Tags - Keywords - Algorithm

. 'ae . . on our AW site we cannot see the keywords . there is no field for tags at all . .
. on FAA we can . .

It seems Sean has moved/migrated our keywords from beneath our images to the bottom of the page not too long ago and now again they have been moved and designated to the lower right side beneath our stats . . plus he has limited the display to 10 tags on our FAA gallery . I do like many of the changes and improvements on the site . . . but I have some questions . . . .

On the subject of our tags on FAA we see 10 tags and may choose to click on "See All" but it isn't really see all . .
For most of my images have between 450 - 500 keywords embedded within the meta data . .
Yet beneath each of my images there is a variable number of tags displayed when clicking on "See All" . . .

To optimize our meta description and meta keyword tags for Google search results many of us choose them carefully and embed them within our meta data before publishing . . and they are included in autofill when we upload them . . so whether or not they are actually working or have been "boosted" or are effectively rendered useless is a mystery . . .
It is true . yes . . that someone chooses whose keywords are active . . or not?
Ultimately Sean chooses which images rise to the top . . . .

When clicking on "See All" some images show 40 tags . some 43 . some 50 . one displayed 52 . some show 47 . . . so it isn't actually displaying ALL the tags . . only a portion of them . . and it isn't consistent .

I've been extensively researching this subject and thought I would share the results with you .. .

This quote is interesting to note . .
Quote from Official Google Webmaster Central Blog:
http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/2009/09/google-does-not-use-keywords-meta-tag.html

"Q: Does Google ever use the "keywords" meta tag in its web search ranking?
A: In a word, no. Google does sell a Google Search Appliance, and that product has the ability to match meta tags, which could include the keywords meta tag. But that's an enterprise search appliance that is completely separate from our main web search. Our web search (the well-known search at Google.com that hundreds of millions of people use each day) disregards keyword metatags completely. They simply don't have any effect in our search ranking at present.

Q: Why doesn't Google use the keywords meta tag?
A: About a decade ago, search engines judged pages only on the content of web pages, not any so-called "off-page" factors such as the links pointing to a web page. In those days, keyword meta tags quickly became an area where someone could stuff often-irrelevant keywords without typical visitors ever seeing those keywords. Because the keywords meta tag was so often abused, many years ago Google began disregarding the keywords meta tag.

Q: Does this mean that Google ignores all meta tags?
A: No, Google does support several other meta tags. This meta tags page documents more info on several meta tags that we do use. For example, we do sometimes use the "description" meta tag as the text for our search results snippets, as this screenshot shows:

Even though we sometimes use the description meta tag for the snippets we show, we still don't use the description meta tag in our ranking.

Q: Does this mean that Google will always ignore the keywords meta tag?
A: It's possible that Google could use this information in the future, but it's unlikely. Google has ignored the keywords meta tag for years and currently we see no need to change that policy.

Here is another interesting discussion on the topic . .

quote: "What about ranking better with the tag. I mentioned already that many experienced SEOs don’t find it useful. Believe me, if just putting a single word into that tag was going to rank your page better, everyone would be doing it. Instead, search for anything on Yahoo or Ask. You’ll see plenty of pages ranking well for words without those words appearing in the meta keywords tag. And if you do see the words in the tag, it’s more due to coincidence — the words also appear in the body copy, in the title tag and often in links pointing at the page. The words in the meta keywords tag aren’t the primary reason the page is ranking well. Promise.

Back to our Basset Hound example. Sure, you can add the correct spelling to your meta keywords tag. Go ahead, if you want. Just understand that it is not likely to make you rank any better than if you didn’t include it at all. Moreover, beginners are especially likely to spend far too long worrying about getting the “right” words in the meta keywords tag rather than just writing good body copy."

"Other Uses - I mentioned that misspellings were a key use for the tag. You could also use it for synonyms. For example, if you have a page all about shoes and you never say “footwear,” you could put that word in your tag. However, it’s far better if you just find a way to make use of the word in the body copy itself. That text is retrieved by all the major search engines, not just some.

Aside from synonyms, perhaps you have a page that’s all Flash or all images. Use the meta keywords tag to describe the page. Just remember that you’re still not likely to rank better than other pages that have textual information. Search engines are textual creatures. Give them what they want."
end quote . .

