What a little talent she is! Not a perfect copy, per se, but still unique, yes? If you have an aversion to oh-so-cute than this is not the video for you. I myself could not look away :-)

I liked the emulation of the older group.
Artists might consider imitation the ultimate compliment.
A rose from a spouse on a piece of driftwood found on a beach inspired my wild rose from a flower garden my spouse created on an old piece of wood saved from an old barn.
The old barn was torn down after an attached shed collapsed. You see the holes cut in the attic by the previous owner's daughter in order to let homing pigeons fly in and out. MNotice the old twisted glass-ball lightning rod.

Eva Cassidy passed away at only 33. Here, she sings Sting's masterpiece, live and unadorned. It is, I think, her masterpiece.
Can an interpretation be as powerful as the original? Can it be more powerful? Is there anything at all to be gained by copying?

Interpretation is the keyword,it's very different from copying. To me it is.
Interpretation can be as powerful as the original. It can even be more powerful.
Both YouTubes are amazing! Thanks for posting them Dan.

Im usually not too big a fan of gimmicks in music, but I definitely have a soft spot for Dread Zeppelin, whose work is more transformative than copying.
Then, when it comes to covers my favorite at this point in time has to be Jeff Buckley's rendering of Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah.
She's scary good. I think an interpretation can be even better than the original. I prefer Joe Cocker's version of "With a Little Help from My Friends" to the Beatles' version. Just my opinion, but I thought Cocker walloped the hell out of that song.
That was enjoyable. Yes, interpretations can be even better than the original. I've been playing a collection of Sergio Mendes remixed with other artists, including hip hop (not sure if that's the right term... where the original and new interpretation are blended), and it is super!. I've always loathed "Evergreen" as sung by Barbara Streisand, but once I heard a new interpretation with punchy drumbeat, it's become a favorite! I say bring it on.

Dean, those are both fantastic contributions. I've seen a lot of the Dred Zep vids, but not that one. I love their combinations. Cohen's Hallelujah has always been a favorite; Buckley knocks it out of the park with his rendition.

Loved that by Eva...added to my favs. Here is another great 'interpretation'. I believe in an interview, Bettye Lavette said she didn't know or listen to the original version before she did this version.
Right on, Peggy! Cocker's interpretation -- his whole performance, in fact -- of that Beatles classic has always been the gold standard for me.

Hiya Dan,
Here is my female favorite singer of all time ...anyway since Judy Garland died.

"I say bring it on."
Me too, Patricia. The examples in this thread are outstanding. Without even trying, we are each unique. All we have to do is apply our unique skills, our interpretation, our vision to the world around us. We cripple ourselves mightily when we ignore what has gone before. Embrace it. Use it!! Put yourself into it.

Melissa, thank you for Bettye's version. She couldn't be The Who if she tried. Nor does she need to be. She is uniquely, beautifully herself. I don't think anyone in the audience that night thought "Eh, she copied that. Not so hot."
She took the song and the audience to a whole 'nother place!

Here is Sissel as a young woman, around 23 years old. But she still had that world famous voice. I listen to her while I am working. One of my very favorite renditions of hers is "Auld Lang Syne."

Hiya Hal,
Stunning selection! I know she is a lot of people's favorites.
The quality of the contributions here is blowing me away.

"JUST WOW WITH THAT LITTLE GIRL AMAZING"
Okay, good, it wasn't just me having a moment. She RAWKED it!

Yes that little girl did "Rawk!" Unusual for a girl that young to be on key and be that expressive in her voice, I think she was trilling. Performance like that takes hours and hours of practice and at her age is practically impossible, apparently she is very mature for her age and loves to perform. We should never take singing on key for granted!
Interesting she sang "Field Of Gold" here is the same song sung by Peter Hollens, Tyler Ward guests of Lindsey Stirling. I just discovered Peter Hollens today who only uses his voice for all music on his tracts, no instruments. Talk about acapella singing!
Peter Hollens, acapella extradinare!

