What Is A 'body Of Work'?

I've been researching this topic and have found that it is suggested for an emerging artist to have one. In my research I was trying to see what a body of work is. So far I am confused as there are many definitions; same size, same subject, same colors, same patterns. So can someone who actually knows what this broadly used phrase means and tell me what it is so I can get started? Thank you for any input.

Hi Melissa I have a thread running that actually addresses this topic and there is a really good article link in one of my post that really goes in depth on this subject, here is the link to the thread: http://fineartamerica.com/showmessages.php?messageid=1984382

a body of work IMO is an amount...and your work should show conisistency in the items you enumerated.
