Redwood City, New Bot Or Super Fan?

Last time I asked this question was about a town in VA where a doctor was looking through ALL my work and redid his office with it after a couple months of browsing.

So, is anyone else getting the Redwood City hits?

Which image JC?

Need the IP(s) to figure it out...

yep i've gotten quite a few the past couple days. actually they are from China - not Redwood City. probably just another useless bot.

I opted out of all the other domains such as Fineartinternational and Finearteurope but it doesn't seem to make any difference. I still get unwanted visits from all those places. So I'm not really sure what the domain selection is supposed to accomplish. oh well.

I have had several hits from Redwood City, CA also. ( But... All of the image hits were related to alcoholic beverages / pubs / saloons, etc. )

Isn't that town close to Yosemite NP ??

( also had a bunch of new hits on a variety of images from a new place in Ibadan, Nigeria - anyone else ?? )

The text that is displayed is misleading (sometimes)... you have to look at the actual IP (its displayed if you mouse over the text, and a tooltip will show you the IP), and then analyse that to really find out

that is what i did.

Big fan of mine and I think they loaded up their shopping cart last night. I am hoping they will check out soon.

Betty Depee

Yes, a few. They were all birds.

Richard Rizzo

yes about 6 hits.

my entire portfolio just about. But Redwood City is actually just a bounce IP from China, so technically that bot comes from China.

65 Hits all in one gallery of mine....

EDIT More than that others are just looking over some of those so must be a Bot.

Some bots may be good - like for indexing keywords/phrases. But many are nefarious for wasting time and bandwidth and/or looking to scrape and copy sites and images. Methinks the FAA techs need to do a bit of firewall tending to identify and block repetitive bot visits. :)

Google Analytics likely provides a better indication of "real" visitors to our galleries and images.

They like my birds, too. And like Dave, I did a whois lookup and found out they are really from China.

Very true Bill - I've been saying that for a long time but I mostly hear "bots are needed", "bots are a good thing" yada yada yada

I'm getting hits from there as well...

Part of the deal with bots is that some companies pay for visits/visitors to improve their rankings. They may or may not be aware that most of their "visitors" are bots and not humans. Recently, I read that 61% of all internet traffic is from bots. I believe that about 90% of my FAA traffic is from bots, 5%-8% from FAA members and the rest from real visitors.

Yes, lots from Redwood City, since yesterday, and all but two birds. Don't remember noticing it before.

They are going after all of my birds. Would a bot be that selective?

Janice Drew

Yes, I have some from Redwood City and so many from Beverly Hills, CA.

Peggy Collins

Just checked and everything RC looked at was birds. They started visiting on the 7th.

Also getting loads from Beverly Hills, which has been going on for a lonnnng time.

Steven Ralser

Redwood City also went after most of my birds. Had 2 visits from different IP addresses.

Andrea Lazar

All the birds for me, too - most just after midnight, a few about 4 hours later.

Not to change the subject - and maybe I should ask this elsewhere - but looking at the detail of the views, I noticed that only about 23 are showing up for an image with over 360 views, another with 148 views shows me only the last 11, another with 77 shows me only 3.
Anyone else notice that this has changed? When did that happen and why?!

Kathleen Bishop

Andrea, I hadn't noticed but I'm wondering if the views changed at about the same time they stripped away all but 50 comments.

Kathleen Bishop

Has anyone done a search for their birds to see if they are being sold elsewhere (like China)?

Steven Ralser

It would help if I sold some.

Sorry JC, but someone here did ask....

David - your comment about bots " looking to scrape and copy sites and images " - I hadn't even considered that!
I repeatedly see in the forums that it is good that they are looking, we need that, etc. and I totally believed that!
Do you know that there are bots that are copying images for free use or for sale?

Kathleen - any idea how/where we can look to see if our images are being sold or used elsewhere - how to actually find them among the bazillions of images out there?

Sheesss....this is a bit unsettling!

Redwood City hit 6 of mine. Flowers

Kenneth Agnello

I never had one hit from Redwood City. But, then, I don't do birds. Beverly Hills is still my biggest fan...the Bot with no face or name.

Joshua House

Bots, good and bad, are part of the internet. Unless we nuke the whole thing from orbit and start over completely they aren't going away.

The fact remains, if you want to sell online, bots, and actual people threats are part of the ecosystem, the only way to avoid that is to go back to selling off a card table on a street corner and at fairs. Don't see a huge line up for that.

Bradford Martin

Its a bird bot.

Dan Richards

I have not had that one, the new one I got is from, Merritt Island, FL. Never had any from there before, but they went through a bunch of my work.

To-tam Gerwe

Yes all my birds get hit from RC too.

Kathleen Bishop

Well, even if they are stealing our images to sell elsewhere, they are getting the low-res versions. I'm assuming they can't tunnel in to grab the originals.

Jean Noren

They have hit hundreds of mine. Starting with the birds. I was just about to ask if it was a bot.. and hoping it wasn't.

Kenneth Agnello

I never knew there were so many obsessions with bird images to warrant its own bot...don't get it.