In the global context of the Web it is important to know which human language a page was written in. This is discussed in the section on language information.
Specify language variants of this document" http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/struct/dirlang.html#language-info

Provide keywords and descriptions
"Some indexing engines look for META elements that define a comma-separated list of keywords/phrases, or that give a short description. Search engines may present these keywords as the result of a search. The value of the name attribute sought by a search engine is not defined by this specification."

"A common use for META is to specify keywords that a search engine may use to improve the quality of search results. When several META elements provide language-dependent information about a document, search engines may filter on the lang attribute to display search results using the language preferences of the user." http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/struct/global.html#edef-META

Yes it was quite some time ago . . but it is still relevant yes?

So . please enlighten and educate us Sean and give us the real scoop on the subject of tags . . . .
• Are our tags really useful?
• Are our Titles and Descriptions more important than our tags for our ranking in the search engine results?

There are two absolute truths to your question the first is that Google will never, ever discuss how they determine search rankings, and any information that claims to be from Google and discusses search rankings is wrong, misguided, or untrue, and the second is that no image would ever need 400 or 500 hundred tags or keywords this practice alone would discount the image and lower the search rankings significantly. Four or five well chosen descriptive keywords or tags will elevate your images in the search rankings, and anymore will make it spam and in some cases get it removed from search.

What Sooner Photo says I've heard many times before. The tags on FAA I understand too are more for FAA ranking, and what Google and other Search Engines read are the titles and descriptions of our artwork.

Explain please because I fail to see the relationship between using excessive tagging and search results, and the link you provided. If you want search engines to rank you and your work high in the results, there are no shortcuts. Google and all search engines require new, unique, and pertinent information to obtain high rankings. So create a blog or website, do the work and provide good content, incorporate your work into that good, unique, original, pertinent content, and forget about excessive tagging and such as a quick fix. Backlinks from websites like FAA used to give some benefit in the past, but now they have little or no positive affect. It's all about the content, your content, and original content no shortcuts allowed :)

btw...the so-called Official Google Webmaster Blog and discussion is nothing but an open discussion board like this one...Google does not use it to release corporate plans, policy, or practices.

@ sooner . . I appreciate your feedback . . you stated and I quote : "Google will never, ever discusses how they determine search rankings, and any information that claims to be from Google and discusses search rankings is wrong, misguided, or untrue" . . . . end quote . . I know you meant to say discuss . . . .

• That is absolutely not true . . . and you may be interested to note also that webmasters and tech bloggers reveal more about google search engine rankings than you may imagine . . . .

@ Frank . . thank you for your comment . . . .

• I believe less than 50 most important and relevant tags / keywords would be the optimal number . . . this site has given us a field capacity of 500 tags for years and for many of us we usually maxed it out . . . but I have learned through my experience on this site and my research on google and other sites that it is completely unnecessary . . So yes . I've actually been working on my tags . . changing them . reordering them . . minimizing them while simultaneously working to maximize them . .

. . . I have long ago discovered the titles and descriptions in the body text attached to our images are a key element to our google search engine results . .
As for here on FAA . . . as I stated above in my original message I believe not all tags on this site are "active" . .
Someone controls which are active and which are not .
We could add hundreds of relevant tags and they won't necessarily help us rise to the top of the search results on this site . .
When I conduct random searches on this site . sometimes logged in and sometimes not . . I find the search results to be completely unpredictable and often totally unrelated to what I am looking for . . which almost always excludes my own work as well . . . so whether or not the search is manipulated to benefit a few members and exclude the rest is a mystery . . I would really like to know . .

And it isn't about the tag word itself . . it is about the member . . . is there favouritism on this site . yes . . is it based on the number of sales of that image . . clearly not . . and that is clearly evident in the search results . .

So yes . it appears it is personal . . . and who decides which images appear in the search results on FAA . not only that but how is it determined . .

Some may think we don't have a need to know . . and if that is the case . . then . . . whatever . . .

FAA is my primary storefront . . .
All I really need to know is how to improve my ranking in tag / keyword search results on google . . for that is primarily where I want my work to appear at the top of the list . . .

How Google Search Works

"Learn how Google discovers, crawls, and serves web pages
When you sit down at your computer and do a Google search, you're almost instantly presented with a list of results from all over the web. How does Google find web pages matching your query, and determine the order of search results?

