Do You Have Your Own Studio?

I cleared some land this morning to build a 16x24 two-story studio here in the woods where I live. Cut down a few trees
and cleared brush. It will be built before November, I think. I have the builder lined up. The image is roughly what it will look like (studio image placed in actual shot of my land).

Who here has a studio? Is it your own on your property or do you rent it somewhere? How do you set it up? Do you invite visitors? Do you hang your works or is it just for creating? I would love to hear about other studios to get ideas how to make mine up.

I am excited. :)

I'm excited for you, John! Looks like a great little building in a beautiful setting.

I dream of having a studio with a space for my computers, printers, other hardware, another space for matting, framing, and supplies, and a nice gallery space in front -- with plumbing and conveniences, of course.

Until then, I'll soldier on in my 10x10 library/study/guestroom/studio/writing den. It swelters in summer and freezes in winter. I call it my 'single-story garret'. :-)

Keep us posted as you progress (pictures, please); I'd love to see your studio come together!

Congratulations John and I hope you heed Wendy's request to keep us posted on the progress of your studio.

Yes, but my nephew is living in it, lol. Thanks for the idea! Once he moves out, I may just use it as my work place. Then, I'll have somewhere to go every day. I am not a painter, so I don't need space. Maybe I can rent out the upstairs to a painter, hmmmm..... now you've got my wheels turning!

Love your design!

Hi John - Yay! Congrats! I don't have a separate studio, but I have a room in my home that is a separate office/creative space. I just need a tad more space to fit in a drawing table. LOL It would also be nice to have one room with a separate climate control system for storing prints on-site.

This is going to be exciting for you! When we built our house we put hard floors in the bonus room where my studio was to be located, but it was too far away from everyone and too far away from the giant sink that I wash my brushes in. So eventually our garage became my man cave where I can be close to my family and I have very tall ceilings and walls to hold my paintings as they dry. I made my studio real inviting to work in. I have anti stress carpet that I lay down right before I work so that my feet aren't killing me after standing for five hours straight. I love having a space just for painting to keep the mess under control, but I rarely invite others in. My family comes in to check on things, but they never hang out. My pets are always there. Most people ask to see my studio, but I usually don't allow it other than about once per year.

My studio spaces have been fleeting experiences. My hope is to be able to have a stable long term actual physical space. It looks like the cabinish studio here will be a great space to practice art for you

Wow John, that is going to be so nice! I've always "lived" in my studio so I am jealous! I would even love Wendy's little room :0 I can picture what I would want ...one thing comes to mind...a whole wall of shelving behind perhaps bi-fold doors. Every studio I have been in is so unique to the individual, I imagine yours will evolve that way too. Congratulations!

Hi John, I think your studio will be wonderful. I have a studio in my home now. It is upstairs. For over 30 years I had a building near the Galleria in Houston where I did art and photography.
I was
the photographer for several neighborhood newspapers and did commercial art as well a fine art for sale. When I had my last heart attack I sold my building and moved my studio to my home. It is very comfortable for me to have it here. I have lived 14 years since my last heart attack and painting many pictures. I don't sell photographs now but still enjoy taking them.
I plan to have a show of my art in a gallery in the fall and I don't show my paintings at my home but online with Fine Art America. Good luck with your studio and wishing you much success with your art. Fred Jinkins - Happy Old Artist

Yep.

When we bought our retirement house in Cheticamp, N.S, the rear of the garage was partitioned for the storage of lobster traps.
I knew immediately was I was going to do with it. Once we moved in, had our reno guy finish the inside, put in a new floor, a heater and in goes my flash system and backdrops.

Now serves as my portrait studio, and a great service to the local community....

Cheers everyone!

What you are doing is my dream! I live in the middle of the woods and I want a studio way back off of the beaten trail. Totally secluded! Right now, I am in my spare bedroom with not much space at all. The only bonus to having your studio in your home is you can cook and wash the laundry while you are painting...If the phone and my husband would just leave me alone!

This is an interior view of one of my past studios. It was about 30x50 feet and over two stories high. From the outside, it looked like a barn. The picture was taken from a loft above the office and lab. There have been many times I wished I still had it.

The space was rented and I met with clients there. The walls near the office were hung with prints of my images. The place was large enough that I could easily shoot cars inside.

That will be a nice studio John. This is my humble painting studio. When the house was being built we requested this flooring so that I could easily clean up any dropped paint. Whenever I dream of building a larger studio I try to remember this quote. “An artist's studio should be a small space because small rooms discipline the mind and large ones distract it”. –Leonardo da Vinci
My individual workshops don't require a large space but if I have multiple students we have class in my two car garage.

Thank you all for the kind replies. It is wonderful to read your experiences and I am grateful for your kind words. I will post images after the real deal is built.

My studio was a necessity because my wife is fed up with my inventory taking over the house and me taking over the breakfast area to paint. It was HER idea to build the studio. No wonder I have been married to her for 40 years! :D

@John -- She's a keeper, John! She didn't demand that you stop, just that you relocate -- that's awesome! Please give her my regards. :-)

@Stacy -- Leonardo never had to make space for big monitors and printers! Though, come to think of it, I'm sure he would have enjoyed that!

John, yes I have a studio in my home. I have had a studio in my homes in Philly, San Diego, New Jersey, and here in KC. The person who built this home is an artist so I inherited a very nice studio space. My bonus is that I turned a storage area into a full fledged gallery and office, where I work.

One thing I did in my gallery was install 4x8 sections of plastic lattice. They are screwed on strips that keep them outset slightly from the walls. This way I use S hooks to hang my work. You can just move the hooks up, down, left, right and never put another hole in the wall. My builder was scratching his head when he installed them but once he saw how it would work, he got it.

Congratulations on such a nice space. Now go create something.
