Old Glass Negatives

Asking for a friend... can anyone recommend a place that will print from really old glass negatives?

Major metropolitan markets have Photography Centers, rental darkrooms, camera stores etc. that should be able to print from a glass neg. Post back the area you're in and I can maybe suggest a few businesses that can help. I could do it, but the risk of shipping it is more than I'd really want to share unless you become really desparate.

If at all possible, I would look for a service that can do a Hi-Res scan of the glass negative for you so that you can do your own retouching and make your own prints. There are even people who advertise scanning services on Craigslist.

Glass negatives are tough to scan and cheap scanners will not focus properly. But ultimately if you choose a service or purchase a scanner, it's important to have one that can be manually focused.

She's in NH... Boston is close enough. We can do a google search ourselves easy enough, but was hoping for more specific recommendations if others had used a lab they liked.

Check with Hunt's Photo. They are the store and know the market really well. It doesn't make sense to buy a scanner for one image, but if there are dozens, they could be scanned and then the scanner sold. I'd check with Hunt's, they've been in the Northeast for about 100 years and can best advise your friend.

Or try to find in Your area a vintage photography geek with old stuff...

Heather,

Have your friend look for a "local" camera club, which will have people with darkrooms still. I wouldn't ship glass negatives anywhere, especially if they are important to family or history. some scanners do have a focusing ability, my old epson did, if I remember correctly and if I had a choice, I'd scann everyone,BEFORE doing anything.

A good camera club will have lots of contacts and will know where and how to get your prints made, but I would try and scan first, just in case...........

Thanks guys... found a place in RI... a little farther, but might work.

Rich has great advice and if the RI 'location doesn't panout, talk to Gary Farber at Hunt's, his family owns the chain.
