Hello October

I love the month of October, always have. It's the month where the cooler days begin and the trees start to change color (except here in Hawaii). I don't have a lot of photos of Fall scenes. In fact, I couldn't find any. So I put an orange koi photo up to honor this months discussion. Feel free to add any of your fall images, including harvest and Halloween photos. I love Halloween!

Morning all - btw Darice who won your book???
Raining here today but still warm - day to get a few chores done and maybe some encaustic painting. I bought the kit so should use it. Had a busy day yesterday - went to the charming village of Westport, Ontario - it is so picturesque. Shopped, met a friend, had lunch and went to a Rideau lakes art meeting. Good day in all.

It's Saturday, Farmer's Market day here on Moloka'i. Kimberly and I picked 35 avocados yesterday from our small grove. she sells some of them to her customers at her booth, and I sell the rest, wholesale, to other vendors who put their orders in last week. It's kind of fun picking avocados from their trees, sort of like an Easter egg hunt with a very long bamboo pole with a wire claw on one end. They are very elusive because their color is the same as the leaves. One avocado fell to the ground as I picked it and almost hit our dog Maka. Fortunately it missed. I don't guess many people have experienced this kind of tropical harvest. Every year we get more as our trees (29) get larger, Moloka'i is such a growing place with acid soil and great weather. I can see many farms with wonderful crop everywhere, and no GMO's... just a dream of mine.

Good morning everyone. James you're up early I see. 29 avocado trees.....yum! If we decide to buy a house I want lots of fruit trees. Banana, papaya, avocado, coconut, you get the picture. The fruit tree I'm not interested in is mango, not a fan of that stringy fruit. Plus they grow so big!

Pat, Abbie won it. It cost even more to send to England then to Canada. But it's all well worth it. I have one more book to give away, this one I'm donating to Lahaina Arts Association's silent auction, along with a gift certificate for art lessons. It's a way for me to drum up business while giving to my organization.

Debbie, I loved that video you shared on my fb! I showed it to Charlie, he looked up the website. The HUVrBoard (?) is still in prototype stage. I think when or if it reaches the market, it will be a huge hit! I might even get one :-)

Cynthia, how are things going in your neck of the woods?

Debbie, all of my avocado trees were grown from seed. I have been told by locals here on Moloka'i that it just takes longer for trees to bare fruit if they are not grafted. Also I think their has to be another tree nearby so that when the small flowers bloom they get pollinated by bees. That could be your problem. None of my trees are over 10 years old. Maybe half have not had fruit yet because they are still too young. I sold all that I had this morning to 2 vendors at Farmer's Market and they wanted more next week. Unfortunately the season is over. They were very disappointed because they are so huge and I sell them wholesale for $1. I'll have more next June thru September. Kind of fun being a farmer, especially with fruit trees, very little to do but wait.

Wow! Darice, mango are my favorite fruit. They only bare fruit in the early summer for a couple of months. I love them. I have many different fruit trees, Tahitian limes, Eureka and Meyer lemons, red grapefruit, starfruit, passion fruit vines, one small Samoan coconut tree, and all of my avocado trees. The lime trees do really well here in the acidic volcanic soil. They bare fruit all year, great in salad dressings, on fish, and in my vodka tonics! Have a fruitful weekend everyone.

Deb that is awful about the gang attack! That would make me want to move.

James you have such an idyllic lifestyle! It truly sounds wonderful for you and your wife! Avocados never had much taste for me. Maybe it just me but they always seemed rather bland. I know they are good for you. It is true the older you get your taste buds need stronger spices and seasonings I think. I would love to take the people that came up with GMO's and just feed them nothing but GMO's!

Pat get well soon for your beloved dog!!!

I am getting ready to start another really big painting. Full human body and it will be dramatic and spiritual. This one will take a couple of months I am sure!

Fed Ex did a good job of sending the portrait I just finished and the couple are very happy. I bit my nails and fretted as I know all artists do when they send off their art in the mail! Fed Ex has never let me down. Very reasonable on the charge as well, only $29.00 and some small change, don't remember exact.