In the simplest terms, you could think of searching the web as looking in a very large book with an impressive index telling you exactly where everything is located. When you perform a Google search, our programs check our index to determine the most relevant search results to be returned ("served") to you.

The three key processes in delivering search results to you are:

Crawling: Does Google know about your site? Can we find it?
Indexing: Can Google index your site?
Serving: Does the site have good and useful content that is relevant to the user's search?"

@Sharon, if you want to believe that Google gives any information that is critical to their operations, algorithms, or company secrets on a discussion, go ahead. I have been a developer using Google products since before mapping and when site search was in its beta, and I have found and verified that all they give on their information sites is just helpful hints not earth shattering revelations on how they do business.

Sharon -- I used to be concerned about being at the top of search, but now I'm more focused on what is called on-site conversion. In fact here is my thread on it: http://pixels.com/showmessages.php?messageid=1917725

Sooner -- talk to me about what you said "Backlinks from websites like FAA used to give some benefit in the past, but now they have little or no positive affect. It's all about the content, your content, and original content no shortcuts allowed" If I understand you right, I can't figure out why I'm usually on the AW board: http://pixels.com/graphsartistwebsites.html

I don't promote my artistwebsites other than a few links at the bottom of my Wordpress, as well as the same on my about.me page. I primarily engage my AW with my email campaign list a couple times per month. Otherwise I mostly promote my Pixels gallery page.

With regards to tagging, I've been use to this from Flickr which I've been on much longer than FAA, and both sites are similar. Once I started using the popular tags from Flickr on FAA my visits started to take off. Flickr has an audience far larger than FAA, and I'd even suggest it is the YouTube for photography and art enthusiast.

Aloha Frank . . . why do you primarily promote your pixels domain ?

Sharon -- "why do you primarily promote your pixels domain ? "

Because Pixels is going to be the main site, and is a more universal name. My pixels URL is shorter and more memorable than my AW one.

Mostly though, Pixels / FAA is like the iTunes or Amazon for art and photography. I am exclusively on Pixels / FAA and it is a name that people (buyers) trust. Part of selling is developing trust, and my AW then is only for those who subscribe to my email campaign and know who I am. The Pixels website images are much larger, and gets my stuff in front of buyers. Some artists are afraid that doing this will lead buyers away from their art, but I believe if a buyer does that and buys then they are trusting Pixels more and I could get the next sale. Its all about helping each other make it through life ... I've come to believe in the power of community.

I was inspired to do this from Sharon Cummings who seems to make a few sales per day ...... she doesn't use her AW at all.

@Sharon, Sorry you feel that way...I find it very aggravating when people support an issue with sources that have little or no real facts in them. Do you really believe Google releases the intimate details of how their search algorithm functions? Or that people discussing it on an open forum are credible sources? Seems like more than a little speculation to me. However, there is only one indisputable fact and that is if a website puts in the effort and creates good original meaningful content, the website will always be at the top of the search results.

@Frank...back links died as a reliable SEO tool with the link farms and exchanges many years ago,,,while some credible back links might influence the placement in the search results a little, there is no substitute for content.

Oon Ph

@Sharon in your OP the W3C comment on tags, and at no time do they speak about specifics. However, they do repeat the word "may" throughout the quote. The school I went to defined "may" as a shot-in-the-dark that could work so go ahead and try it because it can't hurt. This does not mean Google or any other search engine even bothers with them. I really wish I could understand why you are so resistant to providing content that has value with your images or on your website to increase search visibility?

Sharon Mau

. . good morning . . . . .

@frank . . it is one of the things among many I have noticed with AW . . that the images displayed are smaller . more like thumbnails . and when one clicks on an image to view it large they are smaller than they appear here on FAA . . . it would be interesting to know what the actual difference in dimensions are . . I like how our bio is at the top of our homepage instead of on the left as a sidebar . . I also like the fact that we may somewhat personalise it . . .

pixels.com is a good domain name . . I noted that when Sean launched it with his official announcement . . . I "like" my domain name: sharon-mau.pixels.com
. . but I don't use the domain . .
I already had well established my domain on http://sharon-mau.artistwebsites.com and there is no need to change my business cards as well as all my addresses pointing to it or confuse my customers with a new domain . . .

