Collectors Are Requesting Images Larger Than 60 X 40

In the past three days I've had two email requests for images printed larger than 60 x 40. I've already told the first person that it's not possible for the images to be printed as large as she was requesting and I explained why. The second person wants several images printed larger than is possible. I've not yet responded to her request. I hate to miss out on the sales. How is everyone else responding to these types of requests?

I'm sure there are printers out there that can produce bigger. You will obviously need to have files suitable for that size.

My suggestion would be to not tell people it can't be done. Tell them that while FAA currently does not print larger than that, you will do what you can to find a printer that will. Anytime I am a consumer, I hate to hear "No." but love to hear, "I'll see what I can do."

Heidi, just a week or so ago, I had a buyer wishing to purchase an electronic digital image. My image was suitable on FAA to print a 48".
He wanted to have it blown up and put on a 4 X 3 meter wall! I was a little worried whether I would refund part or all of his money if it didn't work. I did add a texture to the image before sending to him, and sent a 30mb TIFF image.
Anyway, the purchaser sent me an email a few days later attaching a photo of it on his wall and was very happy!
So I guess it can be done as this one was HUGE.

if you don't think you'll lose much detail, increase it to 6200px and you can print a 72". it really depends on the piece and if you can get away with it. beyond that, there are many that will try to convince you to send the file to them so they can stretch it to insane sizes. i simply say no to those. partly because i don't think they could afford my prices. but mostly i don't want them to have the file and i don't want my image looking dumb and stretched.

the whole reason you typically can't is because up close it may look terrible, and on this site if returned they lose money. it can be done. you can take a phone image and stretch it on a bill board. they look terrible, but you can do it. if the client is happy, then that's fine. many of mine couldn't stretch due to noise or fine detail loss issues.

I've had so many of them, I've had to hire a secretary just to help with it all the requests. Yeah, I wish. :)

Heidi I had the same request from a design director outfitting a new hotel in the Boston area. I finally gave up after trying to comply to his requests. I have directed him to our designer prints site and left it at that.

I had a request for an image they wanted to print a wall wrap - I directed them to the licensing site where they could buy the full res image for one time use, they were the printers - their client picked that image. They could see the pixel size there, and decide for themselves if it would work. They did just that, and I made a big sale.

I only ever had one. Well actually 2 separate email requests for different prints from the same buyer. That made it look like a scam. They wanted something crazy like a 15 foot(5m) print. I didn't say no. I asked what the purpose would be and explained I could arrange it but the viewing distance would have to be very far. I never heard back.

The simplest way to do it would be to license them the image and suggest a printer. I have licensed thousands of images so it is no big deal for me as long as i can get some background on the person or company and the price is right.

If you want to do it through FAA (72" max?) and you had an upsized file you would have to load it as a separate file and have them buy that version. It may not pass the inspection process. In some cases this might be the wisest thing to do.

If it is larger then what FAA can handle then obviously you are going to have to order it at a specialty printer. This can be very risky and i would only do this if paid in full before shipping.

I have seen very large prints work fine in the right situation. The right situation wold be a very big viewing distance. Often it would be in a commercial setting. A band I work with uses them for behind the stage.

I just got a request for a 90" canvas. The person just got the go ahead to do it. I'm going to get it printed locally.

And this is why I moved from a Canon 5D mkIII to the Nikon D810,,,,I have requests too but I think anything larger than 48 is really pushing the resolution to an extreme. Infact, I have limited the size of some of my prints because the quality at such a large size will not be good..And, I dont want a return based upon that!

Excellent advice. Never say no when there are other options and resources available to you. Always tell them you will see what you can do for them ... and then do your best to find the solution.

Thank you all. I'll have to see what size the second person wants and then explore options. I wouldn't want to sell an image lacking in quality because it was stretch beyond what it was intended to be. This is tough.

The first request was to have an image that I have available at a max of 48" printed to a minimum of 75" wide.