I have a new little "wild thing", another female in recovery once again on my bathroom floor. This one is a domestic short hair tabby and only weighs 3 pounds poor little thing. She is fiesty though! Thus the nick name, "Wild Thing!" LOL! She is one years old as determined by the veterinarian looking at her teeth. A true feral cat. She is eating good!

Debbie, sounds like you and Manny are ambulance chasers. The only crime on Moloka'i is the cracks in the sidewalks.

Cynthia, there are good avocados and bad ones. Some are tasteless and others are like butter. Then again I think you are right about your taste buds changing as you get older. I seem to like more and more happy hours as I get older, right Pat?.

Today is going to be a VOG day for Darice and I, winds from the south bringing up volcanic dust. A good day to stay in and watch football.

Dog the bounty hunter - I love him!!!!! I love that show. Crime is everywhere except Molokai I guess - James all the trees you mentioned - you are a real gentleman farmer - wait til the fruit drops off the trees (glad it didn't hit Maka!!!). I think I will move to Molokai.
Cold here today Debbie 98 makes me drool - I am wearing a parka But heh this is Canda eh!
Did 7 little 4x6 inch encaustic paintings yesterday - fun and passed a cold wet October day.
Nice Abbie won your book Darice - always nice when someone you know. She and those puppies who I follow! Wish I had got 2 - double the trouble and vet bills!!!!

I don't have time for Dog the Bounty Hunter. I never liked that guy or his wife. You girls must be desperate!

Naturally we have crime on Moloka'i, mostly drug related and domestic abuse, once in a while a murder, but nothing like Oahu. Every night the Oahu news is filled with stabbings, robberies, murders of various kinds, bank robberies, almost like LA or worse. I'm very glad it's quiet here on Moloka'i. This is a family community, lots of churches, only one bar, almost like Mayberry in the Andy Griffith Show years ago. I liked that show... much better than Dog the Bounty Hunter.

Morning Ms. Desperate here - What I like about Dog is he is so unlikeable - hahaha - such an old bad ass redneck and his wife - whew... people not to grow up to be like - not the kind you wanta marry. I thought I better explain my choice in men. Heh I am married to a tree hugger and that is wonderful IMO - I love the environment and earth as well (along with Anna B) so ....
Planning my thanksgiving dinner - turkey etc. I always find the veggies hard to choose - root vegetables are nice this time of year - suggestions are welcome. Have 8 friends coming for dinner.
Well off to walk banana - hug a few trees, pick up litter (Monday is garbage day - so while we walk we pick up stuff)

James, I'm with you about Andy of Mayberry, which more towns were still like that one! Sounds like where you live that it is! Just makes me more envious once again of where you live and your lifestyle.

Deb, thank God that doesn't go on all the time! I feel safe where I am living now because we have a security guard trained by a Monk Priest for 8 years. This guy truly is like the ninja movies you see. Not making this up. He is also Native American Indian and just a very likeable man unless of course you are a criminal. They had a very serious problem with trespasser's when we first moved in and Chuck has arrested them all. More than 6 to date and that is just the ones I know of. Trained in I have no idea what kind of martial arts by a Monk Priest for 8 years and military on top of that, you don't want to mess around with this guy. I feel like I picked the right place for us to live temporarily just knowing he lives on the grounds!

Temperatures here are the kind that make you happy to be alive and able to go outside! Just beautiful!

Will be releasing "Wild Thing" back into the wild, if you call our apartment complex the wild, this coming Wednesday. Then on to the next one! I have two other neighbors now helping me to feed all the feral cats, ones fixed and released and ones we are going to catch. We took a walk around the complex and realized if you are going to be a feral cat this is as good as any place. There are two spring fed ponds with fish, a running creek and lots of woods. Perfect.

