Photo And Painting Art Of Dramatic Stormy Weather

Most people, including myself, tend to try to make images with the most pleasant of light. Golden hour, dawn, little puffy clouds in blue sky, etc. But, sometimes the drama of a storm can make yet another lovely landscape take on a whole new dimension.

Recently, I was motorcycle camping in the Badlands National Park, and had explored as much of the park as I could in one day. It was a nice sunny day and I got several keepers out of it. The next day, a massive storm was rolling through and I had to skeedaddle. I could have taking a quick highway out, but I backtracked and had hail, lightning, violent wind, rain, etc. nipping at my back as I tried to get out of the park before the worst hit.

Also, ended up riding through a wicked Nebraska storm and missed the tiny window I had to get to shelter, because I saw this amazing old car in front of a farm house that just begged to be captured. Was it worth it? Still asking myself that question.

Let's see your best stormy weather images!

And...just because I'm a rebel... I include this sculpture.. Not sure whether this term is used in America too, but "Squally" refers to really rough weather which occurs in small patches and can pass in minutes.

Squally.
195 million years worth of stormy seas pounding away at primitive lifeforms created this stone...
And now a (slightly less) primitive lifeform pounding away at this stone created these stormy seas..

What a beautiful fractal universe we are!

A recent trip to Crater Lake, OR. The rains that finally came were very welcome amidst the record drought.

@Loree... sweet! I hear ya on storms being welcome in drought. I live in Texas and camped at a state park about a week ago... that used to be a lake only 4 years ago. Now, it's completely dried up and the lake bed is covered in grass and brush. They're calling it an "equestrian park" now. ;)

Nice work, Skip -- but aren't you lightning bait on that motorcycle? Yikes!

I actually prefer stormy or pre-stormy skies to fluffy sunny-day clouds, but they're hard to find around here -

It's usually drought season here, so I sometimes make my own storms -

Lots of awesome stuff!

About a week ago, I was coming back to Austin, Texas from El Paso, Texas. It's a long haul on a motorcycle, so I was looking for somewhere to break up the trip for a night that was about half way with camping.

The direction I decided to go was showing a 0% chance of rain (according to weather.com) and it was only about 30mins longer going that way.

While I was going down the highway and noticed the clouds were getting REALLY ominous. When I was dodging tornados in the central U.S this summer, this farmer told me to watch out for the "shelf" clouds. Don't know if it's true, but he said tornados usually spin off the ends of the "shelf".

So, I'm blasting down the road, taking a short cut and I see a cloud that looks like the shelf cloud the farmer told me about. Watched the cloud for a bit, then noticed it looked very bizarre and stopped to get a quick snap. While I was standing there, I realized it looked awfully close to a tornado forming. Got a very quick snap and hit the throttle. No time for more shots, was distracted by the prospect of looking for shelter and getting away from whatever appeared to be forming. ;)

Here's an instagram image I snapped before high-tailing it:

I love being out in storms. You can't really see it in this photo, but the wind was howling that day.
