Editing Photography Under Digital Art?

Hi,
Something happened to me today. I was uploading one of my images and I saw when you can put the image under categories, there was digital art.

Now, I did select digital art, even though my photograph was actually taken, not made on a computer. I selected digital art, as photography is one thing and editing is another. Does anyone have any opinions, whether edited photographs should be put under digital art as well? I think it should, as editing is a hard thing to learn, and helps you bring out the true photograph.

Sorry for this random topic, I was just wondering if anyone has any opinions.

Have a great day,
Josh Brnjac

I would start with q forum search. Its a frequent question and most regulars thoughts don't change much.

Judging from the five shots on your page, they probably should be listed as Photographs. I do enough searches on images here to see other people mislabel their art evidently to get more exposure and the only thing it does for me is get on my nerves.

Thank you, I am not trying to get more exposure :) I was just seeing everyones different opinion :)

Editing IS a part of photography. It always has been...even with film.

Hi Josh, I think it depends on how my final product looks.

If it still looks like a photograph in the end, I call it a photograph. If in the end it looks like a painting, I list it as digital art as well.

I've been told by Abbie that even though the upload system allows us to choose TWO mediums....FAA will only show the image in ONE of mediums you picked, not in both and she does not know why.

"We only show one... it is either digital art OR a photograph"

Really? I didn't know that. Hm.

This is one of the things that gets my dander up - just because it's done with a digital camera - it's digital art - using that thinking - everything on here is digital art - and it's no wonder that digital artwork, composed/created on a computer gets lost. It just like spam tags/keywords

Digital art is not a photograph, it is digital art. I have to agree personally with Roy. Digital ART and digital PHOTOGRAPHY are not the same thing nowadays.

We will show one category but not the other

Why are we allowed to select more than one? If it only shows or counts one why not only have the option to select only one? I have one group of art I am going in and removing one set of tags I do not want to have in there and I had selected more than one box and now I am removing one of the options while I am at it. I wish we could only mark one then it would match what the system does with our selections so we select the main one start start with.

The two choices are about the originals: Painting. Acrylic on canvas.

When it comes to photography, it is photography.

Digital art never sees a camera. It is created in the computer.

Just wanted to alert those who select more than one category when uploading your art. When I first started here and uploaded a digital painting I made from a photograph, I selected both photograph and painting (which was a pretty dumb move, lol). When someone favored and commented on my work, the category showed up as "painting." I was so embarrassed, because it looked like I was passing my photograph off as a painting! So, if you see a photographic work that is categorized as a painting, don't assume the member is intentionally misrepresenting their work; they may just not know.

I would say, if the original photo layer remains :, It's "Photography, digitally enhanced/altered"

If one can delete the original photo layer and still have an image: It's" Digital Art"

The same thing as if one traced with pen and ink over a photograph:...It's a "Pen and Ink drawing".

It's a never ending battle but I think if you're going to call something art, then a large portion of what is shown should be strokes done by hand and not just manipulation or editing of a photograph. A photo that is modified, IMO, should be called artistic photo manipulation.

I've started calling my stuff traditional digital art, which is a term I saw someone else using on FAA, and is a more fitting title for pieces that are created in the computer using the mouse or tablet as a simulated paintbrush.

This is what I would call an example of traditional digital art.. everything is hand drawn with the mouse, no photos are present although obviously I had to use photographic references to create the armor, but no photos are present.. The background scenery is built from scratch using my imagination.

Photography Prints

and here is an example of digital art in the non traditional sense, whereas most everything is still hand drawn, but a photo was used for the background scenery.

Bottom line is we need more variety in the digital category to accommodate the different types of work people are creating in the computers.

John, wouldn't that be "traditional digital painting" rather than "traditional digital art"? You painted everything by hand, albeit on a computer. So, the computer was your canvas. Boy, this gets confusing, but the use of the word "traditional" seems to be key here. Excellent points you make.

"Digital art never sees a camera. It is created in the computer."
"if you're going to call something art, then a large portion of what is shown should be strokes done by hand"

LOL Gotta love seeing the different opinions on "what is art". Ask 100 people, get 100 varying opinions. In the end, that's what it always boils down to with conversations like these, is opinions.

Ya, you got it right Kevin.

The thing is no one is really selling art here with a few exceptions, percentage wise, of those selling originals. We are selling art prints. Or reproductions. I'm not sure the average buyer really cares what it is called in its original form. Oh, they may pretend they do so they don't sound too dumb, or just out of curiosity, but bottom line if they like what they see enough, they buy it. If they don't like it, they don't buy it.

At leas that is my opinion! Dang there that word is again: opinion! lol

Melissa Bittinger

But Floyd, they still have to find it here somewhere...that's where the questions of what medium to categorize work in come from. The digital art category is way too vague. I would also like to see some sub categories offered, like I've seen on other art sites.

Melissa, I agree with that. But it is more important to those that have faith in and rely on the FAA search. I have no faith in it at all and I am not relying on it.

As Abbie keeps telling us most people find us via Google.

I only promote with links directly to specific images on my AW. I feel that takes all that FAA search guess work out of the equation. I am not anywhere near one of the top sellers here but I do sell on a regular bases. I have a very low probability of showing up in the FAA search, as I understand it so I don't pay much attention to it. As I get closed to one of those $10K a moth sellers, I will take a look at the FAA search in an all new light.

I figure that will be some time in 2064, or 100,000 images uploaded! lol

Not to say I am against more categories. If that helps anyone, I am all for it.

To answer the OP use whatever you want to call it. The customer is going to buy an inkjet print of an image he/she liked. Many people have an opinion on what YOU should do. Don't give away that responsibility. Your opinion is the only valid opinion for you. Be an artist or a dilettante, one or the other.

Hello everyone,
Thank you for all your replies. I think some Roy and others underestimate the computer enhancing photographers do to their work. Photography is not just taking a photo and uploading it, it is much more complicated. It may not be digital art, but it is still worked very hard on with a computer. Just standing up for all photographers here.

And yes, A LOT of opinions!

Walter Holland

Excellent example, Philip.

It is my opinion that FAA should offer a wider range of cosignatories regarding photography.

Yes, Why would such a little thing make you angry? I think it is a bit over the top getting angry with this small thing.
