Drive By Shootings...don't Let Being Infirm Stop You...

Because I am a bit infirm as I creep into my dotage, I had to reinvent the way I could be a street photographer. I simply can’t walk far or fast, or fast or far.

Then, as if a gift from the gods, I read an article about a New York taxi driver who (yep you guessed it) took candid photographs of people from his taxi.

Seems Mr. David Bradford also has made a name for himself with his photographs taken while driving his taxi.

I’ve seen him being interviewed on CBS “Sunday Morning.” He was talking about his new book “Drive-By Shootings,” which was released internationally this May, and has been selling strongly ever since.

So, I said to myself, if Mr. Bradford can do it, I can also. For the past two months, I have been driving about the city and taking candid images of people. Results? Wow, I am very pleased with the results.

I could never ever capture the candid people images I am now bringing home with me if I were just walking about. Just not possible.

Oh, I don’t photograph while the car is moving. As Mr. Bradford tells us....Bradford: Number one you have to make sure that you don’t impair the driving at all, otherwise don’t do it.

I photograph while stopped at a red light, or I pull over to the curb and photograph the folks as they walk by.

Good points...Bad points...
“Being able to transverse miles in one day or night, whereas walking you couldn’t do that. The downside-missing a shot because I was going too fast.”

Here is one such image of mine that I made while in my car.

I was about 8 miles from my house. I had been snapping pics for some 7 miles while in the car. I could never have walked that far even in my youth.

Robert I think what your doing is nothing less than great! I hope you can keep on taking your photographs for years to come in this manner, maybe you might catch just the right image and who knows, but if that happens or not, I know it's not your reason for doing it, but your love of the art you create.

Mario,
God bless....I am lucky in that in my old age I have found my personal "style."
I kind of think of myself as another Grandma Moses...

Anna Mary Robertson Moses (September 7, 1860 – December 13, 1961), better known by her nickname of "Grandma Moses," was a renowned American folk artist. Having begun painting in earnest at the age of 78, she is often cited as an example of an individual successfully beginning a career in the arts at an advanced age.

I'm all for late bloomers, I'm one myself I started with my sculptures at age 48 some 5 years ago, and I'm loving it!

Good for you. Love your work by the way.
I have a life long pal....He was a painter but switched to being a wood carver around the age of 45 or so. He sells his carvings for $1,000 (realistic wild ducks and birds)....

It's an interesting body of work. I learned about him a few months ago in a conversation about cameras. He apparently started out using point & shot film cameras, which makes sense considering he was driving. I haven't seen the whole book yet but would like to.

Val,
I've photographed the police making arrests and no problem. They saw me taking their pics....
While I was in my car (and stopped) I was photographing a man asking for money. When I turned to drive away, a police lady (in her car) waved to me...

I sometimes (if its possible) give the down and outers a dollar or two when they are near my car and I've taken their pics.

One young man did say something about ending my life when he mistakenly thought I was taking his pic. I was taking pics of the mature lady next to him.

But it's all good. I don't look for trouble and I avoid confrontations as much as possible. What I do is legal.

My wife does volunteer work for the police and I am a member of our community and in good standing with all. Well, not all as I was a vigliante (along with my German Shepherd) and I still have some enemies. lol....but my protection dog is dead and I am far too old for that type of fun.

Mr. Kateley,,,
Interesting that Mr Bradford used point and shoot cheap cameras. I certainly don't. But each to his own.

Oh Robert I meant while driving...I know how tempting it can be to use it while moving :)

PS...
thanks for posting images from "Drive By."
Yes, you are correct..."Ten years of shooting the city culminated in the book "Drive-By Shootings," which was published in June of 2000."

Why don't I take a cab? Only if Mr. Bradford is the cab driver (or Travis Bickle)....

Val,
lol....my second wife does not like me driving our new car while I take my drive bys...My first wife (and still business partner) says she will buy me a second hand Jeep Wrangler next year, a rough car capable of taking and giving a few bumps and bruises as I am cruising the mean streets.

I have a companion as I do my drive bys...in the back of our Subaru is one of our dogs, an American PitBull Terrier. If folks get too close to the car (while I am parked) she barks them away. (I once had a German Shepherd protection dog who got into a fight with a "real" Police dog. The cop and I were not too happy about that. lol.)

The pains that inflict my body now where caused by all the sports I played from childhood to age 50 (baseball/tennis/golf/bowling). In fact I am still bowling but even to bowl I have to take pain killers. Still it's all good.

I have 2 photos here taken with my DSLR while driving on I-95 in heavy traffic. I did not use the viewfinder.

@Robert - I don't know that he used point & shoots exclusively. The one we were discussing that he apparently used, wasn't a cheap one.

Robert I take most of my photos from moving vehicles, like the bus, cars, vans, bicycle,....and of course walking as well..... http://www.flickr.com/photos/14331875@N06/ I prefer to capture raw images, rather than have them look more contrived. I've been doing this for years.. Its an awesome way to capture real moments!

Mr. Martin,
I have taken pics from my car while Not using the camera's viewfinder. Normally I would do this with a wide angle lens or a normal 50mm lens...But just recently I used my tele 55-250 without using the viewfinder and I got lucky and got one decent candid portrait. That's why I have my ISO set at 800 even in bright sunlight so that my SS will be as fast as possible. My F stop being set at (usually) F8...

Mr. K,
Yep, also Mr. Bradford was an accomplished artist even before his venture into drive by shootings.

Ms. Frost,
Just read your comments. I am now following you on flickr...Seems like we have Drive Bys in common. Fun....Let's hope we don't bump into each other one of these days.

Thanks Robert, I'm now following you as well :) We might just drive by each other... who knows? :)

@Philip - Yes, that's what i'd heard, but not confirmed as I've never actually seen the book. They are an excellent camera imo and very simple & quick to use.