"pixels.com is a clone of FineArtAmerica.com" . . . yes . . virtually identical except for the domain name the URL address and the logo . . . .
Sean states: "The only difference is that you can sell iPhone cases on Pixels.com, and you can't sell them on FAA."

We can however sell them on our artistwebsites.com . . .
So no need to use my pixels.com address . . .
They are all connected . .

along with
fineartgermany.com / fineartaustralia.com / fineartnorthamerica.com / fineartengland.com / finearteurope.com / fineartinternational.com /
. . all exactly the same as fineartamerica.com . only a different name and logo in order to target an international market . .

When I use fineartinternational.com it is primarily to promote groups as well as my own personal profile . . it really only is about the word "america" . . that doesn't make me unpatriotic . . It is purely aesthetic in an attempt to appeal to my international social and professional network . .

Group features are not displayed beneath our image on artistwebsites.com to distract our visitors . .
Plus we "may" choose to disable to comments on artistwebsites.com to retain our customers on our page . . . .

Pixels.com and FineArtAmerica.com are perfectly synchronized and the pixels.com format appears exactly the same as FAA . .
FineArtAmerica.com is the mother ship so to speak . . our primary and all our other domains mirror it . . . .
So I prefer to use artistwebsites.com . . it is what I promote as a link for my website on all my other domains as well as printed on my business card . . .

Honestly . . I've never seen a website with so many different domain names . . . . . . it is truly unreal . . . even so . .

Sean (our owner here on FAA) tells us . . "Pixels.com was purchased and launched in 2013. Pixels.com is going to become the parent website that sits above all the other websites. As we introduce new products (e.g. iPhone cases, calendars, puzzles, etc.), each new product will appear on Pixels.com" . . . That interests me so I "may" make the migration as far as choosing which domain to print on business cards and promote on my other websites . . .

. . . the word "may" is an open-ended word with no liability for the author of the content for it is speculative and it isn't declarative or definitive . . .
. . the dictionary states:

• the word "may"
auxiliary verb, present singular 1st person may, 2nd may or ( Archaic ) may·est or mayst, 3rd may; present plural may; past might.
1) (used to express possibility): It may rain.
2)(used to express opportunity or permission): You may enter.
3) (used to express contingency, especially in clauses indicating condition, concession, purpose, result, etc.): I may be wrong but I think you would be wise to go. Times may change but human nature stays the same.
4) (used to express wish or prayer): May you live to an old age.
5) Archaic. (used to express ability or power.)
6) "may" is a verb - a choice to act or not, or a promise of a possibility, as distinguished from "shall" which makes it imperative.
7) in statutes, and sometimes in contracts, the word "may" must be read in context to determine if it means an act is optional or mandatory, for it may be an imperative

• the word "definitive"
. . from the root word "define" . . . . .
adjective . . de·fin·i·tive [dih-fin-i-tiv]
Origin:
1350–1400; Middle English < Old French < Latin dēfīnītīvus, equivalent to dēfīnīt ( us ) (see definite) + -īvus -ive

Related forms
de·fin·i·tive·ly, adverb
de·fin·i·tive·ness, noun
non·de·fin·i·tive, adjective
non·de·fin·i·tive·ly, adverb
non·de·fin·i·tive·ness, noun

1) most reliable or complete, as of a text, author, criticism, study, or the like.
2) serving to define, fix, or specify definitely: to clarify with a definitive statement.
3) having its fixed and final form; providing a solution or final answer; satisfying all criteria.

As I mentioned in my quote above Matt Cutts states on the Official Google Webmaster Central Blog:
http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/2009/09/google-does-not-use-keywords-meta-tag.html
"Our web search (the well-known search at Google.com that hundreds of millions of people use each day) disregards keyword metatags completely. They simply don't have any effect in our search ranking at present." end quote

. . He didn't say "their" . . he said "Our web search (the well-known search at Google.com " . implying he is associated with google . . and making an authoritative statement . . . and the word "may" is not included in that statement . . which leaves no room for speculation . . . .

. . So . . as of yet I have received no definitive answer on my inquiry about tags and that is the primary reason for posting this forum . so if you have any friendly constructive professional advice on "boosting" or optimizing our tags I would love to hear your thoughts on this . . . .

