Often, on some level, even revolution in art is plagiarism.

Brilliant.

Everything is a remix.

Yeah, I can't figure out how some Artist copy my work before I even make it. Lol

Bradford Martin

Absolutely, although revolutionary is a very overused term.

This Revolting Plagiarist agrees and enjoys the fruits found in the Art of Plagiarism...

Or, in the mind of the beholder, what is fake and what is real?

I suggest you read Sam Harris' new book, 'Waking Up.'

I think this is right up there with "No man is an island" It's hard not to be influenced by others. Even if you are trying to create a revolutionary work of art, you are influenced by the fact that you want to go far beyond what others have done before.

This quote is relevant only to the era and culture in which it comes out of.
Each term's meaning has changed over the last 100 years or so.

Ronald Walker

Drew I think the meaning is clear.

Ronald, 100 to 150 years ago, art had a different meaning. Gauguin was in the middle of the era of the newly developing black & white photography that was altering to the meaning of art.

Ronald Walker

Perhaps, what do you think he meant?

Drew

@ Ronald: considering the era, art was a copy from nature and/or existing objects or it was propaganda. Because painting was still in vogue, do to color had not been developed in photography, artists were in the very end of the golden age. The definition of art was a lot less dynamic therefore less philosophical than if the quote originated today.

Yup. I use my cameras to plagiarize nature. :)
