The End Is Nigh!

Civilization as we know it will inevitably come tumbling down around us very soon! After the initial carnage of the apocalypse, a few survivors will be facing a very different challenge to stay alive. When we are reduced to scavenging for food and we are all having to burn our cameras and laptops just to stay warm, art will become irrelevant..moot(or will it?). But when we are in our little bunkers and caves, trying our best to feed our malformed, misshapen, nuclear fallout ravaged children with the cockroach and hair soup which we have lovingly prepared, we are going to need something to stir that soup with.

I like to carve love spoons. They are undoubtedly works of art, and yet they also have a function. I also carve stone sculptures which make great doorstops. Does anyone else have any practical use for their art? Edit: By practical....I mean physical :-)

"Does anyone else have any practical use for their art?"

Wall decor.

Barry Lamont

Hmmm.. I'm not convinced decoration counts as being practical. I'll have to ponder on that one and consult with the experts :-) It's up for debate!

Jeffrey,

Please let us post images

The human race will never not need art of some kind. From drawing on walls to hanging garlands to collecting colorful rocks for the fire pit and beautiful grasses for a mat. But I would love such a lovely spoon to stir my soup with Barry :-) Beautiful work!

Barry Lamont

My Dad says.... :-) Only if your using your wall hanging to cover up a hole and keep the wind out!

edit: Thanks Pamela :-)

Roger, et al,

Please discuss only, no images.

You can post links to your work, though.

Thank you.

To add: "My Dad says.... :-) ..."

Dad is right. Decorating, entertaining, conversation, visualisation, etc. Very practical indeed. One picture is worth millions of words, debates, money, -- the list goes on.

Post a link Roger!

I thought the image business was resolved and they could be posted if they related to the subject. Not correct?

Barry,

You asked.."Does anyone else have any practical use for their art? "

I do

But I can't show you.

Edit:

Posting links ain't no fun

I have some show and tell also but telling it is only half of it and I am more visual.

That's a fantastic hair clip Roger/Melissa... superb!

So, let me get this straight. You can post the url from the address bar, but you can't post link in the conveniently labeled "link" box?

Was there some notice on this I missed?

Roger Swezey

Melissa,

Thanks for taking the trouble, I really appreciate it.

You know, one good thing about this product is that it comes in handy when someone is trying to pull the wool over your eyes

I would think the the metal prints would have a number of post apocalyptic uses...

Barry,

With regards to..."cockroach and hair soup which we have lovingly prepared, we are going to need something to stir that soup with.

I lovingly prepared the cockroach and hair, now it's your turn to stir.

Cool roach. Reminds me of when my wife had those giant Madagascar hissing cock roaches about 2" long. She would hold them and they crawled around with all those legs.
They say if everything else is gone cock roaches will survive.

Barry Lamont

Roger..Isn't synchronicity wonderful! Those roaches are ace... The narcissists are my favourite :-)

That is a wonderful carving, Barry. I like it a lot. Very well done, sir. Certainly a beautiful piece.

That said, I think that Doomsday Preppers are a bit more frugal in their efforts to stock their bunkers than to pay 200 bucks for a spoon that will serve a dual purpose.

Will they have time to go retrieve the spoon from the wall when the calamity/disaster/Apocalypse arrives?

There was a great novel I read years ago titled, Lucifer's Hammer. My favorite character was the guy that buried hundreds of instructional books in his septic tank. His books were on many subjects from how to build everything from a windmill, to a human powered electrical generator. His assumption was that this knowledge was nearly as valuable a bullets would be!

If I were a Doomsday Prepper I promise you that I would have long ago stocked my bunker with plenty of utensils---perhaps even a wooden spoon to stir the re-hydrated
beans with---at a cost much less than I would pay for a work of art. (And I certainly would not have to worry about retrieving a work of art from my home)

Stay safe then

Care to clarify? Yes/No/Maybe?

I couldn't pen such a stunning Moon/ Storm story, I haven't the skill or words, but, I could share a fine image /response, because i am also moved to

express myself about Storms, visually. Weather/whether that would be on topic, who knows? Guess I have to wait for a Storm themed thread, lol.

Oh, but wait....I also am required to accompany my Art with prose,lol....in that Storm thread, the visual isn't enough. ...oh well....one less theme for me.

See ya all at Activity Stream.......that way I 'stay safe'.....

Back on topic.....

I consider all well executed industrial and architectural designs art. Even some automotive pieces. I don't do that kind of thing, but I appreciate it a lot.

Although my photographs are not very practical (maybe rolled up to swat those roaches?), I do have 4 legged and rough skinned subjects I shot in the Everglades I can think some practical uses for. :)

Drew

Yes Rudy, industrial art is live and well. even the simplest cultures of the past used great skills in pottery production, garment fastening, etc.
. I am sure most of us have the ability to whittle a little in case of civilization collapse.

MM Anderson

When civilization collapses and most of the populace in the future are illiterate then art will become necessary for communication again. Also, form follows function so an item has to first be functional but that doesn't mean humans don't crave beauty as well so tools need not be plain.

HW Kateley

Perhaps that is why in some cultures, both old and modern, the subjects of art are tightly controlled.

Bradford Martin

After the apocalypse, or even if there is none, my art will serve as a visual record of what the world was like. There will be photos of extinct species like wood storks, manatees and right whales. There will also be pictures of big ships and oil rigs. They will be able to look at the world as it was and avoid the mistakes of the past. I suppose that is of practical use. Another use of framed art is you can hide things behind the art, like old war bonds and stocks, secret treasure maps, messages, and even cash.

Robert Frank Gabriel

A former pal of mine owns 3 art galleries in Nevada. He has a very practical use for the art he sells....earns him millions.