Wishing everyone a peaceful and productive day . . . .

Sharon -- your artistwebsites domain printed on your business cards can be a concern, but I understand that (feature) will never change. Personally, on my business cards I have my http://about.me/FrankJCasella domain which has all of my online real estate. I can then make changes online by who or where I link my audience to. However, again, the pixels URL is shorter and more memorable in the event I or any of us have to give it out verbally ( like over the phone ).

I don't have any further feedback on boosting tags other than what I said that its commonly known that titles and descriptions are read by Google. We have to remember that the other search engines don't raise the bar as much as Google and they are used at least 30% as much as Google, as referenced in the link I provided earlier ( http://pixels.com/showmessages.php?messageid=1917725 ).

So on FAA we have to include: artist's name, title, medium, main search keywords (landscape, portrait, etc) ... that's a minimum of 4 and you've not done one keyword about your subject.

You add a couple general words about the image like subject or location, And then there are the perhaps less saturated unique keywords that you hope someone might search on.

What's the priority of these keywords? Even though your name might be the most unique keyword of your art, is it the most likely search word for art like yours. As long as it's in the list of ten, shouldn't it be last?

Because you need to sponsor main index keywords terms like painting or photography have to be included but again should they be first? Also, do any of you sponsor keywords links on the other FAA sites besides pixels?
Thanks.

. . Frank . . . you're right about that . . I noticed long ago that our titles and descriptions appear in google search results . . . images can be buried in an avalanche of results on a tag for "flowers" etc . . . . the entire body of text in our description are tags . . google reads them as well as our titles . . . still wondeing about the "nofollow" and researching that as well . . .

Wikipedia states: "nofollow is a value that can be assigned to the rel attribute of an HTML a element to instruct some search engines that a hyperlink should not influence the link target's ranking in the search engine's index. It is intended to reduce the effectiveness of certain types of internet advertising because their search algorithm depends heavily on the number of links to a website when determining which websites should be listed in what order in their search results for any given term. However, new information suggests that search engines will depend less on links in the future and more on other aspects such as mentions that don't include links.

The nofollow value was originally suggested to stop comment spam in blogs. Believing that comment spam affected the entire blogging community, in early 2005 Google's Matt Cutts and Blogger's Jason Shellen proposed the value to address the problem.

The specification for nofollow is copyrighted 2005–07 by the authors and subject to a royalty free patent policy, e.g. per the W3C Patent Policy 20040205,and IETF RFC 3667 & RFC 3668. The authors intend to submit this specification to a standards body with a liberal copyright/licensing policy such as the GMPG, IETF, and/or W3C."

• note the mention on wikipedia of Matt Cutts . . the man's name in my quote above on the Official Google Webmaster Central Blog:about tags . . !
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nofollow

Mary,

There is a drop down box adjacent to the search field which distinguishes the following:

Title
Artist
Title+Artist
Keyword+Artist

It appears to me that title and artist are already pre-programmed, thus alleviating any necessity to include them as tags. The information (I surmise) is pulled for indexing at the time of upload, based on the artists' supplied information for those fields.

This is an interesting read on
Meta tags that Google understands
https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/79812?hl=en&ref_topic=4617741

The Title of the Page While technically not a meta tag, this tag is often used together with the "description". The contents of this tag are generally shown as the title in search results (and of course in the user's browser). https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/35624?rd=1
"Create descriptive page titles
Titles are critical to giving users a quick insight into the content of a result and why it’s relevant to their query. It's often the primary piece of information used to decide which result to click on, so it's important to use high-quality titles on your web pages. Here are a few tips for managing your titles: https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/35624?rd=1#3

. . . after studying this a bit (and I will research it more) it seems the best concentration of my efforts to maximize my meta tags would be to further focus and develop my own personal website http://www.sharonmau.com
. where I may build my own personal meta data and html code and utilize my primary storefront, which is my portfolio here, with most of my images (as they are now) linked to FAA as my platform for order fulfillment service . . . what do you think?

Mary Ellen Anderson

Jeffrey,
I know it use to be that if you didn't include your own name as a keyword than FAA search wouldn't find it if someone searched on it. Maybe this changed when plurals started being recognized. Has there been an official announcement from FAA on how the keywording has changed? Has anyone actually tested our assumptions?

