Tranquility Of Mind...how Do You Give Yourself Peace?

Tranquillity is the quality or state of being tranquil; meaning calmness, serenity, and worry-free.
This summer my wife and I attended farmers markets. In addition to all sorts of fresh produce, we are treated to a small group of musicians. I noticed a young girl playing a guitar and singing with her group. The first 4 times I observed her she looked very tired, very sad. But then a strange thing happened. The last time, just this Sunday, as I took pics of the musicians, I saw the tired sad girl....But, No....

She somehow had transformed herself into a person of tranquility. Looking at her, I also felt tranquil. She seemed almost to be in a trance. I took pics of her, a few feet from her face. I wanted to get as close as I could to someone so serene, so at peace with herself. See for yourself...

My question to you is: What gives you peace of mind, how do you become tranquil in this mad mad world we are condemned to live in.

Hiking always works for me, especially through the forest. In Japan it's known as shinrin-yoku, or forest bathing.

As someone experiencing vestibular issues, I'm always trying to find balance - literally. Every movement has the potential to lurch me into a fight or flight moment. I literally don't know where I am in time or space. So, tranquility seems, at times, impossible.

I meditate often and did before this condition challenged me so greatly. But in that moment it's hard to find my center. Even though I intellectually realize that I'm not falling, it takes a moment for my body to know, so I'm constantly using meditation on the fly to lower my heart rate. Just this weekend I thought to apply self hypnosis tools, also. I've begun to use a mental prompt to try to get my heart rate down. I can also see using a word to trigger relaxation on the fly.

The other thing I do to promote tranquility is to shoot Sony (internal image stabilization).

I have no expectations of tranquility -- except for the occasional moment here or there. That way, each of those moments, however fleeting, is a miracle.

The key to tranquility is tranquil thinking.

Letting the Days Go By

Wow, thanks all so much for your replies.
Sigh, for whatever reason, I need prescription drugs to put me at ease. I don't like this but it is what it is.

This morning around 2am I woke with a start. I swear I heard a woman screaming for help. My heart was beating, I even picked up a weapon of choice and searched the house. I should have taken a clue from our 4 dogs all of whom were sound asleep. They would have been barking up a storm.

I approached our Pitbull. She was asleep on a chair in the living room. I told her my problem. She followed me back to my bed and went to sleep next to me. She gave me peace of mind. I am training her as a protection dog (you ought to see her do attack work) but she is also a love bunny and likes to snuggle with the old man, me.

Once again thanks for all your funny and your serious replies. I loved them all.

Vivian, yes!! Every day I tell myself to stay off the forum, and here I am, lol. That is too funny!! What gives me peace are my pets and feeling like a speck in the universe. Actually, I'm even tinier than a speck. That gives me some kind of odd peace for some reason.

Tranquility comes from a happy nervous system. It stems from a certain chemical state. Like all other feelings and emotions it is driven by hormones, and hormones activity is based on how well your organs are working. Tranquility is not a magical thing, and you can't will these things into existence no matter how hard you try. It medically not possible. Alcohol and drugs have been used for years to calm the nervous system, and they do work but at a cost of further worsening the problem. They are negative solutions. The proper thing to do is figure out what is causing the issue in the first place and correct it. Lots of things can cause your nervous system to be on edge. The most common are simply vitamin and mineral deficiencies. I've seen people change in to completely different people by just adding trace minerals to their drinking water.

I've had to study all of this because I have a rare condition, and I've been studying it for over 20 years.

Also Robert is sound like your blood sugar dropped in your sleep and you had a hypoglycemic dream. They are terrifying by nature because they serve to wake you up before you die in your sleep. You should immediately eat something when you wake up like this, and you should go see a doctor and get your blood sugar tested. Eat some protein before bed to help avoid this.

Hypoglycemia would definitely interfere with your ability to achieve tranquility!

Robert, I know a professional cellist and I have seen almost this exact trance like state on her face as she performs. live performance of music just cannot be surpass with recordings. somehow the music locks the musician and the audience into periodic oneness.

Most of what Marlene said:

"listening to binaural beats

believing in something far greater than our mortal selves
stop obsessing on one's own issues and helping someone else. "

for me - letting go of everything - as if in the next breath, everything would be gone - even me.

I loved reading all of these interesting comments in this discussion. I am new here so I learn from these discussions. Tranquility? LC, I relate to what you are talking about and I am an intense personality as well. I use Acupuncture and for one hour I am more tranquil than I ever thought possible. It is almost surreal and when I leave the office, I am calm, well-rested and very peaceful. I also use colored pencils for mandalas. Before I begin, I make a list of names that I want to pray for and then when I start the color process, I clear my mind and focus totally on the color that I am being led to use next. When the circle is all finished, for some reason, I can not throw them away. I just keep them and look at them often and see the names that were lifted and how all the colors came together without me controling them. Those two are my favorite ways to find tranquility with the next one coming in at listening to music that is celtic, spiritual, new age, or for positive thinking. Thanks for allowing me be part of this discussion. Roberta, Child of God
