We Were All Newbies Once

As a tangent to Wings thread, I thought it might be interesting for all to know what we talked about the first time, as Newbies, we contributed our bon-mots to this forum

I have to admit that I didn't even know how to use AS, couldn't figure out how to say 'thanks' on nice comments...........went on far too long, very embarrassing....lol...easy to laugh now, haha.

I remember so well, the welcome I received and the great interest the regulars had with regards to my history as a young adult, hanging out at the same bar (Cedar Bar, NYC) at the same time with the Greats in Abstract Expressionism.

And how frustrating it became, trying to get the story out, before being logged off.

And my first thread posting "Can Painting on Velvet be Fine Art?"

Great post Roger..As I am still fairly new, it's fresh in my memory.. I immediately got into an argument about perceptions and symbolism..(in politics and religion..a BIG no no!) I soon learned my mistakes..nearly got banned before I got started..made loads of enemies..upset the mods and old-timers..and have since spent the rest of my time here making up for it... :- Great stuff... A steep but fulfilling learning curve!

I am new to social media.FAA Forum is my first. Not new to computers at all. I just never wanted to do social media even Facebook.
I’m sure Roger remembers when I plunged into his “should I feel guilty about buying a Walmart teddy bear thread”. It was at Christmas.
I did not realize politics was not allowed. That is a great Forum rule. I thought most people would agree with my views. But I realized they did not when a wrath came down on me. I am not the confrontational type anyway so I was glad when the thread died out. I will never forget phyllis Wolf agreeing and kind of coming to my rescue. She seemed to have disappeared from this forum though. I am more low key and for the most part will leave the debating to other people. For the most part.

I'm still pretty new. Feel free to give me any tips or pointers...

Lol. When I first came here... I didn't know that / then how - people were finding my image to put comments on it.

Understanding " Behind the scenes " came later.

Several people here were very supportive of my efforts - I have tried to pass that on.

Jim,

I remember that thread very well, and I'm truly sorry that your first venture onto this forum was met with so much vehemence.

By the way, the child still sleeps with that bear each night, and waddles over every day to my place, to learn to be the next Vulture Sculptor

Great topic, Roger. I just want to say to Ally, I was perhaps a bit harsh on my other topic, Roger and what you get out of this thread will surely get you on the right direction. Carry on... :-) W

Yes Roger you did a fine job on that long thread and I remember it finally ending with you posting an image of that large bear sitting on your knee in soft light right before Christmas with your Santa stocking cap on. A really great image.

Way back when (the forum was not moderated) my first post ended in a big verbal fight, but I don't exactly remember what the fight was about.

I remember my first posting "Hi I'm new". I got a lot of nice people welcoming me to FAA. Back then there were only 11,000 members. That was over 5 years ago. Back then FAA was simpler. It didn't have groups, contests, artistwebsites, blogs, email campaigns or social network sharing buttons. I've grown up on FAA and I'm looking forward to getting old with it :-)

Darice,

The font must have been slightly different then, for the longest period of time I thought your name was "DANCE"

And

Christine,

I've always thought of you as GOD.....And I still do

Roger......re The Rules........I remember when people would post a reply, then go back and delete it or change it out of recognition, and the whole thread would be senseless...................until Abbie enforced the Rule that a post can't be changed/edited after 24hrs of it being posted here...........what a ruckus that caused, lol...........

that's why newbies will see 'edit' on a post to which a change is made.......though I don't see that 'rule' in The Rules, hmmmm..........

And I'll always love you Rover, and what ever you need ...,. I'm here. Just give me a shout.

Even though my profile says I have been here awhile, I am a perfect example of what the free subscription person does, nothing. However, since my arrival into the paid arena, I have managed to open my big mouth and let the words flow, good or bad, and often redneckish, I hope I did not end up on the wrong side of too many of the old timers here, because I am one that still could use a hand up.

Edit, Lol.
I do appreciate those that reached out to me in one of my first postings, because I was truly in dire straights and still struggle with finding my place here with ya'll.

I have had FAA for just over a month. I had been waiting for my parents to give me permission to make an account but when I got it, I found the layout of the website rather confusing. :/ So my good friend, Parker Cunningham (who has had his account for a while), helped me understand and learn the layout, what does what, what not to do/what to do and why, etc. Now I know it like the back of my hand! :)

I was here for a year before I posted, by then I knew the ends and outs. In the beginning I spent most of my time researching the "how to" threads. You all were kind of intimidating! Only recently have I posted much.

I made the mistake of asking about sales when I mad my first post. The How long until your first sale. Got slammed by the rude folks just waiting to pounce. If they did not want to answer the question they should have just move on.

That is why when that question is asked daily now, I get miffed at those that feel the need to open their yap every time a Newbie posts that question or one similar.....and tells them ''We see that every day'' or the other one that is also a put off.... ''Use the search''...For goodness sake in stead of being rude and making them feel bad.... just move on and let someone who wants to answer do so.

I opened my big mouth early on without a proper introduction and now realize that was rude. Even so, no one gave me grief for being clueless.

I still read some of the threads because there is a lot of useful information offered but lately the tone has changed drastically, IMO, so the forum is no longer humorous and entertaining. I'm afraid some of the most interesting members will quit posting entirely and that's a shame. Can't quite put my finger on why/when it became so rigid...

Kathleen,

You wrote:.." I'm afraid some of the most interesting members will quit posting entirely and that's a shame."

You'll be here a year come next Wednesday.

I know some of the most interesting members have/had quit entirely long before the pleasure of meeting you.

And

I'm always AFRAID that some others might RETURN, one of these days.

I may have been one of the first if not the first to introduce the "post you xyz" image threads on FAA, that's been a source of controversy in recent months, but now has been reinstated in a more structured form. And I think that's a good thing. As visual artists, those months without image threads were like being stricken with sudden blindness without the aid of ADA support. -W
