Rain Covers For Cameras- Camo Or Solid Color?

Dear friends,
I am trying to decide between a camouflage color design and a solid green color design. I don't really like camo, but if it will make a huge difference in being able to photograph birds and animals I am willing to buy camo. I just think the dark green or navy blue is prettier! Any suggestions out there? Thanks!

i would say go with camo. i think anything that has a chance at blending well, camo is it. but i would assume it depends on the type of foliage. most photoblinds are camo. depends on the environment, if your hiding in blueberries, then blue would be better.

Thanks! Hiding in blueberries would eliminate the necessity of bringing snack bars, eh?

its worth a shot. you could even get covers for cabbage and apple orchards. i would avoid bright colors mostly. camo is a bit ugly, but if your going to specialize then camo is the best.

Blueberries would reduce the need for snacks but increase the need for bear spray.

With birds what you really need to worry about more then the pattern your cmera is covered in is their disliking the flash of light reflexting from the lens.

I use disposable raincovers. Essentially, it is a plastic bag with a drawstring on the end to secure around the lens. Works and they are roughly $1/piece.

I realize that I am paying $1 for something that probably took $0.04 to make, but they do what I need them to.

Thanks for the information everybody. I wish birds were scared of the reflection of my front door- we lost a robin the other day..

Chris,

I use a product called 'Shutter Hat.' Works like a charm and I purchased it through Amazon.com. Additionally, hotel-provided plastic shower caps work well in a pinch.

Brilliant idea Mike. I think you should share that idea with lenscoats.com. Might as well have reversible blinds too!

Never thought of photography from the fashion stand point. Do you want to look good or take good photos? Reminds me of fly fishermen who spend all their money getting all the "right" looking gear from Orvis but can't cast.

I discovered that plastic grocery bags are both light and stretchy. Put a finger hole in the bag, stretch over the lens, Viola'
If extra security is needed I recommend rubber bands and/or duct tape. Haven't seen them in camo, sorry.

Maybe they should make one that doubles as an anti-theft device. All scratchy, scuffed and full of duct tape. Great for urban shoots.

I use a black plastic retail bag with elastic bands to hold it in place.. it`s a little awkward, but does the trick and it`s free... I find grocery bags to be too white.

It looks like I missed seeing some replies- not a good idea for me to do this on the tiny phone screen. I will check back tomorrow. On a real monitor. Good night to all

Deer hunters and other hunters wear bright orange/fluorescent colors (hats and vests) - hmmmmm - well - that's to keep them from being mistaken for game - but if it works for deer and other game?

I don't know that it really makes that much difference - blinds work - not because they camouflage/blend with the surroundings so much as because you are hidden and there is no movement seen. I'm not sure we humans aren't more aware of color and shape than the rest of the animal kingdom, rather than movement.

PS - I bought one to take on my trip to Niagara last year - wasn't worth it - way too much trouble and it now resides in it's box somewhere in the closet.
