Will You Help Me Price A Licensing Deal ?

Good evening everyone, most of the time I can do this on my own since most of the licensing deals are fairly small. But this one is a bit bigger. It's an award winning Jazz pianist in a trio group coming out with a 2nd album that is being distributed by a record label in NY, the title of the album is going to be "Peculiar People" lol, and they say many of my paintings would fit their music perfectly which I can see, they are torn between 7 images and are having a meeting tonight to discuss them. I just don't know what to charge for this one. Was thinking there should be a flat fee + royalties but not sure how much. Funny thing is another Jazz pianist licensed another image last week for online sales only and that was easier to price. I told this new pianist "What, is there a mad dash for my work for Jazz pianists this month?" lol
Here is one of the strong contenders for the Album cover out of 7 they like:

Your work is so inventive! No wonder it’s chosen by Jazzy people. As for specific licensing charges, I haven’t a clue as I’ve never been in that situation but I would be interested in knowing how one finds out about the art licensing process. I can only relate an experience I had years ago with a business partner. When asked, what I thought I should receive as compensation for my efforts on a particular project, I responded with; “Well, if I get paid too much then I’ll feel guilty and if I don’t get paid enough then I’ll feel cheated!” So, let that be your guide! I hope this helps.

Thanks Bob, wish I could see what people see from the outside lol. Good thought what you said on business partner thing. I have had a few book deals, I wonder if it would be similar but more since it is the cover, I just don't want to cut myself short. This man is getting more info from his album distributor about the amount and other questions I have so hopefully that will help me get the price also, just don't know where to start with this.

Here's the plan, Leah, how to wrap this deal up. :))

and I thought you were serious Jeffrey lol, never saw this movie ,so it is very interesting :) should I ask billion? million? lol

I was thinking 750. to 1000. initially and 5 cents to 10 cents a copy for royalties, but I could be aiming too low or I could be a few hundred too high, see this is why I was hoping to find someone who might have more of a feel

Leah,

Just a suggestion, but have you thought about Fotoquote pricing software? Check out their video on the home page.

Personally, my licensing right now is set at $450 plus $.04 per unit royalties. Since you paint, though, there's more time in it to create the artwork.

4 cents? that seems so low, 450. for some things I can see like strictly internet sales like one image on a page. When it's printed in bulk it should be more. I am already licensed with a major poster company that pays me 30 cents for each copy and get paid quarterly ,they sell internationally and to college book stores and Spencer gift stores for my Poe painting, it's working out pretty good., maybe my initial base could be lower like 550. +10 cents a copy sold

You have a following which is great. I'm testing the waters with my current prices - picked up one already - but can always adjust in time. I'm not here for the money, so to speak. Anything I make here is play money.

hope I get there some day where it's play money. I am supporting my disabled husband and my daughter. Need it for gas, groceries, paint supplies, propane, paper towels etc. What I always say Jeffrey one can always come down but not go up. I have done about 10 to 12 licensing deals this year alone ,some for colleges and always start a bit higher. Last week I had to come down to support this new jazz musician with his work since he could not afford my regular price, but he was sooo set on the image and I felt for him, I had to wait till his payday to get paid from his day job but I always need to keep in mind this is my whole job with no other options at the moment and my family needs to eat also :)

I understand your situation, Leah, and my heart goes to you and your family. You have to make things work for you - that's the most important part. People gravitate to your art, and that's an important ace up your sleeve. Mine, on the other hand - if they want it - great, if not, no big deal. The sun still comes up tomorrow either way for me.

Somehow, I'm confident you'll close the deal :))

I am pretty sure I will close the deal, he is very set on my work. I hope some day it won't be a big deal to me for sales as much, it is a big weight on me. I am not religious at all but I prayed a few nights ago(more spiritually than religious) like I sometimes do since the responsibilities on me physically and mentally and financially it helps actually alleviate it all on me. I wished ,I know for monetary stuff like more original sales, prints sales and licensing deals, since it's ALL I have to keep things going :( ,well weird as it is, I sold an original off Etsy yesterday, a print here yesterday and got the email for the licensing deal today, so that is really weird wouldn't you say? It covering all 3? I don't have easy buttons too often ,but it made me feel good so close together in my 3 areas

Just stay away from $9 billion and you'll be fine :))

Whatever you decide on, get a contract. http://vimeo.com/22053820 Excellent information in this seminar by Mike Monteiro.
This also has some very good advice: http://www.nolo.com/legal-encyclopedia/licensing-artwork-negotiating-monitoring-royalty-payments-30093.html

Good luck! Glad you are being recognized for your original art.
