Should You Be On Pinterest?

I just started using pinterest. Pinning my images as well as others from here and elsewhere. Then I came across these two articles and now I am thinking about deleting my pinterest account. What d'ya think?

The only reason I'm on pinterest is because I kept finding my work all over it even when I had the option on FAA unchecked so others couldn't pin my work.......I was finding pin after pin of my work without tags or recognition to myself......being on the internet is a double edged sword.....your vulnerable and exposed to these kinds of things but if your not on the internet than no one knows you exist or at least it's a heck of a lot harder to be "sought out" .....I started to try my best to have my work pinned from my pins which include my name it gives me the the illusion of control.....I know whether I pin them myself or not they will find their way there.......if there's a will there's a way. ......

I've sold two originals to two separate people due to pintrest. I don't have an account with them, but my stuff has been pinned a lot. Both buyers were able to track back to me and then purchase the originals. One was one that had been pinned over 900 times and the other sale was a different original that they found on my website after tracking back to me.

For that reason and for the reason that my work is getting seen by a lot of people I could never reach, I currently don't have an issue with my work being pinned.

I'm not seeing how it could harm me or anyone else for that matter.

Jani I can relate I received one if my licensing deals by being found on Pinterest......so in the end it turned out to be a good choice.......I wasn't so sure about it took the leap and it worked to my advantage........there's pros & cons to everything

Louis, both of those are old articles. Some people went into a panic when Pinterest came out. The concerns turned out to be false. Today Pinterest is a powerful place to be if you're a curator of images and/or a visual artist.

I've landed two major projects as a direct result of my Pinterest boards. Choose your images and who you follow carefully. Make sure your boards and your stream are super high quality. There are some amazing images on Pinterest; pin and enjoy.

i'm only on pinterest because i can't not be. and i should be in control of what the message says at least once. i turned that blasted button off, and they still took things. people like collecting pictures there, but like any house or hoarders, you can't find anything because of the amount of stuff they collected. but you never know where your customers come from and i have fans, so they might as well have their fun.

Thanks I will continue to use Pinterest.

Then perhaps the next question is a next logical one:

Should I add (if I can figure out how to) add a watermark with my name to the image that already has the FAA watermark. I am pinning from my FAA artist website (http://louis-macovsky.artistwebsites.com/)?

you can't add your own watermark on the images here. and to add a mark you would have to upload it from your own computer, which would defeat the link back. if you do add your own mark, they won't print it.

I joined quite awhile ago, but the more I used it, and the more I read about it, the more I came to believe that its a site that just encourages copyright infringement (or at least does absolutely nothing to discourage it.) In good conscience as an artist I couldn't be a part of that, so I deleted my account.

So in summary there's no real way to avoid images being pinned so we may as well control what we can by pinning our own images. Is that right?

If you are interested in finding out who has pinned your works replace my site address on the end with yours:

yep. i stayed off for a whole year. i found hundreds of my images on there. pinned from google, the search on here, sales pages, contest entries, etc. everywhere the code wasn't. so i gave in and at least some of my work has my descriptions and name on it. you lose either way, you might as well have some control over it.

to see who else has your work, i just do a search for my name, and to narrow it, by boards

Im using the Pinterest not for long but Im glad Im there - first i can track my images somehow, second, as Sheena mentioned anyway my stuff from Flickr out there and a lot . So I decided make it tracking with key words and when Im sending there the images from my AW so I can at least get the viewers and hopefully buyers - instead Flickr which just bringing me only exposure. And I dont care if they download the picture as its really small size to deal with. Some time ago I decided to remove the FAA watermark from the images but all my old staff still with watermark.

I just deleted my account there the other day. I didn't participate and I'm not a big fan. I may be shooting myself in the foot, but I have a bad feeling in my gut about Pinterest. I'd rather do the occasional tweet and set up a fan page on Facebook, although I really hate Facebook. Oh, well, maybe I'll rejoin eventually. Have to think about it.

Mary, before joining Pinterest i read a lot of posts regarding this site - from the artists it was mostly negative in regard that people can use the pictures somehow. Now Im there and can say the main point for me to send as many links with my images out here. Cant rely on FAA with search and any help to promote my images at all and with key words our arttworks in the open field can find the real buyers for us. My name with Pinterest on Google search coming with high rankings 5-6 position. And if every image has the way back to my site/ FAA i dont think so its a bad thing. Also I found useful to join for some common different galleries as All Things Fine Art America, Framed Art, Marketing your Art, Fine Art America Pics - so it make a sense - if your pics cant be found in crowded world of Pinterest now there are particular FAA boards which created by the fellow enthusiast artists. Or you can create the board and invite other artists join you. In this case the name FineArtAmerica works for you.
Also I found that hushtags with keywords work perfectly on Pinterest. So many times I saw that my art picked by the particular word.
So my reason get out as much works as I can from here for them to start working. By the way even well known artist Afremov is there and he does know marketing more than well..
i mentioned above that I really dont care if somebody will download a small resolution image - its quiet possible on FAA too. Who wants they will do it. Why than always afraid?
Im showing there also RedBubble and Zazzle stuff like pillows, phones etc - ts like your online shop - think this way!
So my 'shop" is here: PINTEREST Jenny Rainbow
