Patience Pays Off

I shoot street photography in Asheville, North Carolina and then create art from said photos using a variety of software tools, plug-ins, and custom brushes.

As in most cities across the nation, Asheville has its share of homeless. The expression on the face of this woman matched her dog, creating a poignant scene that can rend a heart. Wrapped in a sleeping bag as the sun sets and a cool night approaches, she rests her head on a duffle bag containing all her worldly possessions, save her dog. The kindness of strangers keep her and her hope alive.

I get a bit frustrated by those who say this is not photography and those who say it is, and therefore is not "traditional" art. I was denied entry into a gallery 4 times because I didn't "fit" and they said it would not sell. I am now on a waiting list for a different local gallery. I have a one-man show in yet another gallery Nov 8 - Jan 3. Postcards of my work are being sold in the Asheville Art Museum. To those who told me a couple months ago to be patient, thanks. This Fall will be busy and fun. The best "revenge" is living well.

Now if things would sell here, too. Guess I need to be patient again, huh?

Wonderful work John. Very moving.

I know you didn't ask but I would add girl and dog to the keywords for more exposure.

Thank you Pamela - I did that!

All wonderful news, John -- except being denied gallery space. Been there and done that -- I was even turned down by a gallery co-op run by an organization I belonged to. They were willing to "tolerate" that my work is digital, but drew the line at it being 'Open Edition'. Go figure!

Enjoy your exciting Fall season; you deserve it! :-)

John, you are a hard worker and an example to us all, congratulations on all your success! I have seen your growth since you were first here, your image with the added work is beautiful and sensitively done, looks as good as any well established artist's work.

Thank you everyone.

I started with nature, landscapes, and animals but found that "everyone" does that. I switched in 2014 to street photography and applied my 20 years of Photoshop experience (I started restoring old photos in 1994) and added numerous plug-ins and over 300 custom brushes I created from my own images. I have never been happier. While I would like to sell, I have found tremendous joy in printing 8x10s of my creations and giving them to the people I shoot (when I can find them again).

I have learned a lot from people here at FAA - so many great artists and so much information imparted freely on this discussion board! I am truly grateful.

I know what you mean about creating with digital media, it is fascinating and creative. I think you have found your medium and developed a great style.

yes patience can be a virtue. If all worldy goods are in a bag used for a pillow and all the warmth gotten is from a pet I would say this young women has been very patient with the world and the question stirs in ones head. Is there a god

Wonderful work. Control all that we can and try to learn to be patient is all that we can do.

It is very good image but it lost its appeal like street photography.
Do you think to change the image name to something like: under bridge?
And her bags look too traveling staff.
