Anthropomorphic Art is attributing human form or characteristics to anything other than a human being. It turns out that this is something I just recently started doing without knowing I was doing it. I thought I was just starting to do series work in my sculptures, but in fact it is much more than that. There are artist who actually call themselves anthropomorphic artist, I certainly was unaware of this. It's strange how things some times evolve and take on a direction of their own when you get immersed in your work. Has any thing like this ever happened to you with your art? Share That experience or elaborate further on the subject of anthropomorphic art. This is not meant to be a themed image thread, photos that have to do with the discussion of Anthropomorphic art may be posted to help make your point.

I've got an entire gallery of anthropomorphic marshmallows...

Currently starting to work on the next dozen for the 2015 calendar. I only started it as a joke a few years ago, but people wanted to see more, I made a calendar, then they wanted the following year calendar so I had to make more... over 40 marshmallow scenes later I'm still doing it.

That's what I'm talking about Heather, it took off for you and you started it as a joke. Question what's the shelf live of the originals?
J L , I like Mooncalf.
A few of my sculptures were complimented and called whimsical, I really don't do whimsical, I mean I'll take the compliment, but I really want my ANTs to be more than that, I want then to transmit the realm of all human emotions. Just because they are fun does not mean they can not address serious subjects. Case in point is the sculpture "Stop" not a whimsical subject at all that it's depicting. Here is another that is really meant to be more than whimsical, don't get me wrong I don't have any thing against whimsical. The direction I want my sculptures to take is taking some thing totally fantasy like an Ant and giving it very human emotions and behaviors, even maybe to the point of being thought provoking.

Thank you Vivian, since starting with these ant sculptures I have not once been at a loss on what do I do next, quite the opposite I usually have 2 or 3 different sculptures I want to do and the biggest decision I have to make is selecting which one is next. I find my self running out of oxygen ,Acetylene, copper and brazing rods more than ever. So now that I learned my big word for the day ANT-hropomorphic , I can finally say I do a certain style of sculpture. What a coincidence I now do ants a la Anthropomorphic.

The original's shelf life is quite short - I may use a few several times if they can take the abuse, but some succumb to my stomach.

Nina, mother nature certainly has a creative streak as seen in the images you posted.
@Heather That's art with a dual purpose.
@Geordie, still trying figure out how playing spoons has something to do with Anthropomorphic art? I know I left it kind of open to deviate from the oping statement but that was meant to discuss how your art maybe evolved in a similar way as how I related that I started with my anthropomorphic ant sculptures.

Thank you Carolyn for sharing your image "The Bride", for centuries anthropomorphic art has been a means of depicting symbolism and also religious meaning.
Here is a link to some great 19th century anthropomorphic images archived by the NY public library.

Thanks Barry, my short time away allowed me to work out some inner conflicts regarding my thought on humanity that I think in part I blame the media about., but that's a discussion not allowed here so I won't go into it, but have you seen my most resent sculpture titled "STOP" it might give you a clue to what my mind set was on. Barry your sculpture "A Little Re-Assurance is one of my favorites". The emotion cuts right through the stone!

Mario.. WOW! Stop!.. Powerful, straight to the point..like a bullet between the eyes! ... If your not already a member, I suggest joining Ed Meredith's "art of controversy" group. Your OUTSTANDING "Oil Spill" piece would fit in too! (I've coincidentally spent the last few days making some controversial art of my own! check it out..lol http://fineartamerica.com/featured/joes-car-barry-lamont.html :-)
You picked a great subject for your anthropomorphic art in the ants. I love them!... It works in reverse too.I see lots of ant like behaviour in humans.. If the "inner fish" theorists are anywhere close, then we all evolved through ants..so to speak..
I like to think of existence as a mass consciousness. If indeed we are all one...then the rocks and minerals have there own part to play in shaping human emotions.
Anyway..I'm getting off topic.. and the more I think about it..I'm not even sure if my sculpture qualifies as anthropomorphic?.
"Why God?" and "11th dimension" are my favourites..

At first sight I did not notice the bunny I saw the individual cacti with what I thought were faces with the red flowers until I read the title. It's very interesting Barry, but I would not embrace it, as that could turn out to be quite painful. A social art experiment, now I am intrigued.

Love it Martin!
Patrick I am familiar with your creations, So very unique, one of those styles you can recognize at a distance. Now what takes longer, creating the art or coming up with titles? lol

There are only two human faces designed in this work. There are fish and birds and primitive sculptures all morphed into a butterfly wing.
This idea started many years ago. It is fun to do and has many applications in my animation projects. The. Butterflies are all first traditionally drawn and then digitally colored.

Nice pieces ED! your right the Greeks came up with the word, but the art existed way, way before the word.
Drew, I must have been matrixing, I saw 11...lol

Thank You Mario! Quick question: what is your scale. your ants are unique and for the most part, whimsical. they look to be around 4".
By the way, great thread. humans are always looking for their images in nature and art. we are programmed to find faces in nature. How many images of religious characters have been found in unexpected places like food, rocks, stains and so forth and so on.

Drew, the size of my ants vary as I don't like using a tape measure when sculpting, I do it by eye only and they vary in size from 4" to 8" depending on the other objects that are part of the sculpture, like the most recent ones the "Vanuatu Land Diver" and "The Contortionist" , Finding patterns in things is also a process of the brain I think that's called matrixing.
