Question About Night Photography

At school yesterday they were talking about a black cloth to use over the lens at night, Here is the actual writing "black piece of cloth to cover the lens for multiple
exposure and time lapse images"
That is all that as said, can anyone elaborate on this, i am really curious.

You can use this technique to photograph fireworks, for example. Set your shutter to "Bulb" mode, and cover your lens between bursts. In the result, you have multiple bursts in one picture. But, I wouldn´t use a cloth, because you don´t want to touch your camera, to avoid blur. In film days, this technique was the only possibility to bring multiple exposures on one picture. Today, I would take multiple exposures, and blend them together in post.

Some of the best ideas are very low-tech. A black cloth would essentially act as a shutter that can be opened and closed at will during a single exposure.

“I wouldn´t use a cloth, because you don´t want to touch your camera, to avoid blur.” I agree. However a black card held in front of the lens will work.

I have actually used this technique to shield part of then lens when shooting multiple exposures.

“In film days, this technique was the only possibility to bring multiple exposures on one picture”.

Actually, there are many film cameras that were/are made with the ability to cock the shutter without advancing the film, for this very purpose.
