An Ode To The Starving Artist

An inspiration bestowed to me by my dear friend Tony Mallous: A gifted artist driven to share beauty (when without any paints) will find any means possible to accomplish his task...even if it means resorting to cooking crayons and oil upon the stove. Just like the old masters who learned to create pigments to paint the dreams that haunted their souls... the artist driven mad by these unborn ideas found repose upon his canvas with what means he had to dress her with...as with any dream, when theres a will theres a way

Interesting.... I once did a mural using boot polish because it was all I had. It turned out to be one of my better works of art..

Let me paint

When life has taken its toll
And I'm but a shell of a man,
God give me at least one good eye,
And a steady, deliberate hand.

When this body grows weak,
And my very heart is faint,
Give me the power to grasp a brush,
And give me the strength to paint.

When my days on earth are few,
And I have completed all my toils,
Lead me closer to God,
And surround me with my oils.

When I have passed from life,
And perhaps strolling with a saint,
I'll be inspired by streets of gold,
So Lord, please let me paint.

I remember those days ; where I took whatever I had on hand to get the job done.
It may have been House paint, eye liner, lipstick or a butter knife. I was a lot more enthusiastic back then.

I still recall my first painting - being my best.

Use to collect cans in the park for money and paint on bedsheets I purchased at the thrift store.

Boy does this resonate! I work fast, so having enough canvas around gets pretty expensive. I'll paint on anything that's in front of me...furniture, walls, books. I started painting on pieces of cardboard boxes a little while ago. Now, my room looks like a giant bird is trying to build a nest entirely out of packing materials. Sometimes I look at it and think...this is a bit much isn't it, but then the next idea comes and I just grab a piece of trash and get to work. Time will tell if I've lost my mind, but in the meantime, watch your garbage!

I have painted with Olive oil and mixed acrylics and oil. When you want to paint you use what you have.Very few paintings have been made with selling in mind. But sometimes the work is sold so you have to wait and buy what you need.Rembrandt's work looks like it was finished yesterday,Munch's work are falling apart after only 50 years .Sometimes I think:Why do I paint.

When people ask me to paint a work of art,I say:If you pay me now for the oil paint and then you pay the rest when the painting is finished. That always work.

I once painted my walls mud and garbage and left it for my landlord. Long story short that's why I live in orlando now.

Gene: I absolutely love that poem! Who is the author? And to John: I wouldn't wish living in Orlando on anyone! lol. To everyone else that shared: Im ever so happy to see the passion we share as artists has not changed with the passing of the decades; it took me years to pick the paintbrush back up after two semesters studying the history of modern art and what the textbooks and professors label as "art" ;)

I inherited any artistic ability from my father, he would play drawing games he made up as far back as a remember. He was more a sculptor than a painter. He would find objects at a junk yard and make amazing birds and animals using a torch a welder and paint. These sold well at flea markets, so well that I realized after he passed we didn't have one. That and whirly gigs, bee's, ducks, windmills, sold great in the spring. Most cabinet shops, gave him the scrap lumber. He was successful because he worked hard at it. He built bird houses that looked like outhouses, large intricate doll houses, all sold when he was alive. I consider him a successful artist. I'm too lazy I just paint.

I used vegetable oil instead of linseed oil in college ONCE...but ultimately chose to buy art supplies instead of food.

I always wondered if olive oil would work for paintings. I used to make my own paint from all kinds of ingredients. Those paints didn't have much lasting power.

Hi Lisa

It will not dry very fast, the olive oil will change the color. But if it's just a sketch you don't care about, olive oil is great.

I agree Robert...Olive oil takes forever to dry but for the Painter who is never quite satisfied with the painting, this oil makes the colors that much more forgiving (much like a fresh oil paint)

An Artists Prayer

Dear Lord, Thou greatest of artists, I kneel before thee,
- knowing that all good and perfect gifts come from above.
I pray, give Devinne guidance to my hand, give clear vision to my eyes,
and give Godly creativity to my mind and heart.

Grant me at least enough strength to carry my portion of the burden
of those who toil to further the world of art. Let my work be a blessing to others,
and a legacy which will cause remembrance of me after my time on earth.

To Thee, the Master of Masters I pray. Amen

Alexandria,beautiful name.

When you use more then tree colors, one of them will not be as strong. You will kill the color, but if you want the painting to look like that way I guess Its good to work that way. :)

In North America we are far richer than people live in third world countries. if ones has to heart to create, often don't have to go far to find things to make art. I often use found objects to make art. This one is painting with coffee.