Drew

@ Robert: Art is also considered one of the best investments in poor economic times. most oil paintings are very portable and are easily hidden from thievery and hostile governments.

paintings and drawings can be stacked and stored without detection. their value can reach many times their weight in gold and the talented artist caries his or hers ability were ever they go

Ed Meredith

Barry, after the apocalypse your beautiful spoon will be useful at a candle lit dinner i’ll be hosting using appropriately symbolic bowls… .

Form follows function... . =>))

MM,

You wrote..."When civilization collapses and most of the populace in the future are illiterate then art will become necessary for communication again."

I would like to respond:

When civilization comes to it's senses and realize that the written word is not the only means of communication, the World, the Universe, will be opened to EVERYONE

Abbie Shores

WHY is art such a good investment? WHY do people buy art in case of disaster (financial) I mean, they may not get any money back if someone else doesn't like the work..... Are they making the demand by buying the work in the first place?

Sorry, nothing to do with spoons but I have always wondered

Drew

@ Abbie: you got to buy the good stuff....and no, I am not here to debate what the good stuff is.

Abbie Shores

HAHAHHA .. no indeed. I just wondered if the buying of it makes it the good stuff

"The End Is Nigh!" It's even closer if you hold your breath for a while. I've been listening to doom and gloom sayers for the last 40 or so years. Life as 'we know it' has never been a stable thing. Think of the 'dinosaurs' - they should have been roaches.

Roy Erickson

Abbie - actually you need to buy what no one else wants now - think if one of your ancestors had the foresight buy all the van Gogh's in his day - and you had them today.

In which case - my digital abstracts are about the best buy on FAA

Drew

""The End Is Nigh!" It's even closer if you hold your breath for a while." LMAO again and again! he he he he......

Mario Carta

Barry if the end is near all the more reason to live every day like it's the last day, let's be happy! As for practical use for my art, it's actually a solid financial investment, copper is a limited natural resource in high demand, can only go up in value from $3.95 per lbs scrap rate, you can even buy copper bars, copper is the metal most like Gold at a molecular level, so what ever does not sell I can always melt down for scrap rate, very practical ,lol.

Barry Lamont

Ed.. Superb work! thanks for posting (my fav is the monk)

Rudy..."rolled up to swat them roaches"..LOL "I consider all well executed industrial and architectural designs art." I agree.. are there any architects or industrial designers here willing to share their work?

Abbie..Thank you very much! I take added pleasure in creating these knowing I'm keeping an ancient tradition alive.

H.D..great song :-) one of my favourites.

Walter.. I have used the spoon shown many times.. I had to put a price on it for search reasons. In the highly highly highly likely event of an apocalypse happening tomorrow :-) I will swap one of my spoons for a handful of roaches.

Barry Lamont

Great point Mario.. being the son of a heating installer, I'm very aware of the value of scrap copper. And I can only imagine it's value going up in the event of an apocalypse....from $3.95 to 1000 cockroaches per l/b :-)

@Roger did those rodents come from Mikes shed?

Mario Carta

Barry here are a few sculptures that if they survive the day of doom might have a secondary practical use all except the 1st one. The 3rd one might require a little modification to make if fully functional put has the potential for being the most desired item that everyone could use.

Thank you Barry, much appreciated. Feel free to steal, to me it's the highest form of flattery.

Walter Holland

Sorry for the confusion, Abbie.

If you will look back I never implied that I was a moderator. On my own thread I did advise Barry to remain on topic. Or something of the sort. (I believe the term you used was the TS was to “Look After” the thread.)

I posted this quote from you, Abbie: “Stories and full discussions with images are totally allowed.”

I am left to wonder which way it is.

One other thing, Abbie. You wrote: “You have spent half the time moaning about no images instead of discussing the topic...”

I must say that I have no idea who the “you” that you refer to is.

Not to mention that I see your use of the word, “moaning” a bit disquieting.

Once more, while---as I have stated above---I believe Barry's spoon is a wonderful piece! And well worth the price as a work of art.

It is, however, with the practical use that Barry states---regarding what he brought up in the OP as the soon to come disaster/apocalypse---that I disagree with. I believe the spoon is not at all practical in the situation Barry offered.

I have some four wooden spoons in a kitchen drawer. I don't believe any of them cost over two dollars. If push came to shove and the apocalypse DID happen tomorrow I assure you that with the folding knife I keep in my pocket I could whip out a couple of serviceable eating utensils in a couple of minutes.

And who knows? In a couple, or few, thousands years when the archeologists find my fossilized bones hanging on to my quickly made eating utensil---the folding knife laying under my right hip---these things may perhaps be found on the wall of a museum? (Not necessarily an art museum, but then: who knows what the future will bring. Meanwhile I refuse to live in fear. I have greater faith in mankind.

Barry Lamont

Abbie :-) I only asked Walter to "kindly refrain from posting videos"..unfortunately..I hadn't considered his phenomenal "ability" to miss the point and he chose to post one anyway. I didn't see this as moderating..just a polite request.
Walter..YOU are a real work of art and I can imagine your bones being in a special museum somewhere in the future, next to the Cardiff giant and other hoax mythical creatures. You of course would be labelled TROLL. :-) An extract from one of my favourite fables...

"Who's that tramping over my bridge?" roared the troll.
"It's I! The big Billy Goat Gruff ," said the billy goat, who had an ugly hoarse voice of his own.
"Now I 'm coming to gobble you up," roared the troll.
Well, come along! I've got two spears,
And I'll poke your eyeballs out at your ears;
I've got besides two curling-stones,
And I'll crush you to bits, body and bones.
That was what the big billy goat said. And then he flew at the troll, and poked his eyes out with his horns, and crushed him to bits, body and bones, and tossed him out into the cascade, and after that he went up to the hillside. There the billy goats got so fat they were scarcely able to walk home again.
THE END! :-)
