When In Portland...

I'll be in Portland, Oregon for a week and will have a couple of days free the end of next week. I'm looking for suggestions for places to go to take pictures. I'd prefer out of town/non urban scenes.

Fire away!

Coast is only a couple hours west Mt Hood a couple hours east.

Should be getting some fall color in the gorge as well.

Columbia River Gorge - waterfalls, lush greenery, landscapes, autumn color.

The Gorge will probably be crowded, especially the waterfalls that are essentially road-side but they are still worth going to.

If you want to aim for fewer crowds, Eagle Creek along the Gorge takes you to Punchbowl Falls which is awesome, there's another waterfall farther up on the right for which there is a distant view, then you hit tunnel falls where you walk under an old tunnel blasted through the mountain and past that there is one more.

The gorge trail to all those is spectacular in the fall and I think its probably about 4-6 miles each way to see them all. That can be a full day.

There is another one for which I can't remember the name that may be a little less crowded. Its on the road that goes past Multnomah all the way at the end of it going away from Portland.

Any tourist info will have a map of the more popular ones along the gorge. There is usually a waterfall section in the magazine type things at rest stops around Portland along the Gorge.

I don't remember how far it is from Portland but Silver Falls state park has the Trail of Ten falls. Should be spectacular this time of year. 10 waterfalls on one trail and probably 7 of 10 are spectacular.

All kinds of other stuff in that area too.

Portland zoo and rose gardens. Lots of tree, flowers green space, views of Portland etc.

Multnomah Falls and her surrounding eight (?) waterfalls. Little to no hiking involved.

Thanks for the ideas.

I think I'll be camping in the Mount Hood area for a couple of days with a friend. After that, I'll have a couple of days to myself. I'm thinking of maybe Cape Disappointment and the mouth of the Columbia River...maybe some ship watching...but I can do that here. Seems like there is far too much to see and not enough time.

Was thinking of maybe Crater Lake, but I don't know that I want to take that much time on the road.

Crater Lake is beautiful, and if you were willing to spend some time on the road, I'd also suggest the Oregon Caves in Cave Junction and the lava caves in Bend. But Cape Disappointment and North Head are also good spots, as is Astoria for her Victorian houses on the hillside and the bridge. On your way back from Mt Hood, you could stop at Multnomah Falls. You'll also find great views of the Columbia Gorge at the Crown Point vista.

If you're going to Crater Lake head to it through Roseburg and up the north fork of the Umpqua River.

At Glide there is Colliding Rivers where the Little River and Umpqua meet and there is a beautiful falls on a small creek about 11 miles up Little River just before you get to the Job Corps center up there.

Of course the North Umpqua is in and of itself a beautiful stream lots of falls and spectacular rapids.

Once you get up to Diamond Lake there is Mt Thielsen and Mt Bailey. From there you can just about throw a rock at Crater Lake.

These are great suggestions! Portland is only a few hours away from me, so I'm going to follow this discussion. I can't hit the follow button without posting something, so I am posting.
