I thank that has to have been their best system yet.

Awww..... loved watching that!! ("Cranking the film," lol.) I miss Windows XP. There is no bucolic photo for Windows 8, only a bunch of silly apps. I really dislike 8, but I'm stuck with it.

I like 8...well, 8.1. Get the desktop AND the apps. I have a Surface Pro 2, and it's pretty nice.

Jeff, glad you hear you are happy with 8.1. I have no use for "apps" on my computer. I don't even like them on my phone. I like to know what I'm doing. I started with computers back when we were doing DOS commands. Actually, I don't think I've ever even clicked on an App, ever!! LOL

I'm still using XP Pro. Also, you can configure Win8 to emulate the look and functionality of XP, but with the benefit of a touchy feely screen.

I tried that Murray and found it troublesome . Have you had any luck with that? I got so mad trying to make it work I took may Window 8 laptop back and bought an Apple. I really like it. Much more so then Windows 8.

Patricia, ever use the old CPM? Remember the Osborne and the Kaypro? I had five of them. Still have two in a closet. lol

I started out with Commodore, then moved to Radio Shack Models I, III (both TRSDOS), and Color Computer (a real marvel in its day), before switching to a 286 machine. It's been Windows ever since.

I was just looking at purchasing another HP laptop. I see I can still order them with windows 7 professional vs. getting 8.1. Last night I was reading many articles that said 8.1 is fine now and it's recommended. I have 7 now and am happy with it. Unfortunately, I bought my computer with Vista just a few months too soon and had to buy windows 7.

I guess I started looking since I can get 1T for less than I spent on my current laptop. I've bought an external hard drive and 1T Seagate backup. However, I did not realize the backup would not do anything connected on a USB cable. So all my work I've moved isn't getting backed up. I thought also I can dedicate the new computer to my artwork and leave the old one for facebook, emails and searches. Those things that can get a virus like I've had to deal with before. I'm leaning towards getting 8.1. Hopefully they have fixed many of the problems of 8.

I remember the TRSDos days, my first job was a technician for Radio Shack computers. Fun stuff. Would actually hook up disk drives to an oscilloscope to measure signal to adjust the alignment of the drive heads.

I have some old software that won't run on 64 bit machines, so I've installed XP virtual machines on most of my computers, so I can run the "old stuff".

Floyd and Murray, I vaguely remember those names. 286, surely. Had a few of those. My first computer was named the Am-Qute. I could have bought a car for the price of that thing, haha. Is anyone watching "Halt and Catch Fire"? Oh, the memories!

I eagerly wait for it every Sunday, Patricia. Memories here, too.
