Autoplay On Facebook App Killing Wireless Data Plans

If you have an iPhone and use the Facebook app, you might want to listen for a second.
The Facebook app has Autoplay for videos selected as "On" by default, which means that you will be streaming data constantly while checking your newsfeeds. I was recently asked by some of my friends who got enormously large phone bills due to data overages and come to find out, it was this feature via Facebook.
I got lucky, because I have an unlimited data plan.

I wrote a tutorial to show you how to turn autoplay off on your iPhone - http://fluffyshotme.com/helpful-tips/2014/08/disable-autoplay-videos-on-facebook-app-ios-7/

If you use the Facebook app on your phone, check with your carrier and see if you have been hogging data for the last month or so.

I got tired of AT&T and Verizon and all their data charges and service issues. Sprint has been a breath of fresh air compared to those two.

Thanks David. I bet by turning that off it may help with the battery drainage too. I also shared your blog.

Thank you Darice. Yes, you should see some improvement in your battery life as well.

@Adam - As you can see, I am with AT&T, but I have an unlimited data plan. Streaming videos that you are not actively watching is a waste resources and in my opinion, completely unnecessary. I am still wondering why Facebook would make it default to autoplay without at least giving clear direction to users how to disable this nightmarish feature.

Facebook probably charges advertisers more for doing that and the wireless companies won't complain either.

I was grandfathered into the AT&T unlimited data plan too but they started throttling it big time. Then no data for a month and no answers and no fix.

Someone is getting paid more for those FB ads to auto run, No doubt!

Thanks for the tip, David. I turned mine off and shared your info with many other people. Much appreciated.

. . this is important news . alarming actually . . . I haven't connected my iphone with fb and probably never will for privacy and security purposes . . honestly I cannot imagine why anyone would give facebook access to their cell phone and contact list . they are much too invasive . . yet this is beneficial information so I am posting a comment to move this back to the top of the forum list . . . thank you David . . . .
