How Do You Create?

When you work on a project - do you work on one at the time? Do you have a vision before you even start? What do you do when you are not happy with the outcome? Do you feel like you need a little time in between projects? Just curious how other artists work.

I noticed that after each completed project I need a week or so to "regroup" and "recharge" before I start something new. But even when I'm not working on anything I have this annoying urge to get started asap but can't make a decision what it should be :)

I just start putting paint on a canvas and it kinda becomes what it wants to be, if I don't like it I cover it with more till I do. Just finished 3 new ones, may be a few days till more are started.

Well, it is a 9-5 job for me, and work seven days a week. When I working on one I usually have plan for others. As soon as I finished one I go on to the next right away. The only breaks I have are for coffee.

I usually work in spurts. I'll be thinking about images all the time but then go into the studio or an area for a few hours at a time. It usually takes me a lot longer to go through the results - selecting, editing, creating - than actual capture. Right now I'm trying to build enough stuff in the que to keep me busy in the darkest, coldest, depths of winter.

Yeah I hear you Edward. I was trying to take as many photos as I can during the summer for my winter projects too....we'll see what happens though.

Hi Oksana . When I work on my Watercolors, I will usually hang a photo up for a few days - until it comes to me how it wants to look.
I often wake up with an image in mind.
Now, when I get to painting... that can be a whole different story - because it usually does what it wants.
Still, I like to have an idea in mind.

& Yes ! Like you - when I complete a painting - I am exhausted. Glad to have it done. Eager to work on another. But I must shake that image off - before I can start fresh again.

I work on photographs between paintings when I can't start something new yet due to other projects going on. It's a good way to take a break from the other, & yet still focused on Art.

I get in my car (with my pitbull in the back). I drive around town and while I am driving (but not moving/having pulled over to the curb) I take photographs mainly of people on the street. I do this 3 times a week. Then I come home and post process my images. Some I do as straight images, some I doll up in the manner of expressionism/fauvism/wild beasts of color.
I then upload some to FAA, some to Flickr, some to Facebook.

I repeat as many times I can during the year.

Hi Oksana....for me I'm all over the place....Inspiration hits me all the time! I get an overwhelming urge to get something on paper.....often I will sketch an idea into my iPad and save it or I will jot down a colour pallet scheme I thought of ...maybe a dream lead me to a concept I want to try. Music! music always gives me inspiration,...I could hear a line from a song or even just hear a glorious instrumental or acoustic rendition and be moved to put my feelings on paper.....I often put "feeling" into my work,.......I've been told that's a huge mistake but so far it's working for me.

I often have many projects on the go and rotate through them....I get bored fast and Must be In the mood for what I'm working on. my work has two sides a darker side and a lighter......so mood is important when I'm trying to get "into it" ......

For me I'm already panning my next drawing as I'm working on the present one...I never ever shut off......however I do take brakes when working on the projects I just never seem to stop compiling ideas ....they are constantly coming to me....so much in fact it drives my husband BoNKeRZ.........scheming and planning and getting it on paper is such a rush!

Thank you for sharing your experiences. It's interesting to read about how others work.

I work out details when i'm laying in bed trying to sleep. Maybe that's why get very little sleep. I have about 10 projects in progress. When I get stuck or bored with something, I just stop for a while and move back to something else.

I'm also a note to myself guy. That means that when an idea hits me, I'll jot it down on paper and put it in a big envelope of things to do. The envelope is huge and I just kind of pick out a piece of paper like a drawing when I'm ready for something new.

Well I guess its all in the mood for me Oksana. And a dash of inspiration. I can create 2-3 artworks all at the same time. Since Im dealing with a wet medium I just had to be fast in creating my pieces. If Im so excited with a certain artpiece I work even past the wee hours, until I know Im satisfied with what I've done with that piece. Oh by the way Im a papier mache artist Oksana.

Hi Oksana, I work on my pieces almost every day...with a full time job I wish there were more hours in the day to do this. I probably have fifty pieces started at any one time... more if I count the thumbnails. Sometimes I jump around ...sometimes finishing a piece if I like how it is going or work on something else or if I get an idea I will start a new piece. If I like how something is working I might just stick with that...really just depends on how I feel ...what I feel like doing.