Between google changes, FAA's new changes, page sponsoring, etc than I'm yet to get everything changed before someone rips it all up again. sigh

#SEO #RankBrain

26 January 2016 What Just Changed In Google's #Core #Ranking #Algorithm - by Jayson DeMers who "founded #AudienceBloom in April 2010 is a columnist for #SearchEngineJournal #SearchEngineWatch and #HuffingtonPost . His personal blog is located at AudienceBloom.com/blog

quote "Google GOOGL -4.10% is no stranger to #searchvolatility . Its search algorithm changes almost constantly, ranging from minor data refreshes and manual fine-tunings, to entire new algorithm branches that function independently from Google’s core algorithm. When news breaks about a potential “core” algorithm change, it’s usually more significant than a modification to one of its branches - after all, this is the foundation for the biggest #searchengine on the planet."

5 Upcoming Technologies That Will Change The World Of Content Marketing
"Self-Updating Algorithms . . Google RankBrain as the future of search algorithm updates . . now it seems the manual human updates that once dictated our lives are gone for good . . instead, machine learning algorithms like RankBrain will serve to make gradual, iterative improvements on pre-existing systems, fine-tuning search results without warning or documentation. On the surface, this isn’t a big deal, and the changes we’re likely to see early on will be imperceptible to all but the most #attuned #searchmarketers . . but its introduction means we’re entering an age of #machinelearningalgorithms which means it will be harder and harder to find a formula that works for #organicsearchvisibility ."

"If you prepare for these upcoming technologies in your own content marketing campaign, you’ll be well ahead of the competition as they develop in 2016 and beyond. As usual, I expect the most successful content marketers will be the ones who adopt the latest technologies early and in an innovative way. Even if your execution isn’t perfect, or if the technology develops in a different direction, you’ll get the early competitive points for differentiating yourself. Keep your users in mind with your new tactics, don’t be afraid to take risks, and make adjustments as needed as you continue down your new path; with these fundamentals at the core of your strategy, you can’t lose." by Jayson DeMers read more here : http://goo.gl/E5dR73

Overwhelming amount of information Sharon. Thank you! I had to save the discussion page in my favorites just to start reading #reading @reading :)
I just wanted to contribute about #GoogleContributor that allows to see less ads. In order not to see ads at all, neither on my irinasztukowski@yahoo.com nor my #YouTube (and I even don't know is #Twitter is pushing any ads on the viewers) I added an #AdBlock to my #GoogleChrome and I love it.
I've heard that YouTube actually offers an option to their #ContentCreator (s) with some kind of #AdBlock for $9.99 a month; which is super great. But you can achieve the same result with #Google #AdBlock.

I also think that #SEO is great tool to use; but on #FAA we cannot add any #metatag (s) , can we. So we, basically can promote our #FineArtAmerica or #Pixels websites through other venues.

My thought are: besides the own #domain (e.g. I have one that directly connected to http://irina-sztukowski.pixels.com/index.html , and it is short and easy to remember http://www.artirina.com/ it costs me around $12 per year) ..

I also believe that blogging is the great way for #SEO . Lots of written on it.
Here are a few articles that worth reading:
9 Reasons Why Blogging Is Essential To Good SEO Results
http://www.business2community.com/seo/9-reasons-blogging-essential-good-seo-results-0866944#Xd7Pr3aq6a7QlKRu.97

and another one:
SEO for Idiots: The 10 Basics of Blogging Search Engine Optimization
http://www.blogtyrant.com/beginner-blogging-seo/

Needless to say, blogging takes time, devotion, and discipline. But, personally, I love it. It allows me to keep my subscribers/ viewers in the loop of my art business. And, of course, it helps potential customers to find me.

I want to thank you again for such extensive research on #SEO #GoogleSearch #Google in general and providing all the links to the articles.

To All #Contributor (s) Have a great productive day!

Following but totally overwhelmed.

I understand SEO a little bit but am not sure what we can really do on FAA/Pixels other than fill in the description and tags spots when we upload images. I have tags and metadata embedded in the images by Adobe Bridge. Will be switching to Lightroom soon but it's the same idea. I don't fill out the description spot in the metadata. I suppose that is something I should do.

