Going To Streets Help?

Have you tried just show your work in the streets (I don't mean selling but just exhibiting it, which is not illegal in most countries)?

Does it helps attract people interest and purchase your work eventually?

I did think about doing this but have not had the nerve yet .. I am taking an easel and paints to the river (where I get most of the narrowboats reference pics from) so that may bring up something

Great idea - just not in the height of summer - hot and humid Florida right now. I knew a man who photographed and painted that used to travel in an RV. he would stop at interesting pull outs where folks would stop to look at the scenery - he worked - often on a painting, - but also displayed his photographs - he did quite well in promoting his art - and I think perhaps sold as well.

@Abbie - at least take a 'portfolio' of your images - in a photo album or something - because I guarantee there will be folks coming to watch you paint. Have your cards ready.

A few decades ago, a New York photographer sold his photographs while he stood on street corners. He eventually was "discovered" and he then had a book published of his black and white work and made some money off of his new "fame."

I serious want to just stand in a street in town to display some of my works and I am thinking about how to do it.

What I have in mind at the moment is to bring my photo studio backdrop stand, because it is light, fast and easy to mount, and use it to hand about 5, 6 or 7 strong images. And on my hand a book with more work to show those who become interested. And in my pocket business card.

Robert, I have that book in my library, "New York/ New York", his name is George Forss and his black and white photos of New York are beautiful!

I have thought about it, but not sure how to find out what the laws are. In many states you have to get a vendor license, so I guess I need just to see if that applies here or not?

When I was starting out then would take advantage of the attention you get as a plein air painter and always had works in my jeep to sell.

My advice is to forget the law and see if asking everyone's permission works. Even if they order you to the back 40, be truly grateful and give it your best shot. Patronize the owner shop if can, and stay grateful for the opportunity (even if they had nothing to do with it). I've never seen this not lead to more opportunity.

Many countries have the old law that forbidden people to stand in the streets for no reason, because in theory the streets is for circulation and to avoid crimes. But the only few countries where police man will make people follow this law are in some dictatorial regimes like North Korea and a few towns in Germany where they take the smallest rules very serious.

Many countries forbidden people bagging in the streets, or if not begging they forbidden people stand in the streets to receive any kind o money, like street artists and musicians. But again, the very few countries I know where they actually make people follow this rule is in countries like North Korea, some cities in Portugal and in Switzerland.

A part from very few countries, most cities, specially middle and big size cities where there are many touristis, artists and cultural life, allow people to freely express themselves in the streets (as far it is not a protest which follow other rules). Even if you receive money from it, like musicians, as far you don't charge people selling your presentation or products, but you can receive money if they give it to you.

So, what I am talking here is not about trying to sell in the streets but only show it. Like a exhibition in a public space. And attracting people eyes and interest on your my work, or yours, delivering business card hoping it helps to be discovered by curators, collector, etc, to purchase one of the works later on.
