Roku Anyone?? Have Question

Anyone use a Roku instead of cable? Are there channels that will do continuous stream of play and not have to select a single program? Does that make sense? I purchased 2 units for myself and my mom and have hooked hers up. We wanted to see if this could replace cable for us. Thing is, she likes to have her tv on 24/7 on either cnn or msnbc, which I don't think we can get those channels but my question is can some news feed stream continuous with this thing??

crap...I don't think this is going to work for her 24/7 news feed...she sleeps with news playing too...

Looks great for other stuff but not looking like this is going to work :/

okay, did find live news feed but it jumped off because of download time so she is going to sleep with news on the laptop tonight! I think I'll need to upgrade my internet speed maybe to keep that from happening or we'll need to get her a newer tv, hers is a fat old one and I hooked it up with the roku 2 with the yellow, red, white cable...thingies...!

If I can find her cnn international live feed through roku and or msnbc live feed, life will be grand.

I don't think anyone is reading this now, but I'm updating in case someone can jump in with advice eventually.

edit at 3:30am...found a blog with links for cnn international and others for your roku, will try later....after I sleep a bit!

There are a few live feed news channels available on the ROKU. I love my ROKU but my frustration with all this is that there aren't really any good, total replacements for cable, yet. The technology is available, the shows and services are out there, but there isn't any one stop shop to get it all in one place without have a good technical background setting up your own media server. I'm a techie and I think this is too painful to do.

I think you are out of luck with the channels you want - but look here anyway: https://www.roku.com/now-playing?sp=1&gclid=CNTL9Z7Wi8ACFVQV7AodZkoAjg

yellow, red, white thingies are called "RCA Cables" I believe. Something us old folks would use to hook up video and stereo sound feeds. ;-)

Ha! rca cables, I couldn't think of the term. I'm an mid-old folk too at 50. Okay, I was able to add CNN International as a channel but it just wouldn't upload. Also had trouble with the SkyNews channel live stream too, it played for a few minutes then buffered and went back to the main Sky News page. The wireless speed I think is actually okay at 10.77pm whatevers for downloading but upload was 1.06. Pings were 24 ms? somethings? Speedcheck through my internet co. which is business class which is supposed to be higher speeds than residential.

Whatever....I can see Roku working in some situations or as an add-on but for us this will not be a good replacement at this time, but maybe in the future when they do some of what Chuck mentioned. I do not have the patience or a techie friend to come 'reset' my dns or do this or that and then blah blah blah like some of the helpful advice on the Roku discussion boards. It's just more than I want to know about. We will just suck it up and pay the damn cable bill for now....and be spoiled! I've rehooked the cable box up (dusted under the tv too) and packed up the Roku and will be taking it back now.

Thanks everyone for trying to help, much appreciated :o)
