I Need Help Photographing My Paintings For Faa

Hi all. I could use some advice to get a better photo of my paintings. I can't quite afford professional help, at the moment so I was wondering if there was any advice you could give on getting the best photo out of my Nikon. It's a decent camera, but I'm no photographer. My paintings are medium to large, the largest being 48x48 inches, but most are around 30x40 inches. I use a lot of black in my backdrops so my photos require some editing no matter what I do. It always seems to shrink the image size considerably. The image here is a good example of my issue. Lots of black but my image size can only be reproduced on a small scale with the photos I have.

Appreciate your thoughts :)

Stephanie,

Hopefully this will assist in getting better photos of your work.

Your images do not have enough pixels. Is your camera set to the highest size and quality?

If you have a close up or macro setting on the camera, that will help along with photographing outside.

I use a inexpensive epson scanner ($200) and stitching software to digitize my paintings. There are situations where photography is required or works better, but in general scans are much much better.

photo lights on either side of your painting. camera on a tripod. check/change white balance settings on the camera until you get it right. set camera to maximum size image.

Phyllis, the first time I have ever seen anyone suggest a "macro" setting for photographing artwork...Works for you...Your images look great..Do you use any special setting ?
