Call Me A Nonconformist If You Wish, But...

Hiya guys,

You can call me a nonconformist if you wish but I have had it with all the gas, food and utility prices going up around me like a yo-yo. After my one man show in September, I am raising my prices around 10%. I have noticed that a lot of artists here at FAA are lowering their prices and offering coupons with a 5 or 10% reduction in their prices. NOT ME!! I will not devalue any of my art.

Just because we are artists doesn't mean that we don't have bills to pay and families to raise. You should always remember that when you diminish the prices of your art, you are hurting anybody who has already purchased one of your paintings or prints. So I suggest that any buyers out there who have the least bit of interest in my art to buy it now because as of the beginning of the week of September, 9th, all my art is going up.

If any of you agree or disagree, please tell me why.

I wholeheartedly agree, Hal. I'm about to do a quantum increase on all my image prices, for much the same reasons that you mention.

I agree with you, and Good Luck. I have most of my prints at a decent earnings for me, but i am also selling some at a profit of $1.00 for me. Doesn't seem to matter...zero sales,

Thanks Murray and Robert. All I know is that as I am putting this one man show together, I am noticing how much work. talent and sacrifices that I mustered just to put my visions on canvas and boards. Why should I depreciate their value because of some businesses have raised the cost of living in this country. Plus, I will be robbing my children of their value when I finally clean my brushes for the last time and sign out?

Kudos! I totally agree with you and also want to add that your work is invaluable to the world, you are one of the best so go for it!

You are right Howard and Murray! I started selling more on Fine Art America when I went "up" on my prices instead of down. A lot of potential buyers think something is "wrong" with an artwork when it is priced too low. I think it goes back to that old saying "If something is too good to be true then it usually isn't...

I won't change my prices here (haven't sold a thing in 3 months anyway), but prices will be going up this fall on stuff I set out at festivals. I also will be changing my strategy at the one I do in Bordentown, offering more "kitschy" items pertaining to the town like mugs, keychains, etc. Not too many people want big posters, but they can always use or gift a mug or a keychain. Is that "cheapening" myself? Yea, but gotta give'em what they want so I can have what I want.

Thank you Phyllis.

You are so right Karen.

Louise I totally agree with you. My buddy Bruce Dumas once told me that he lowered some of his prices by painting smaller paintings. I guess that would work except in the case of a Vermeer. :)

I tell my permission based buyers who have subscribed to my email list that I wont raise prices just to offer a discount code. That my artwork is already valuable. That art is not a luxury, and my mission is to put a 'smile' on the walls of humanity. ..... It works just fine.

EDIT: There are a number of our fellow artists here on FAA who are regular sellers and who also have lower pricing. ..... I don't think it has anything to do with being a nonconformist as you suggest in your OP, but rather knowing your niche and your audience. If there is anything consistent with all of us here is that we all do our own thing and what works best for us.

Good for you. More artists should see value in there work. If artists considered themselves valuable and priced their work accordingly; then it would, in turn, transfer to the buyers and collectors. The problem is that many artists stay on a hobby level of creating and grow very slowly or never grow.
Eventually, I will raise my prices again too. I'm still early on in my art courier and building a clientele. I'm still in the "up and comer" bracket. Established artists like you, Hal, should have higher priced prints and originals. Every artist should progressively go up in pricing over time as their clientele grows and as they become more well known especially when the cost of living is going up.

I raised my prices last year - haven't sold one since - but - I'm not lowering them.

People either want what you are selling or they don't. A low price won't change their mind.

Lutz Baar

I agree Hal. FAA seems to be the only site where buyers accept that the artist get their fair cut.

Frank the nonconformity was directed at artists in general who feel that lowering their prices would generate more sales. I have nothing against them or how they think that lowering their prices will get them more sales. It's just not for me.

Thank you Abbie.

I appreciate that Jani.

Although I'm a year late, I'm with you Roy.

You're absolutely right Edward.

Hiya Lutz, how the heck have you been? Real happy to see you again. Thank you for jumping in here.

I have some idea, what the value of an original is...

But I do have a problem determining the value of a reproducible work, especially when I have no part in reproducing it

Edit;

All us Old Farts all in a row.

Glad to see somebody is busy here at FAA Lutz.
Old Farts all in a row? Isn't that the name of a song Roger? You definitely took a part in creating the art that was printed, didn't you Roger? That's like saying that movie starts shouldn't collect royalties on the movies they appeared in because they didn't create the film that the movie is embedded on. :)

Hal,

Generally when you have Old Farts in a row.

The "Row" rhymes with "Now"

I don't think it matters what price you have here if your new, since you have to bring the customer here to buy.. It seems it would be more important once you get people looking at your work.

Mario Carta

Everyone is entitled to price there work at whatever price they want but I also agree with Rogers statement (not the part about old farts as I can't relate to that)

"I have some idea, what the value of an original is...

Roger,

Here's my latest "Old Farts" joke.

Large Bowl Of Peanuts

A preacher visits an elderly woman for his congregation. As he sits on the couch he notices a large bowl of peanuts on the coffee table. "Mind if I have a few" he asks.

"Not at all" the woman replied. They chat for an hour and as the preacher stands to leave, he realizes that instead of eating just a few peanuts, he emptied most of the bowl.

"I'm totally sorry for eating all your peanuts, I really meant to eat few."

"Oh that's all right" the woman says. "Ever since I lost my teeth, all I can do is suck the chocolate off them." :)

As it stands I would have had to clean it up a bit anyway for this forum

I'm in the process of upping my prices around 10% too. Thanks for the jokes, Hal.

I too mentally struggle figuring out what my art is that I didn't create.

My prices on my sculptures have gone up also this year by 300%, yes 300%. I don't care if they sell either, but I have a feeling they will to the right buyer, but they are not reproductions.

Harold Shull

Hey Roger, you don't have to clean up anything for me. I have seen it all.

Thank you Mary Ellen.

Thanks Mario. I have been checking out my price list and noticed that I have raised some of my prices over 10% as well.

BTW, all you guys who live close by and don't make it to my show will get a wart on the end of your noses. :)
