Can Outrage, indignation And Other Negative Emotions Spark Inspirational Creativity?

I most certainly believe that they do, and maybe even more than "Positive Emotions". I often use my art as an outlet to channel such emotions, to communicate them through the art when I can not, or do not want to speak of them. As humans we are very complex beings, we are constantly bombarded by images, events and happenings we have little or no control over, these are the things that impact are emotions, some times on a conscious level some times on an unconscious level. Being aware that we can choose to channel these emotions into something good is the tool that allows the spark of inspirational creativity to take place. What do you think? Do you make a conscious effort to be aware of your negative emotions and actively try to channel them into your art?

The Image I choose is a very resent example of a sculpture I was inspired to create sparked by my emotions of outrage & Indignation.

Here are 3 sculptures that were all inspired by "negative emotions", I am posting them to further bring the point I am trying to make in the opening statement.

I painted sad eyed fish and girls leading up to my divorce and angry sharks during the process of dealing with my lawyer. I'm finally back to painting happy pics once again.

Negative emotions - outrage, sadness, etc. - can inspire me, but I work best after they've subsided a bit.

Well it certainly can and does. Although I do not usually paint from anger but often a response. Response to opinions and some times critiques. I painted this after my wife remarked that I did not paint hands well. I can I just mostly didn't, but this made her see I can.

Of course it has impact on our work. My good friend lives in Kiev, my boyfriends family member was on MH17 flight. So, in simple words- a total mess. I noticed lately my images are mainly dark, even if I try to make nice white image, it doesn't work. But even in this dark period, I try to find some nice things to show, dark is not ugly.

Ann, I just saw your sharks and I think that if those sharks would have been made with happy face's in stead of angry emotions you channeled into the painting it would not have been as good as it is. Unfortunately we don't live in a constant state of happiness in this world, reality can be very harsh and for me creating art is relating that reality and in order to do that with some degree of realism and believability, the negative emotions can not be suppressed.

John, yes the emotions need to be channeled, not just a knee jerk reaction to something, so waiting for the emotion to subside at bit as you say fits right into the process.

@Kevin, but it must have sparked maybe a little anger bit of anger, or other emotion, because you did set out on a deliberate mission even if not monumental to prove her wrong.

Guna, I am very sorry to hear that about your boyfriends family, that was a horrendous act of evil that occurred with that airliner. I can certainly understand that the prevailing emotion is sadness and that creating white is not possible even if you try. I do think that we must go beyond viewing things as just Black or White, and that's were I think that the conscious effort to channel our emotions comes in, I think there has to be the conscious effort not just that we are carried by the prevailing emotion at the moment to create sad or black when we are sad or white and happy when we are happy, but that we become aware of it and explore it further to try and understand our emotion using logic and maybe coming to a conclusion or asking a question or making a statement.

Mario, not anger but more like an I will show you type attitude. I have often answered critics by painting my response, but (my) anger doesn't generally enter into it. I do know it has in some famous works in history.

When I am numb and in a depressed state I paint my best. However, its the best therapy for me.

Yes.. I've always been fascinated with the ironic notion of creation through destruction..destroying a piece of stone to create a beautiful sculpture.. or burning metal until it melts and then creating a beautiful sculpture..
Taking great lumps out of big rocks with a hammer and chisel is the best way for me to channel this energy. However, the negative energy used to rough out my stone work rarely shows in the finished pieces. By the time I get to the fine detail stages I have calmed so much that the finished work is always very positive! Different story with sketches and paintings.. the anger etc usually shows in those.

Art MUST always be an outlet for these feelings..what else can we do with them?. It's a damaged person or a damaged society that cannot or will not express these emotions..and what better and safer way of doing it than art!

Attention: Moderator.

This thread contains highly offensive images. Please make this discussion PRIVATE.

EDIT@4PM:

I made no demand that this thread be shut down, only that it be made private for this very good reason: It's premise is an endorsement of anti-semitism.

To wit: The word STOP hovering over the Star of David, juxtaposed with the stick-figured representations of an Israeli soldier and an Arab mother and child lying prostrate on the ground after having been gunned down in cold blood by the Israeli soldier smacks of Hitler's Nazi brand of anti-semitism.

If blame for the daily atrocities in Gaza AND Israel must be attached, it should be to both sides of the conflict with impartiality; not to one, nor to the other, exclusively.

With this image, Mario brought his Leftist agenda to the table, disguised as an argument about how negative emotions can spark an artist's creativity, but he didn't have to make a political statement in order to illustrate his point.

Agree with Mr Pierson.

Images removed. Don't want to promote this by contributing .

The issues handled by these images are all very public... so why make the discussion private?.. I don't find anything here offensive. I would describe them more as 'informative".

Edit: that's a shame Vivian..those were some great examples!

This is a discussion about the question the opening the opening statement asks, it's not to discuss the images that were included as an example of how I channel my emotions into ART. If any of these images offend you it's nothing more than a rush to judgement and not understanding the art. Now back to the discussion which I think was going quite well while we were all on topic.

Quite honestly I think it's impossible to have any meaningful discussion about art if we can not confront what we are all so exposed to in everyday life, yet we are forcing ourselves to view our own reality through someone else's eyes and agenda.

@Patrick, boy are you off base, to begin with you might need glasses, as there is no mother and child laying prostrate any where in my image, it's a child with school books, you don't know who is the Jew, Arab or Puerto Rican in this sculpture, you don't know what the artist meant by Stop, I don't think you even know the origins of the symbol you choose to call the Star of David means or it's origin. You make a whole lot of incorrect assumptions when you describe my art. Further call me a leftist is a clear violation of Faa rules, but I'm not thin skinned and can take your labeling and name calling, but I will never apologize for my art especially when it is misunderstood!

Mario..you're Art is your emotion, you say, and so, what is your emotion/outrage? For your OP ART ? It's your example for the thread! Of course you want your Art discussed. You always do.
So, what you post will be discussed in context!

Edit to your edit-not

Your image is every day life, yes, and political....a no-no. Freedom of speech/expression is good. That is your agenda.

This is a business...the agenda doesn't include your agenda....but you already know that, only too well,Mario.

"This is a discussion about the question the opening the opening [sic] statement asks, it's not to discuss the images that were included as an example of how I channel my emotions into ART."

Then, we should not have included the images.
