Contests

I am relatively new to FAA and I have recently been adding my work to various contests. Why is it that the contest requirements are not met by at least 25% of the entrants? For example I joined a contest for steam locomotives and an explicit instruction was no trains ie no following rolling stock. At least 25% of the entries had following rolling stock such as carriages or freight wagons. The contest organiser seemed oblivious to these entries.
I am also astounded at the amount photographers uploading and entering photographs into contests with crooked horizons on seascapes and sunsets over the sea. Customers will NOT purchase canvasses or any other print with a crooked horizon. These artists are just wasting their time if they think they will get a sale. I hope i don`t sound like an old grouch but instructions for contests should be followed (by the organiser and the entrant). As for crooked horizons from photographers there is just no excuse with all the correcting software available, even at the lowest level, to correct these issues.

for one thing - without telling people what rolling stock is, most people won't know. also many think that entering contests will help them sell better and they are right. but they tend to not follow the rules, but that won't help them. i'm surprised its as low as 25% though.

many people haven't a clue how to edit their images. they think a gallery is a place that anything will sell. but they don't know the basics. at some point they will come in here and say - why am i not selling? and then we will tell then.

i just use these to advertise in, i don't much care what was entered.

the most important thing about these contests

1. they have no prize, and there isn't much glory, so who cares..
2. many have no description, or it's really confusing.
3. many don't have a proper example as a photo, for what they want.

Hi Paul, a crooked horizon drives me crazy too and you will see quite a few. I host a contest now and then and many I don't think even read the rules...I usually just delete the ones that are non compliant ...what else to do? Happens all the time...it is up to the host of the contest as to what to do...just leaving them is fine too...probably won't get any votes anyway.

Paul is right. I had a good chuckle at the entries to a contest I was looking at just last night. The thought that went through my mind was, oh the poor contest administrator!!!!! LOL!!!

Hi Lois...I hope it wasn't my Halloween contest...I'm going to have to go look at that in a minute.

Hi Paul! Welcome to FAA, btw. You are so right about some members not following rules...or editing their images well.Click on this link to see my blog re contests, as I have hosted many. I think you will find it interesting. Add a comment if you feel the urge.

At least it keeps them off the streets. :-)