Dog the Bounty Hunter is like watching one of those reality shows. The first time I saw that show I think my jaw just hung open the entire show. Then I got jaded to it and moved on to "Naked and Afraid". LOL! Then I got jaded to that show. I think television producers are trying to dull my senses. Surely! LOL!! LMAO! See what boredom will do to you? So I have finally learned to turn off the television and walk away from it realizing most of it is not worth watching. Now would you believe they announced this on Fox News they have a new show, "Naked and Dating"?!?!?!? Yep. Nope, couldn't stomach that one.

Went up to the lake to picnic with my hubby. Peaceful.

Hope everyone is in good health and have a peaceful day! Hello to everyone!

It's all about ratings Cynthia, I was in the advertising business for 35 years and TV commercials were all about Burk scores which is the same thing as ratings. I like what you said about "jaw dropping" and "dulling our senses". Drawing you into a show is one thing, keeping you there is another.

Caught another rat this morning, second one this week. This happens every year, when the land dries out down our mountain, the deer and other animals like rats and mice come up in search of water and food, then when the rains come they go back down the mountain. I hate rats! Fortunately they are not in the house. I wonder if they had rats in Mayberry?

Darice Machel McGuire

My favorite shows to watch are on PBS and HGTV. For the most part TV bores me especially reality shows. There is plenty enough "drama" in my life.

Pat, Thanksgiving at your house sounds wonderful.

Cynthia, sounds like your security guard is the right man for the job. The feral cats in your complex are living the life of luxury :-). I bet they are living all the food they are now getting.

There is crime here on Maui too. But it's still nothing like Oahu or even Chico. In Chico, close to where I lived, there was a lot of crime going on. Including, riats, stabbings, house break ins, and a lot of gang fights. Here on Maui We have lots of car break ins. Sometimes a car will be stollen, which cracks me up, because where in the world are they going to go with it? There is a lot of car accidents and pedestrian of bikers getting hit here. Plenty of shark bites and ocean related accidents too. Once in awhile there is a merdur or fight. And I'm sure there are lots of other crimes going on. But the area where we live is pretty quite. Which is fine with me.

Yesterday we went to the Maui 92 Fair. It was a typical small town fair with rides, games, food booths and of course exhibits. My main reason for wanting to go was to see the art exhibits. I was greatly disappointed. It was nothing close to Chico's Silver Dollar fair. The six so called "advanced art" ( or something like that) was horrible. All six entries looked like a five year old child did them. The art by the school kids were far superior. But even then there wasn't much there. The photography section was really good. The produce and flowers were great. I wanted to get a good feel for the art section so I can encourage my children students to enter next year. I have more research to do.

Well, here it is Monday again. I have another very full week ahead. So I better get to it. I hope you all have a great day!

Don't know anyone on the Big Island Debbie. The people who live in that area were badly hit by a hurricane a couple of months ago and now this lava flow. Very sad. Its been all over the national news this week.

Yesterday was my wife's birthday. Last night I made her a special dinner: small char broiled lobster with sautéed scallops on the side, steamed baby asparagus with a roasted red pepper aioli, and a nice Chardonnay. She was a very happy camper!

Morning all - lucky wife James - egads I love lobster and shrimp and scallops and anything seafood - maybe cuz I live where it is hard to get but I love it all!
Yes I heard about the lava flow - now that is scary.
Last night it was scary here - the coyotes must have been literally right under our bedroom window screaming and yelling - it was scary - went on for a while. I live very rural - Anna B was on high alert - growing and peering out the window - yikes!!!
Off to bottle wine today - yum!

Good morning to everyone!

James what a wonderful thing to do for your wife's birthday! I love seafood too!

Pat, coyotes are scary. I came across one while Gene and I were at the lake. They have no fear of people and that is the first clue they are not to be taken lightly. I realized this coyote had no fear of man and would attack me so I retreated back to the car. They will attack people, dogs, cats, anything.

Darice and Iris and Deb thanks for the valuable information shared! A lot of new stuff to look at. I will have to make the time, but right now too many other things getting in the way for me.

