Rocks, Gems And Minerals, Including Pretty Beach Rock Closeup, But Not Beach Scenery.

Add your rocks, gems, and minerals images. Include beach rock closeups, but no beach scenery where the beach is not the focus of the image.

Add any abstract images that you thought looked like a rock, gem or mineral and you gave them that title and why.
Don't let this be just an 'image dump', tell us something about the image.

No increase in size and up to 3 together across the page for ease of loading.

Enjoy!

Here are a few to start:
Gemstones by Barbara GriffinBeach Textures Square by Barbara GriffinThe Breakup Of Pangaea by Barbara Griffin

"Gemstones" is a painting with a filter added that made the image pop.
I collected the "Beach Textures" one day while beach-combing.
As my description of "The breakup of Pangaea" says, I thought the vein structure of this beach rock looked like what Earth might have looked like after the breakup of the landmass, Pangaea. I can see what might be South America forming on the left, as well as Europe and Africa on the right.

Heya, Barbara. Being a geography teacher in a "former life" I do like your Pangaea rock image. It can "see" just what you describe. :)

Thank you Bill, me too in a former life! Glad it wasn't just my imagination, someone else could see it too!

Yup, I saw it as soon as I read the title - before I read your description.

Soooo... I just read the full description in your gallery. Right on!

Hi Barbara...I've pondered this for a while..should I or shouldn't I... :-/ well here I am... :-) Most of my work is done in stone. It is usually reclaimed from demolitions but I occasionally pick up some great stuff from the beach. I've decided to post this piece on the basis that the beautiful rock which I used is still clearly distinguishable. It has some lovely layers in it and is mottled with sparkling mica throughout.
Sagara and Mani..
description- Reclaimed sandstone

The stone for this piece was reclaimed from an ancient wall which had been demolished by a drunk driver. It is quite a grainy stone and doesn't lend itself well to fine detail, but it has some beautiful layers of mica running throughout.

Over time, as the layers recede through degeneration, the child figure will become larger and the mother figure will diminish.

My late Grandfather was an avid "rock hound". I only have a few of them, and I do not know what they are, except that I love the colors and patterns.

Thanks Bill!
Mary, I love those granite images with the lichen growing on them. Nice colors and patterns.
Barry, your mentioning sandstone and mica remind me of my days studying the Earth Sciences, and particularly seeing and learning about the various rocks and minerals and trying to remember all of the names. Sagara and Mani is a very nice image and I could see it in a lovely garden setting.
Ann, those are beautiful specimens...love the colors and patterns also.

Thank you. This is one of my favorite topics. I'm going to go with three sea glass images. To me, sea glass are beach gems. Starting out as trashed glass, the weather, sand and salt turn them into rounded crystalized glass. Simply beautiful.

The first photograph was taken in southern Norway, very dear to me as that is where my family was from. I love all the various rocks that region has. The next was fun to shoot as I never used a macro lens before and I wanted to emphasis the contrast of the smoothness of the mineral & the threads in the soft cloth. The last reminded me so much of my childhood. I was always creating things with rocks or collecting them. I still do that and lately placed the yard here many from different states. I'm no expert but can recognize some of the basic kinds but mostly I just like ones for their shapes, colors or simply as mementos of a place. I tell my husband they are cheap souvenirs ..he's ok with that as long as they aren't heavy and he has to carry them..lol

Japenese people love rocks. If you give them a rock for present, it is worth as gold to them.

Beautiful work, everyone!
Nina, I also collect small, interesting rocks from places I visit...lol!
To-Tam, that is so interesting. I can see why they would love a rock as a present. Those are beautiful stones in your image.

I Found A Basket Of Mice by Barbara GriffinColorful Ladybug Collection by Barbara GriffinWhite Coat Seal Pup by Barbara Griffin

I love walking on the beach and collecting rocks that have the shape of animals. This basket of mice was an experiment! It worked; people loved them. Tired of painting red 'ladybugs', I decided to brighten up the landscape with colorful ladybug beetles. The white coat seal pup was a big rock I found that looked so much like a young seal I had to paint it.