I have a domain name AllenPhotoArt.com that points to my AW. Is there anything I should do or can do with that site? Nobody really sees it as it just lands them on my AW.

Does the blog on our AW really count as a blog in Google's eyes or do I need a separate stand-alone WP? Is there a way to have a blog on my AllenPhotoArt domain or do I have to buy another domain just for that. I not that great at writing and the idea of having to update a blog every week is not appealing.

On another note: does using #hashtags on here mean anything? Where does one use or not use hashtags? I've heard that people are starting to get turned off by them.

Aloha . . the primary reason I include the hashtags here on my forum blog is to post the words as keywords + tags = subjects for those who are following this discussion to know what to research . . on twitter or google etc. . in reference to the #content . . For example if you follow me on twitter or google plus you may click on my hashtag to see similar posting on the same subject . . It will open your eyes to a whole new world . there are many professionals throughout the world who have an interest in SEO for many reasons . .

. this blog is chock full of useful information . .
If it interests you to follow the thread and post a comment thank you so much for posting a reply . .
Stats show this forum has been read many thousands of times and is a popular subject yet touching the page reveals who you are includes you in the discussion and lets me know you are here . .
. So thank you for your kind attention . . I appreciate your feedback . .

Any specific questions I will try and address yet much of what you wish to know is already here . .
It's important to always remember not to get too serious about the subjects . . . .
And to have fun in exploring the concepts . . .

Applying what we learn is one thing . .
Sharing information is another . .

SEO is a fascinating subject . one which is always evolving developing transforming and changing being defined and redefined . . . .
I research extensively and share what I've learned here to benefit everyone . . .

Using hashtags is primarily for google+ and twitter = #socialmediamarketing . . . to help connect my content to others who share similar interests . . . .
I use them to apply emphasis to a word . . . the hashtags are visible in google search results . .
It's fun and interesting as long as you don't overdo it . .
I also provide the @ so if you have an interest you may follow them on twitter as well . .

On our own personal domain the actual words without the hashtags are useful for SEO purposes embedded within the meta keywords you choose to include on your site . .

When you are researching on google sign in first . .
Google analytics and Google URL Shortener are especially useful tools and helpful when you post links on social networks with a permanent record on our google account in helping to record the research to shorten the URL to conform with a limited number of factors allowed such as on twitter and to visualise and track where your target audience is originating from as well . .

Even google's URL for the site is #ubercool
https://goo.gl/

More interests are included here . . such as the word origin of the name @Google . . and definition . . something many of us did not know before
because perhaps we never thought of the name / word with having different spellings and googling it :)))

such as keywords = what+is+google https://goo.gl/7cItIa

A googol is the large number 10100. In decimal notation, it is written as the digit 1 followed by one hundred 0s:

10000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000.
The term was coined in 1920 by 9-year-old Milton Sirotta (1911–1981), nephew of American mathematician Edward Kasner. Kasner popularized the concept in his 1940 book Mathematics and the Imagination. Other names for googol include ten duotrigintillion on the short scale, ten thousand sexdecillion on the long scale, or ten sexdecilliard on the Peletier long scale.

A googol has no special significance in mathematics. However, it is useful when comparing with other very large quantities such as the number of subatomic particles in the visible universe or the number of hypothetical possibilities in a chess game. Kasner used it to illustrate the difference between an unimaginably large number and infinity . . . To give a sense of how big a googol really is, the mass of an electron, just under 10−30 kg, can be compared to the mass of the visible universe, estimated at between 1050 and 1060 kg. . . It is a ratio in the order of about 1080 to 1090, still much smaller than the value of a googol.

Widespread sounding of the word occurs through the name of the company Google, with the name "Google" being an accidental misspelling of "googol" by the company's founders, which was picked to signify that the search engine was intended to provide large quantities of information.

Since October 2009 Google has been assigning domain names to its servers under the domain " 1e100.net ", the scientific notation for #1Googol in order to provide a single domain to identify servers across the Google network :: . . Information Source @Wikipedia

. now . . the domain 1e100 dot net . . that is cool . . although it isn't a live link so . . let's move on . .

The most interesting thing I've located today on SEO is this : : : I found the source of that information:

Google doppelgänger casts riddle over interwebs

Why is Google routing the world through 'Googol'?

quote
" . . the domain is obviously Google's, chosen with a mathematician's wink at the search giant's famously misspelled name. This mystery domain is 1e100.net. "1e100" would be scientific notation for 10 100, a one followed by 100 zeros, also known as a googol.

