i saw the end... after it was orange of course and after the clouds had moved away.... so frustrating!

Thanks Patricia. I HATE mornings. Always have, always will. But they said it was going to be clear. I checked to see where the moon would be around that location and figured out where I needed to be to have the lighthouse between me and the moon.

The wind was blowing a steady 20mph and it was cold coming off the lake. I spent 2 1/2 hours there watching it change. When I first got there it was still pretty high in the sky and I started to worry I wasn't going to get the moon and the lighthouse in the shot. It took about 1 1/2 hours to get where it was in this shot.

Sorry it got cloudy where you were. Sounds like clouds were a problem for a lot of people. Even most of Michigan was cloudy. Seems there were very few places where one could get a shot of the moon over a large body of water. Maybe the west coast of Florida.

Have you ever witnessed a total solar eclipse? I remember one from around 1988. It is awesome. One thing that was cool about the blood moon was how many starts suddenly appeared (every time you are near) when it was eclipsed. It darkened the sky enough to show the ones the full moon was hiding. I remember how the birds started chirping during the solar eclipse like it was sunset in the middle of the day.

Randi;

You need to look at your camera again if you think you have a Nikon T3i. The lens would be more important for an eclipse than the body.
