One More Question!

Hello there,
I know I asked a lot in the past. But yesterday my canon broke and now I'm without camera.
As now I need a new camera as soon as possible I wanted to ask one last time for help.
I am now sure that I want a nikon and I'm not sure between two models.
The Nikon D5300 and the D7000.
I'm sure I want one of this two cameras so please if someone knows about it please help me.
And I'm really sorry to ask again. But this question I do not ask in general. I ask just to compare these two models.
Thanks

which one has the most features - and which one can you afford?

how did you break the camera? it might be covered under insurance. the chances of someone on this particular forum having both those cameras to compare - would be slim. it would be better to find a nikon forum, they would have more people to answer you. but again its a matter of preference, what you need and what you can afford.

I can afford both.
But if someone has at least one of these cameras. So he/she could tell about.

The d7000 has a motor. That makes it compatible with a lot more new and used lenses. Plus you will pay more for nearly identical lenses just to get the one compatible with d5300. So if you plan on buying a few nice lenses the d7000 may be cheaper. The d7000 is a metal body and moisture and dust sealed. That means longer life and less repairs. Check these features for yourself.

Can you tell me more about the lens thing? What kind of lense can I use with it?

Bradford Martin

Here it depends also on your needs. I'd take the d7000 in a heartbeat. But if you never shoot in bad weather or near the beach you might not care about weatherproofiing. If you are not looking to buy more than a basic kit lens or have thousands to buy the newest ones then maybe younwant the d5300 for more pixels.

that is neat though, canon, each has a lens of its own. and the compatibility is limited. though i guess if the motor fails in the camera, then all the lenses would be kind of hard to use.

i would still vote for the d7000, though while i have no idea what other features it has, it's a higher number so it should be better. (unless it's canon and then lower is better). a sealed unit is good for the future. always get the best in your price range. i would assume at the very least it has to be a nikon lens.

http://snapsort.com/compare/Nikon-D5300-vs-Nikon_D7000 this one shows the lower model is a bit better
http://www.imaging-resource.com/cameras/nikon/d7000/vs/nikon/d5300/ looking at these sheets the better ones go backwards too, 5300 seems to be better in size of pixel and iso though this does give a pretty good side by side, it all depends - what features do you need?

The 5300 can only autofocus with the newest lenses. S series and maybe some others. For example I just bought a tokina 100 mm macro for 300 dollars used. Not compatible with the d5300. The comparable s series Nikon is around a thousand dollars.

Daniel Precht

And with which series the d7000 can autofocus?

Bradford Martin

The d7000 can autofocus with all autofocus lenses. Af series and af-s .

Daniel Precht

So I suppose on the d7000 both of these two lenses would work.

Is there a difference in the image quality of the new and the old lens? If yes is the difference really big?

Bradford Martin

Nikon introduced cameras with no motors as a way to make a more inexpensive entry level camera so they could better compete with Canon in that market. At the same time they introduced new lenses with motors. That makes for more expensive lenses. Some thing Canon had done since it introduced the EOS.

Bradford Martin

I know of no quality difference. You just pay more for the motor.

Some of the new lenses are better but the prices usually do mot justfy the quality difference. The new 80-400 is about 1200 dollars more than the old one. A better lens for sure. If you happen to have an extra 1200. The tokina i bought is every bit as sharp as the Nikon, and half the price but will not autofocus with the 5300.

On ebay those lenses are so cheap! I'm quite sure now that I'm buying the d7000

Mike Savad

they are usually cheap for a reason. i would avoid ebay and buy from a dealer that is licensed to sell them.

Bradford Martin

If you find a decent ebay dealer youshould have no problem. But you might try adorama.com. The 50 mm is always cheap to make but good quality. I think i paid about 150 new . Remember the AF is going to be cheap because it has no motor and is the older model. It might even be discontinued. Still just as good if you dont need a motor.

Daniel Precht

With the d7000 the lens needs no motor right?

Daniel Precht

So adorama.com is 100% trustable? It's really cheap. For me to buy the d7000 there used is less money as I pay second handed in € on ebay.

i trust BH more than adorama, but they are about the same in service - only they (both) are off on every jewish holiday, so getting a hold of them - hard.

I bought a 1700 lens for 1150 used from Adorama. I got a 1 year warranty, and the lens looks brand new. Very pleased. I purchased my canon 7d new from there as well.

I have the D7000. Great camera. So far, no issues. Had the camera for little over 2yrs now. It's pretty good on less noise at higher ISOs compare to other cameras I've had. I bought it through B&H, which is where I buy all my camera equipment. It's good in the rain. I was just out this morning taking pictures of rain drops while it was raining. It continues to work, no matter how wet it gets. I use both Nikon and Sigma lenses on it without any problems. At times, the live mode feature comes in handy for shots I can't get my eye to the view finder for. I've also shot video with the camera, good quality.

The lenses do not need a motor, and the camera will auto focus then lens for you.

Thanks for the feedback, Cathy - I'll be sure to forward it on to the used department, and I know they'll be delighted!

I trust Adorama more than I trust any company in the world. They are one of the oldest mail order firms. Their salesman have always given me great advice and saved me from buying things I don't need. They are also the main store for Amazon. Most other stores bait and switch. Or give you the advertised price but charge you extra for whats supposed to be included. B&H is about the same.

I have a Nikon D300. It has survived being outside out on the deck of a boat for years in the tropics in the summer and in the New England winter. It has survived being rough handled on helicopters, sea planes, Fast Rescue Vessels and commercial airlines and even has been transfered by crane. In 6 years of regular almost daily use the only thing that needed fixing was the rubber grip. That's what you get when you but a metal, sealed Nikon camera. The D7000 has a similar build.

I have a D5300 and works for me. My buddy has D7100 and works well too. If you go for a D7000, go for D7100 instead. And about the lens, that's for you to decide. You can always search what are the best lenses for landscape, macros or portraits.

Daniel Precht

I would love to buy the d7100 but I can just afford the D7000 because i also need a lens still.
The D7000 and the D5300 I find for the same price.

Tameron lenses from what I have heard are very good lenses, you can look up a comparison review of Tameron verses Canon lenses on line.

tamron makes very good lenses, but their super zooms are slow. but they do have a 6 year warranty, so that's really good.

Ok I bought the Nikon D7000.

Now I am looking for a lens that I can use now for the beginning. I have 200€ left. I know I wont get an amazing lens for that. but do you know a lens that I will get for that money? how is the nikon 18-55mm or the 18-105mm

Bradford Martin

The reviews for the 18-55 are good. The 18-105 not so much. I have the 16-85 vr dx. Very sharp but vignettes n the wide end. It all depends on how many lenses you want to have and how much you mind carrying multiple lenses and changing them vs. how sharp you want your images. You can waste a lot of time and money taking images that are acceptable instead of great. I would go for the 18-55 because it is sharp and cheap. But you would surely need to step up to a short telephoto zoom from there soon. And possibly something wider. If you ever decide to go full frame you will want full frame lenses so keep that in mind also. You can get some nice full frame lenses in the old AF series used as opposed to the AF-S
