How Are The Home Page Collections Assembled?

I rarely try to use the site as a buyer would, but I thought I would look for art for kids' rooms to see how it goes. I went to the Home Page, Collections menu, and selected Children's Rooms. Because I wanted to see what was at the end of the search, not the most popular, I went to page 28. Some of the images I saw were obviously NOT suitable for kids' rooms. I clicked on one in particular, to find that among its first 10 keywords were drink, beer and booze. HOW in the world are these collections assembled? What is the criteria that puts a piece in a collection? It is very discouraging to know that this art makes it into the collection, and my art created specifically with children as both the intended audience and the subject does not.

some are keyword spamming. if you see an image/user doing this just report it to Abbie and she'll look into it. (use the contact us form)

Thanks, Heather.

it's not keywords, i checked a few and none of those even had the world children. yet, i could see them all in a childs room, just not a nursery.

That was interesting! Valerie, I looked through those out of curiosity and noticed an inappropriate drawing, also. When I looked at the tags, there was nothing to indicate it was art for a child's room. The only word I could find that came close was "doodle" (it was a drawing). So ... take with that what you will. I wouldn't want to assume that artists are intentionally spamming, if they are merely trying to come up with enough key words.

Mike, just saw your post If it's not key words, then how does a drawing of a man smoking a pipe fit into a child's room?

i dunno. i can only assume they were chosen by someone. i didn't look at all 28 pages, most seem to fit. a few are odd, like fighter planes and a guy in a black and white car. some of those images had only 4 keywords and all of them i think were in italian.

I don't know what the deal is, but it's very disheartening. I mean, how do you even stand a chance to be seen at all when images not even related to your genre are seen first in a dedicated collection?

"how do you even stand a chance to be seen at all"

You get your own buyers. :-)

Seriously, though, we should not be bringing in other people's artwork and judging here. It's not polite and can be construed as a form of 'naming/shaming.'

Valerie Reeves

Please see my original question. This is not in any way a name/shame instance. The art I used as an example Is perfectly fine and I did not disparage it in any way. I just don't understand how it got into the Children's Room collection. I would like to know how the collections are assembled. Based on some of the images in them, It can't be keywords, so what is it?

With all due respect, what does calling attention to images in a collection that are not appropriate for a certain collection have to do with "naming/shaming"? I didn't see anyone mention anyone else's name, just artists in general.

EDIT: Valerie, we must have been typing it at the same time. :-)

I would ask the same question if I looked at the Baseball Players collection and found antique cars in there (although it wouldn't be quite so offensive and inappropriate as the example I found). Especially if the car images had NO keywords referring to baseball. How did they get there? What is the criteria for inclusion?

EDIT: lol, Carolyn. Great minds, of course. ; )

Now, if you simply would have said something to the effect of "How Are The Home Page Collections Assembled?", sure, that's appropriate. But, when you narrow down to specifics as you did, that's a different story.

My apologies, Jeffrey. I guess when I saw those specific alcohol-related terms associated with Children's Room art, I got a little upset. So, can we get back to my original question?

Heather Applegate

There are a lot of images of wine glasses and booze, just as Valerie said. This isn't name and shame, this is a genuine question of how images like this can end up in that collection - it just makes the site look disorganized.

Jeffrey Campbell

Report them.

Heather Applegate

Obviously they ended up there accidentally - and as with most websites, sometimes these sorts of things need to be brought to the attention of webmasters just as any other sort of typos.

Valerie Reeves

Will gladly report them. What is the protocol for doing so?

Heather Applegate

Thank you for agreeing now and repeating my initial suggestion Jeffery.

Valerie - just as with keyword spamming - use the Contact us form - technical assistance. It will go to Abbie and she'll pass it on.

Valerie Reeves

Thanks, Heather.

So, to follow up on my question, am I to assume then that keywords ARE the method by which collections are formed and these all got through inadvertently?

Jeffrey Campbell

Valerie,

You can report to Tech Support. Be sure to select them from the Contact Us tab.

http://fineartamerica.com/contactus.html

I have no idea how they are selected.

Abbie has said in the past that collections were made up of people that had a lot of that one subject, and were proven sellers of that subject area.... or something along those lines.

Valerie Reeves

Interesting. Even if some images by a certain artist fit into any given category, that would not mean that all that artist's work does. Yet that is exactly what seems to be happening here. To use the other, less incendiary, example--if some of my images are baseball players and they sell well, why should all my antique car images be included in the Baseball Player collection? It makes no sense.

We only see 10 tags now and some of the others may be spam-ish

and no on can see it at a glance now. Not that I was a fan of 50

thousand tags showing but you could at least see why something

lands where it should not be landing.

Jeffrey Campbell

Valerie,

I do know there are major changes coming to the website, perhaps your baseball example (and others) will be addressed. All we can do is wait to see what is revealed.

Heather Applegate

I think it's just an oversight/glitch/whatever... Best advice is to report it now that its been noticed and move on.

Jeffrey Campbell

Andee,

The tag(s) option to 'show all' was implemented again late last night.

Hi Valarie.

To answer this question.

"I don't know what the deal is, but it's very disheartening. I mean, how do you even stand a chance to be seen at all when images not even related to your genre are seen first in a dedicated collection?"

You don't. You don't stand a chance of showing up higher until you sell. How many.. don't know, FAA won't say. But until you have sell at least some number of prints beyond 1 to show up anywhere in a search or collection. If someone is searching for "Grapes" and you had great keywords, and grapes in them, with other related keywords, but have not sold... forget about it. Won't happen.

Jeff
Sean said he was going to shorten the number of tags at some point..I wish we

knew now so we could stop adding the fluff (even if it does fit) now and omit the

fluff from older stuff so we can have the best tags and do not just have them

stripped from one side or the other....Sigh....There are some tags that even

tho they are not spam will never be searched for and is a waste to add.
