Selling Unauthorized Copyrighted Art By Famous Artist

I sent this message to FAA on 8/18/2014 about people selling copies of famous paintings on FAA;

I have a real problem with members of this community selling copies of art from famous artists. Members such as Augusta Stylianou from Limassol - Cyprus has over 16 pages of copies of art from almost every well know artist that has ever lived. How is it she can get by with selling copies of other artists work and why is FAA letting her and many many more do that? I thought the idea of this site was to promote artists who are living and who present art that is their own. If we can just go thru the internet and copy famous artists work and sell it on our pages doesn't that poison what this site is all about?

I am very disturbed about this and I would like to see FAA clean up and prohibit such unlawful sales of copy righted work that is owned by museums and private collectors. If this is not curtailed promptly, I am sure that the museums would be very interested in every sale that has been made here on FAA of copy writted and protected works by masters.

I have made copies of this message and plan to forward them to the curators of several well known museums if this matter is not taken care of at once.

Sincerely,
Alan Lakin

I'm on your side. This site's motto says something about "the world's greatest *living* artists", doesn't it?

Although I understand FAA's dilemma; there is just so MUCH stuff here, screening content's gotta be a female canine...

I am also in agreement with you, but when it comes to the work of the old masters, there is really nothing you can do about it. There is case law on the copiers side.

http://flyingfox.jonathanjanson.com/2013/03/04/do-museums-have-copyrights-on-their-old-master-paintings-no-not-really/#.U_LE2xizn3A is only one example so notifying the museums would probably be a waste of time.

We just have to produce or show the best art we can and let it stand on its own merit and our ability to market it.

Some artists' works are in the public domain and can therefore be sold legally. And naming and shaming is against FAA policy.

You can do the same if you want, same goes for NASA images for example. Me, I think those who can do, those who can't copy.

Are you sure they are copyrighted? Read up on Public Domain and see if any of what you are alleging can fall in that category. -W

I will forward your concerns to FAA Support.

In addition to living artists there are tons of stock agencies and copies of old works that may be in the public domain. Just the way it is.