Another music thread? Really? Well, I guess if it's cool with the mods, it's cool with me. I do so love music.
Should all the posts be covers?
I was gonna post a Shirley Temple song, but I guess child prodigies is not the topic....
This is Linda Ronstadt covering a Warren Zevon song.
And....
While one must certainly give credit to Leonard Cohen for both writing the song, and performing it, this cover---out of so many others---is my favorite.
"It's not hard to see why Crowe's Hallelujah -- recorded in a single take -- is popular. It's one of Leonard Cohen's most affecting songs, and the 26-year-old, accompanying herself on piano, makes it her own with raw honesty and formidable vocal power. It's simultaneously heart-breaking and redemptive, and it has captured the imaginations of people around the world. 'The song itself is just so emotionally resonant,' Crowe said modestly this week." ~ Adrian Chamberlain, Times Colonist (Canada)

Sorry, Dean. Just saw your post of Jeff Buckley's cover. Another good rendition, yet in my opinion the vocals are a bit weak..... :-( Allison's are much stronger)
Thank you, Peggy, for posting Joe's version of “A Little Help...”
I nearly posted that one on the other music thread the other night, but posted something different. Nevertheless, it is an excellent choice.
Meanwhile, the little darling in the OP is a Ukrainian girl living in Moscow. I would attempt to write her name out---it appears in the video during the first few bars she sings, as well as being displayed on the set---but, unfortunately our alphabet doesn't contain quite as many letters as the Russian alphabet.
She is indeed a prodigy. I love the confidence in her stride when she takes the stage. :-)
Meanwhile here are some other prodigies. My favorite is Kang Enju at age seven. My goodness, the guitar is bigger than she is!
Her performance starts at the 3:13 mark.
By the way, when I am able to, I love to listen to From The Top, on NPR.

She is awesome Dan...bet she will be around for a long time! Sometimes I think the original artist just can't be topped and other times I like an interpretation better....just depends.
@ Peggy love Cockers version!
@ Dean Wainright will always be my favorite version
@Suzanne Been following Ward since he started...always loved his airplanes: But find it to be an exact rendition.
@Walter thanks for posting that one!!!
I like Allison Crows vocals but find it to be again an exact rendition...I never find that too exciting. I personally love to here original interpretations of a piece...like rock a classical...turn a metal into a ballad...or rock it more...know what I mean?

Why it pays to copy the masters....
"Wolfgang Beltracchi is a name you may never have heard before. Very few people have. But his paintings have brought him millions and millions of dollars in a career that spanned nearly 40 years. They have made their way into museums, galleries, and private collections all over the world. What makes him a story for us is that all his paintings are fakes. And what makes him an unusual forger is that he didn’t copy the paintings of great artists, but created new works which he imagined the artist might have painted or which might have gotten lost. Connoisseurs and dealers acknowledge that Beltracchi is the most successful art forger of our time -- perhaps of all time. Brilliant not only as a painter, but as a conman of epic proportions."

Val,
I was talking about Peter Hollens, Ward happened to be in the first song with Hollens. Ward did do a nice job though in the song, very good with his emotions.

Dan, here is a rendition of a song that has been sung thousands of times but was always sung in the same accepted way until this version came along. It shows you what a little creativity can do in music. BTW, I am not posting this as a political statement - only a creative statement.

BTW Dan, that little 4 year old Russian girl captivated me too. I posted an article about her way back. Her name is Anastasia Petrik. But I think she has lost some of that unique attraction in her voice and her face as she has gotten older. I forgot how old she is now.
Harold, they did a great job, very emotional! The "Star Spangled Banner" has a wide vocal range, everyone can't sing it, the singer got around it with a clever arrangement. The lead is a talented singer.
Val,
They can bring it! Made me want to git up and clog! So how old were they a couple of years ago?!! Amazing technique at such a young age.
That is an excellent voice she has at such a young age. And doing those growls, man at her age, that is good!
Here is one rendition I like of a song by Renaissance, performed by Blackmore's Night; Ocean Gypsy.

Dan,
A haunting lovely work. I didn't know Ritchie Blackmoor is a well known guitarist. He has certainly aged well and looks very strong and far younger than his years.

Suzanne, He left the rock scene to go after music he loved. He and his wife (Candice Night) and their baby are touring and performing in many Renaissance Festivals, as well as stage performances. Yes he has aged well for his time, and I like this music much more than his older stuff.
