The Worst Critic

Seems as if every artist has their critics, my worst was my cat Pablo. I was working in my garage preparing a painting for an upcoming exhibition, ran inside the house to get something and when I returned a few minutes latter there was a large pile of cat vomit right in the center of the work. Who's your worst critic?

I'd consider a No Kill shelter for the cat, provided the cat makes the trip.

Loved that cat, died several years ago. Must admit I was not pleased with him on that day!

lol....oh my, sorry to hear that. maybe it was just the smell of the paint and nothing to do with your artistry.

I think my worst critic was one of my neighbours a few years ago.
He dropped over for coffee, looked around at my painting hung on one wall of my studio and said; "you do this therapy right, I mean you don't think your going to sell your work right....

I smiled and said; yup.... just for therapy....it stops me from from talking to as*****holes..... he moved away. Yay!!

Have a great day
Cheers, Barbara

All know is, you can't copyright the vomit. ;)

@Barbara. Wow, nothing like friendly support.

I think it's a fine line to listen to critics for what you can learn, but at the same time have a thick enough skin to continue with what you are doing if you believe in it.

I have a bit of a story regarding an art teacher. I used to draw a lot, but have not for years. My older son was interested at about 12 or 13 and I thought the 2 of us taking a class together would be a good thing. The teacher was so critical that he ended up in tears in the class. I felt terrible and wished I'd never taken him. He stopped drawing.

HW Kateley, that person had no business teaching art!

I agree with you. Curiously, even though she had been hired as a drawing teacher, It wasn't what she did. She had a strong bias against anything realistic and seemed to consider that a lower art form. She had many more biases as well. I went to one of her shows and ultimately decided she was just full of crap and carrying the artist persona as a promotion of self.

My worst critic seems to be FAA since they do not promote my work.

My worst is my brother he hates my abstracts.

HW Kateley, The issue I have is that the art teacher should be able to work in a wide variety of ways with a large range of personalities and styles. We are very different from each other and there is no right way to work. In other words if you are attracted to abstract or realist or whatever the teacher should be knowledgeable and flexible enough to help guide the student.

I think to date, an FAA group admin who rejected all of my submissions to the group. Wasn't a fan of my art!! ;) Moving on...

I don't know the guy but I had set up my table in front of my house with my copper sculptures, and this guy after looking at all my art asked me" what's the scrap price of copper these days"?

I don't know about worst critics but... several years ago I was sitting in my kitchen with my realtor, who had sold us our home in NJ. He was talking about decorating his apartment after his recent divorce. I suggested he go online and look at FAA and specifically my page. His responses was, "I have, I didn't like your work."

Well then.

LOL, Mario and Kevin. Nothing like honesty.

Being mostly into photography, I don't get those comments. I just get the usual "wow, you must have a really good camera" comment. Although I do have a couple of abstract oil paintings at home my daughter just looked at disdainfully and said she didn't like them (she has an art degree). Ok, then....

Just another story...I went to school in Kansas but lived in Southern California. I was in California and packed my car full of the paintings I had finished for my thesis show, the night before going back to Kansas. When I came out in the morning to leave I found out my car had been broken into, the window had been smashed etc. The radio had been ripped out and taken along with a few other things. To my relief my paintings had not been touched. Thinking about it latter I thought "Hey are my paintings not good enough to steal!" Critics come in a variety of professions I guess.

If you make this thread private I'd be happy to share. :)

A member of my family who told me that one day, if I worked hard, I may be a painter but they doubted it. This was just a month or two ago. 'Sigh'

Harsh.

What all this says is "listen to yourself".

after selling my work on the streets of new york city for several years, i've heard it all and its toughened me up. now i only listen to constructive criticism. the rest disappears into the universe. ;)
