I Wish I Had A Camera...

Yesterday was super windy and kind of cold but my husband talked me into going for a swim in the ocean anyway. The beach was deserted and no wonder...it was incredibly choppy and particularly uninviting. We both waded in but I chickened out and let my husband go ahead. After drying off I changed my mind though and jumped in for an invigorating swim.

The waves were big enough that I lost sight of my husband swimming up ahead. We usually swim around a small rocky island before returning to shore. I figured I'd spot him if I climbed up on the rocks of the island, so that's what I did.

As soon as I straightened up after climbing onto the rocks, about 15 feet away, were a mother seal and her very young -- I mean very young -- baby. The mother saw me instantly and did what I can only describe as a startled double take. She quickly slid into the ocean. She was agitated but stayed close to her baby. I backed off although I would've loved nothing more than to take in the scene. The baby remained oblivious throughout.

I started swimming back to shore on my back, keeping my eye on the island. I was seriously starting to think that something must've happened to my husband when all of a sudden I heard his voice right next to me. He hadn't gone around the island at all but the waves were so big I couldn't see him.

Anyway, I sure wish I'd had a camera to be able to capture the mother and baby seal. I've never seen seals out of the water in the wild before.

Ever had an experience where you missed a great shot because you didn't have your camera along?

I had a whole day wishing I had one Saturday...I went snorkeling Saturday at one of the most beautiful reefs ever...John Pennecamp...Several of the people I went with had underwater cameras and took literally thousands of shots..My camera is not designed for underwater...I plan on getting one now so I will be prepared for the next trip...

I think I need an underwater camera too, Judy. John Pennecamp sounds amazing. The only time I've been snorkeling was in Costa Rica and it was mind-blowing. I live on the coast so I could find some interesting areas to snorkel right in my own backyard.

Hi Peggy.. This happens to me often. Some of the more memorable occasions include:

Standing 10 meters away from the end of a rainbow..absolutely mindblowing..I can confirm there is no pot of gold :-)

I saw a mega rainbow which consisted of 5 separate rainbows, one of which was upside down and cut through the main double, and 2 others at 90 degrees to the "normal" position framing the whole scene.

A huge Buzzard came gliding up a very small stream flanked by trees and landed on a fence post 3ft away from me. It hadn't seen me as I was camouflaged and standing very still.

A fresh water otter having a dawn dip in a river I was fishing. This was a beautiful sight. It was simply playing in the water!

Charged particles in the atmosphere completely covering the sky in an intricate colourful butterfly pattern..allowing me to actually see the earths magnetic field. This was unlike any northern lights pics I have seen.

6 UFO's flying in formation over the Lomond hills in Fife, Scotland.

This list could go on and on...:-) But I'll finish by saying my children have provided me with countless missed photo opportunity, the most memorable of these being the time my daughter was born. The first time I ever held her she smiled upon hearing my voice. Many will say this is impossible and that it was just wind or whatever..But I know.. :-)

Interesting list, Barry. Pictures of any of the sights you mentioned would've been amazing, I'm sure.

I have to say that in a certain way, I enjoyed having an experience where I wasn't immediately thinking of capturing it in a photograph, just for a change. I could just take it all in and really feel it without thinking about my camera settings, etc., which actually distances me from the scene in front of me. Do you know what I mean?

BTW, I frequently have dreams now where I see an amazing sight (usually animals), and I can't get my camera to focus. Hmmm...

My wife used to get on me for always having to have my camera on me. One time we were going ten miles down the road to drop something off with someone and then were planning to come right back. On the way home, we saw this massive black smoke in the sky and went to check it out. We were on the scene before fire and medic and I got some amazing shots of a house fire that luckily had no injuries. I happened to work for TV news back then and was able to put the time down on an OT sheet that included the processing.

I literally never leave home without my camera.

Always have at least a point and shoot with me. Although, phone cameras are pretty good now. But the photos are still rather small.

Reminds, me, we have lilies blooming along the parking lot at work. I think I'll go out with my point and shoot and see what I can get....

I snorkeled once in Mexico. I loved it, and I wished I had purchased one of the "throw away" underwater cameras at the hotel...oh well. I don't think they even sell those any more.

I know what you mean, Joseph...my husband occasionally bugs me to leave my camera at home. The one time I listened to him was when we were going for a swim at the very same beach as my OP. Of course that day an eagle flew very low right in front of me with an enormous branch in its beak. It would've made a cool shot. I have to admit though that you have to be pretty trusting to leave your camera on a beach and go for a swim. I don't take mine anymore.

I just got an iPhone and am relying on that a little more these days.

ETA: I agree, Mary, the phone camera photos are pretty small. What point and shoots do you guys use? I had an old Canon Powershot but it isn't working now.
