Hi All,
I'm looking for artists to participate in my dissertation study, below you'll find the flyer with all of the information needed to participate.
RESEARCH STUDY ON PSYCHOLOGY AND ART
CALL FOR PARTICIPATION!
Are you an amateur or professional artist who works in the medium of painting? Are you between 18 and 65? Would you like to help us learn more about how psychologists look at art? Please take part in an anonymous study!
When psychologists look at art, do they judge whether an artist is mentally ill based just on his or her paintings? If so, how do they make those judgments? When they do this, are some psychologists more accurate than others?
My name is Ashley Mowrey, M.A. I am a doctoral candidate in the Clinical Forensic Psychology program at Alliant International University, California School of Forensic Studies in San Francisco. I am studying whether there are characteristics of art, specifically in paintings, that lead psychologists to make judgments about the artist’s mental health. I will look at whether psychologists with different backgrounds make different judgments about the same artworks. I will also look at what aesthetic characteristics of art psychologists use to make those judgments.
I am asking for participation from any self-identified artists who produce paintings. The type of paint used makes no difference. You must be between 18 and 65 and able to understand written English. When you go to the website, you’ll be asked to read an Informed Consent form with more information about the study and your participation. If you agree, you’ll click Yes. You’ll then be asked one anonymous question about your mental health. Next, you’ll be asked to upload an electronic image of your artwork. There is no compensation for participating. No one should pressure you into participating. Participation should take around 10 to 20 minutes.
If you want to participate, please go to https://alliant.qualtrics.com/SE/?SID=SV_01TEeQNMXU0AYjb There, you can read and agree to the Informed Consent form and get started. If you have any questions, please contact me at amowrey@alliant.edu or 415-663-6214. You may also contact my faculty supervisor, Dr. Joanna Pashdag, at jpashdag@alliant.edu or 415-955-2037. If you If you have any questions or concerns about the conduct of the research, you may contact the Alliant International University San Francisco Institutional Research Board at irb-sf@alliant.edu or 415-955-2151.
Thank you very much!
Ashley Mowrey, M.A.

This looks very interesting and I would love to see the results.... will you be sharing these?
Will a medium image size do or is it meant to be a full size... you may have problems with that
9 Years Ago
Yes, i will be sharing the results. I'm excited to see what they are. The image size doesn't matter, and i haven't heard anything from anyone stating that they're having trouble uploading images. JPEGs tend to be small and work best.

You might want to limit the art further in your control. I'm guessing that you'd want abstracts to surrealism. Recognizable objects carry their own scientific theory I would guess in psychology.

We are a demographic that most of world doesn't seem to take serious. We do not have enough "consumer" years left, plus the ones we have, we do not spend anywhere near the rate as the younger generations. We understand the value of money. lol

Thank you all who can and who have participated. To those of you who aren't within the age range, it in no way denotes assumptions to you being "certifiable" at all - it's an age range that my dissertation chair put in effect in order to prevent the IRB panel from rejecting the proposal.
I appreciate everyone's feedback, thank you!

I participated. I thought it would take much longer since it says 10 - 20 minutes in the OP. It took me less than a minute; thought I did it wrong - so I did it twice! LOL . . . apologies, Ashley :)

Ashley...
What are your thoughts on the above statement?
btw...if that form takes someone 10-20 min to fill out...they may suffer from a Psychotic disorder. ;)
Donna...
lol...on doing it twice. I read it...but I didn't fill out anything...then clicked the blue arrow to see if there was another page and it thanked me for participating!! lol

My thoughts are to not limit the art, i want to expose the psychologists to varying types of paintings, that way it's most similar to what they're going to experience while having multiple clients who each produce their own specific artifacts.
To clarify, the average time taken to fill out the survey is 2 minutes. The 10-20 is to account for some who do not have their images as JPEGS or even a digital version and need time to convert and/or produce a digital version.

Thanks, Ashley.
Are you personally seeing all the uploads of art? If so...do you need (or would you like) more abstracts or realism, etc.?
I will be seeing the uploads, but i will randomly generate which artworks are placed in the survey the psychologists will take. Any style is welcome to be included in the study.

This sounds very interesting!! I am looking forward participating and seeing the results!

i don't see how art can help you diagnose. it is technique. you learn a technique and do the technique. so it is a matter of skill or no skill. some techniques are more open (abstract) some more closed (hyperealism) but the person doing the painting generally uses the techniques they learned from a teacher. so you can't judge a person's mental state by their technique, because it is derived from the person who taught them how to paint.

Kim, I have to disagree. Art is very personal and says a lot about who painted it. Art is often an extension of the artist who created it. I put a piece of myself into every piece I paint, regardless of what technique I am employing at the time. And what if you are self taught? I didn't have a teacher to tell me how to do what I do. Nobody taught me to paint, I just got out some paints one day as a very small child and started painting, been doing it ever since. In fact I didn't even know any other painters when I started, it was instinctive for me. I have, along the way learned many techniques since I started painted, but my artwork is still done in my own style regardless. Technique is a tool, not the art itself. Art comes from the artist, their ideas, life experiences and who they are. Technique is just something that helps artists express themselves in terms others may understand.

Art would be at least as revealing of you as your handwriting is.
Yes, I'm from the physics side of science where truth is fairly conclusive. The 'soft' sciences to me are like trying to determine meaning without a reference frame. But there obviously is a correlation between our mental state and behavior, so can't deny that it's a credible endeavor.
It will be interesting. Looking forward to it.
