The Utility Of Artist Blogs And/or Videos

Hello, I was having a discussion at my local art club meeting in Jefferson City about the use of social media and the internet as marketing tools. The discussion was with mostly veteran artist who started before the innovations we now have access to made the world a much smaller place. Many topics were discussed, but the one central issue was that ALL agreed that a modern artist must use social media to build their brand. There were three retired teachers who have stopped going to art fairs and devote all their energies to online selling devices and models.

Is social media use helping to build your brand?
How do you use social media?
How many monthly visitors hit your blogs or YouTube videos?
Is there a correlation between internet hits and sales?

I look forward to the responses.

Steven

Hi Steven ... I'll be watching this thread.

I've been doing the social media thing for a while, but not sure if I'm mostly preaching to the choir or not. And I haven't been tracking visits between sites ... sounds complicated!! ; ))

Still, I like the idea of getting the stuff out there into the universe. Facebook, personal and business, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google+, About.me, vids on YouTube and Vimeo. I guess pretty much everything except Pinterest (don't like / don't trust Pinterest).

As to blogging, my poor blog has been limping along off and on for a couple of years, but a few months back i really made the commitment to myself to get it in gear and keep up with it, and have been doing so now, every few days. Not a clue if it has made any difference, but one image that I particularly love, which is relatively newish and hadn't sold, I featured in the blog on Sept 6th http://1stangel.co.uk/loisbryan/2014/09/06/one-room-school/ and lo and behold the sucker sold here on FAA, with a lovely mat and frame Sept. 9th. Coincidence? Maybe / probably / maybe ... ???

Hello Lois,

I have found that social media works for artist to artist, but the customer base is more allusive. I like to network and meet other creatives. But I do believe posting images of your work does make a difference on the internet. Regardless of the format; to get your work seen makes the internet one large gallery. The task is to find a connection.

Congrats on the sale. I hope it is the beginning to your FAA success.

Thanks, Steven ... I've been with FAA for a few years now and have been very happy here ... greatest production values in the industry!!!!

Social media goes beyond tweeting about your latest upload. You have the opportunity to show people works in progress, how its made, what inspires you. Some artists here have shared studio tour videos.

Anything to help make a connection with buyers. Too often people see work and have no clue where it came from, they don't connect the artwork with a real person.