Pat have a wonderful safe time in NYC!!! I have been there twice in my life so far. It was wonderful! I saw movie stars on the sidewalk, Radio City Music Hall, ate at the best restaurants complete with a piano player with white linen table cloths, really upscale places. I visited the zoo, I saw so many things and had a great time, you will too! My great aunt and her husband lived in Yonkers and took my family to all these places when I was a child. I still remember all the wonderful things experienced there.

Love the sparkling pumpkin Deb!

James are you prepared for the trick or treaters this evening?

Hello to everyone! Everyone!

I am finally getting some justice at my apartment complex. I sent a very lengthy letter to the actual owners of these apartments and was contacted today by telephone. After a very long conversation they are coming to the apartments to see firsthand what is going on here and sit down and have a talk with office Manager, her assistant and head supervisor of maintenance. Wow! So glad to see my letters are getting attention and something is going to be done. I was told over the phone they are going to see what they can do to make me happy. I told them I will never be happy here as long as I look outside my balcony and see cats that are starving in the parking lot. Now because of what I did my neighbors are coming forward and asking for the same telephone number that was left for me today and calling! Wow! Participation is key and it feels good taking on the bullies in the office here. As we ended the conversation I agreed to fax over the two page letter I had received from the office manager threatening me with my lease for stating the obvious, "animal cruelty, disgusting and that they should be ashamed of themselves." Needless to say now the owners are on my side. :) I think the office manager is in for a big surprise very soon!

The bags of candy that my husband bought for the trick or treaters, well, um, uh, I opened one of the bags just to get, you know, just one, I told myself, just one,................. But then, one, turned into two, and then three and then four and I made myself sick over almond joys. In my defense, they were the little miniature ones? That does sound better doesn't it? My husband had to finally take the bag away from me. Sigh............I went to bed with a tummy ache.............

James what you did for your wife's birthday sounds wonderful!

EVeryone have a safe Halloween!

Unfortunately we get no trick or treaters where we live. Besides that, we have a big rain storm approaching the islands today, which is supposed to last through tomorrow. I heard on the news that Hawaii is the 16th best Halloween state in the country. Over on Maui, in Lahaina where Darice lives, is where the biggest Halloween party is. They block Front Street and allow only pedestrian traffic who are all in costume. I think it's more of an adult party thing.

Have a safe Halloween!

Cynthia Sheffield

Yes, James that sounds like a party just for adults. Sounds like fun. Has your bite healed up yet? Hoping the rain headed your way will not bring out more of them!

Thanks Deb! :)

Darice Machel McGuire

Great news Cynthia. Good for you! I hope your tummy is feeling better.

Halloween here in Lahaina is a lot of fun. As James mentioned, they block off all of Front Street. The children's parade starts off at about 4pm lead by the Mayor. Some of these kids and parents are really talented with their creative costumes. Once the kids parade is through the adults take over. Actually, the parade never ends, it just goes from kids to adults. As the night grows darker and later the party really begins. The last two years Charlie has gotten some great shots. I sit on the sidewalk handing out candy to the kids (we don't get trick or treates at our place) and taking photos with my iPhone. I love Halloween!

James Temple

Yep! found 2 more centipedes in the house this morning. You're right Cynthia, they came in before the rain began. Fortunately we got them out of the house. My bite is fine now, it took a few days to stop hurting, thanks for asking.

I love Halloween also Darice. When we lived in San Francisco we had literally hundreds of kids looking for treats at our door. It was a great time.

I'm making braised cabbage and bratwurst with apples for dinner, with iron skillet corn bread on the side. Kind of our Halloween treat!

Deb, I hope you get well soon! :)

James so glad your centipede bite is healing. I am a firm believer in keeping the creepy crawlies outside where they belong! :)

That looks delicious Iris!

We actually had some sleet and a few snow flakes yesterday. That is extremely unusual for Augusta, Georgia. So the Ice Age begins! Florida is looking better and better!! LOL

We had zero trick or treaters and I attribute this to apartment living. Now the battle begins not to gobble up all the candy left to us.

I look forward to Thanksgiving and Christmas. With this unusual cold weather we are experiencing we might just get some snow this year! I made a big pot of chili yesterday.
