Help! Program Installed Itself On My Computer

After turning on my computer a few minutes ago, I got a brief message saying not to turn the computer off during the installation. It said it was a windows update. I have my computer set to only install a windows update with a response from me. It installed quickly , so I couldn't stop it. After the installation, I went looking for it. I could not find it in my windows update panel. I also looked in the control panel for recently installed programs. Couldn' t find anything there. Is there anywhere else I can look to see where a program might have installed itself??? Should I go back to another date? Anyone know??? I was not signed into the internet and had no browser open.

If you suspect it is a problem, definitely do a system restore as soon as possible. If it was a legit update it will re-update again at some point.

Sue, I'd do a System Restore, immediately followed by a Malwarebytes scan.

You can find the free download of this great, free software here -

Malwarebytes has saved my bacon more than once though the years. It's safe, easy, has a long, successful history, and I run it as part of my weekly PC maintenance.

Are you running windows 7? If you are, they had a update here a few weeks ago, and it is making the windows auto update. I have reset mine three times, and it keeps going back to auto. So it was something in their programing.

Hi,

You can check windows update history if do this:

1) Start Menu
2) Control Panel
3) Windows Update (If you have View By in the top right set to Category, then first click 'System and Security' before you can find 'Windows Update')
4) View Update History, on the left side menu.

Yes, I have windows 7. I Went to do a system restore and it was showing a windows update today. Windows update will usually give me 3 or 4 different dates to choose from, but today it is showing only todays date and tells me I can only restore AFTER todays date, making it impossible to get rid of the update. Must be something really important. Thanks everyone for your suggestions.

Wendy .... Thanks for the link.

Try running "msconfig". You can run this by going to Start > Search Programs And Files > and type in "msconfig" (without the quotes) and press Enter.
This will bring up the System Configuration utility for Windows.
Under the General tab, choose "Selective Startup". This will allow you to choose what programs and services load during startup.
Next go to the Services tab and at the bottom, check the box that says "Hide all Microsoft Services". Now you can uncheck any remaining services you aren't sure about.
Next go to the Startup tab and uncheck all items you are unsure about.
Once you click OK, allow the system to reboot.

If you find you turned something off that you wanted, just rerun the "msconfig" utility and re-enable that service or program.
It's a hidden feature in Windows that can be quite helpful to stop unwanted programs and services from loading. It is available in almost every version of windows and has been around for many, many years.

I use this all the time to remove unwanted services and programs that install themselves without my knowledge. I also use it to get my system running faster again when too many programs and services have bogged down my computer.
If you ever get one of those viruses that takes over your computer as soon as it boots up and doesn't allow you to load any programs, this is often the only way to stop it from loading. You will need to get into this utility as soon as the systems load before the virus has a chance to start up and keep you from opening any else.

Sue I'd try Shanes suggestion. Then if the system restore is not letting you back up to a later date I would run the Microsoft malware removal tool . It's free on Microsoft.com Sometimes it is possible to do a system restore from the boot menu by pressing an f key...it might give you an option when you first turn the computer on...safe mode can work before anything loads...you might be able to do the restore from there and back up to a date before the virus loaded.