As pointed out by Sebastian Stadil, founder of the Silicon Valley Cloud Computing Group, 1e100.net translates to "Google Network" - the ever-growing Google private infrastructure that spans nearly forty custom-built data centers worldwide. According to a recent company presentation, Google intends to expand this private interweb to between one million and 10 million servers, spanning “100s to 1000s” of global locations.

In a post to Slashdot, Google's Chris DiBona says that 1e100.net was launched to provide a single domain to identify servers across the Google network rather than doing so on separate domains. "Starting in October 2009, we started using a single domain name to identify our servers across all Google products, rather than use different product domains such as youtube.com, blogger.com, and google.com," he writes.

"We did this for two reasons: first, to keep things simpler, and second, to proactively improve security by protecting against potential threats such as cross-site scripting attacks. Most typical Internet users will never see 1e100.net, but we picked we picked a Googley name for it just in case." " end quote from @TheRegister read more here : http://goo.gl/7sVTOi

In your Google Analytics dashboard . . you can . .

"Target profitable geographic areas.
You can use the Location report to identify regions and cities with higher than average performance metrics.
You can then target campaigns to these areas.

Navigate to Audience > Geo > Location.

Use Segments to apply the Search Traffic Default Segment.

Click the map to drill down to a relevant country/territory,. .

Alternatively, use the advanced filter in the table to exclude local areas and keep an international view.

In the table, change the primary dimension to either Region (e.g., state) or City.

You can now compare how regions/cities compare with respect to each metric in the table.

To identify high and low converting locations, choose a Goal Set or Ecommerce under the Explorer tab."

In your Google Analytics dashboard under Admin > Social Settings

you can . . .

quote

"Identify your properties for which you want social-activity data.

As social activity becomes a larger and larger component of how products, services, and content gain visibility and viability, you want to incorporate that data into your analysis.

Use this page to identify properties of yours that may not include Analytics tracking code, like your YouTube channel, so you can see the related social-activity data in your Data Hub Activity report. When you identify properties with this setting, then any time someone on a social site includes a link that includes the URL structure you add here, you see that in your activity stream.

This setting acts as an Include filter, so any property that you don’t include in this list is likewise not included in your report.

With that in mind, remember to also include your primary property.

For example, if you add www. twitter dot com / example (your twitter network), [and/or your google+] . . . also include your primary domain www.example.com . .

Important note: by entering one or more prefixes (eg. www.youtube.com/user/myuser) you will only get social activities against those domains. So if you wish to continue seeing social activities for your primary domain please add that as well (eg. example.com)."

end quote

Social Content URL Prefix

You can set it up to point to your primary POD as well as your social networks . . .

I'd love to know if anyone has jumped on the AMP bandwagon.

It's Google's new formatting just for mobile pages, and if you use it you're supposed to get priority in the mobile search engine rankings.

I installed this plugin:

https://wordpress.org/plugins/amp/

On my site and now I'm waiting to see if I notice any change in the mobile rankings. Anyone elses feedback would be appreciated :)

. . ★ . . :: #Google #SEO #rankingfactors :: . . ★ . .

Announcement : Links and content are Google's nr. 1 and nr. 2 ranking factors

Announcement : Google uses #CTR and user experience in their #algorithm

Links are still king and will likely remain Google's top ranking signal for many years to come.

Google is consistently adding new ranking signals into the mix.

Google engineer Paul Haahr @haahr reveals some of these new #signals.

1. Google runs A/B tests with the SERP meaning if you drop or go up 1-2 positions it could be a test.

2. Google definitely uses click-through-rate (CTR) data as a #rankingsignal .

For example : if a site ranks nr. 2 in Google -- and almost no one clicks on that result - it probably means the page is irrelevant.

And if they DO click on it but hit their "back" key after 2 seconds - it tells Google that it's a low-quality result.

On the other hand . .

If your page gets an above-average amount of clicks - and people "stick to your page like superglue" - this tells Google that people like your page.

And it is probably going to receive a rankings boost.

Google pays attention to how searchers interact with your site.
A high CTR and time on page may boost your rankings.
