Appearance Of Images On Artist Pages

I was Skypeing with a friend who is also on FAA and I noticed that on her artist's page the first three images were overexposed and lacked contrast. I know that she wouldn't post images looking like this. I created a screen shot of what I was seeing and she was astonished and understandably concerned when I sent it to her via email. She then sent back to me a screen shot of what she has on her computer along with the screen shot I sent from mine. We would both like to know what causes this and how to avoid it. Buyers will not only not choose those pictures, but may assume that all work from her is suspect. Her name is Ellen Zaslaw and her work is always excellent. I have attached both screen shots as a point of analysis and comparison.

she saved it in CYMK, she has to save it in RGB and then the color will go back.

Bump

Mike, Thanks for the answer! I'm going to have to change how my email is split by GMail, since your answer appeared in Updates which are separated from the normal Inbox entries unless I click All Mail. I will relay your answer to my friend who was experiencing the problem. It was surprising to both of us, since she didn't know anything was wrong- the images looked OK to her. They just looked weird to me.

I wrote a ticket to Abbie about it and I expect her answer will be close to yours.

Vivian, I'm a newbie to FAA and don't understand, "Bump." Thanks!

Michael, lol, .I didn't understand 'bump' at first here, either. It is just a way to post a Reply, to bring the thread up to the top again, to help out promoting the topic........Cheers.

Michael

I have already responded to this question and yes, I did ask if they were CMYK or ProPhoto colour spaced images :)

Abbie, I must have missed your response, because I would have remembered if you had mentioned CMYK. I just spoke with Ellen and she said her images are always done with Adobe 1998. Would you please resend your response since I'm sure it contains information that will be valuable to me going forward. Thanks!

that's a color space, if you go under image>mode it will show RGB, CMYK etc - make sure its RGB. adobe 1998 is the colorspace, totally different and has more to do with her screen than the file. it comes out if it prints as well.

you can save a jpg as a CMYK but it does funny things, and makes it much larger as well.

Here's the problem. I saw something that I knew my friend would not have left the way I saw it. My guess was that it looked correct to her and this was the case. I saw three overexposed, low contrast images. She did not. If this is a common occurrence, it means that someone may think they know how their image looks online, but could be mistaken.

I'm not an expert on color spaces, but I know that CMYK is quite different from either sRGB or Adobe 1998. I would agree that had she posted the image as CMYK she would have seen something quite unacceptable. What happened was something of the reverse. She saw something that seemed to be good as she viewed it, but was unacceptable when I viewed the same pictures.

I can't come up with any satisfactory explanation as to why she would see a good picture and why I see something quite poor when I go to her site. Any suggestions are most welcome!

I only looked at one of the images - the one titled Port Elizabeth, but the embedded color profile is neither sRGB nor Adobe 1998.

That one has what appears to be a camera color profile embedded in it called "Canon EOS-1DS MKII Generic" - she needs to make sure she's converting all of her images to one of the two accepted color profiles for FAA. Seeing the name of the profile may help her track down how some images have the wrong profile and others apparently have the right one. Something in her work-flow is probably different between those sets of images.

Mark, You NAILED it! I don't know how you figured this out, but based on the time that she was at Port Elizabeth, South Africa, she would have been using an EOS-1DS MKII. The three images that didn't look right were taken on the same time. If she can find all those taken in the appropriate date range, they can probably be converted in bulk in one pass. Many thanks to all who lent a hand!!
